Edited by: Versipellis on 28/04/2009 12:52:44 i have a question mark long hovering in my mind..
i know that different races have different tanking styles.. Like caldary shield-tanks and minmatar armor tanks..
but imagine me being a caldary pilot and flying a mammoth.. so does this mean it'd be better to armor tank with my mammoth or because i am caldary is it better to shield tank?
basicly i am asking if the tanking style comes with the ship's or the pilot's race?
cause i can't remember if caldari starts with higher shield skill or minmatar with higher armor skills..
according to this information i probably have to train armor with my caldary pilot if it's something to do with the pilot's race..
though i have a strong feeling that it's about the ship.. like minmatar ships generally armor tank doesn't matter what the pilot's race is.. is this right?

Yes, you want to consider the ship more than the pilot's race. You may start out with more SP in certain tanking skills, but that doesn't mean that you have the ability to make any ship an effective shield tank, for instance.
As for the mammoth, I have no idea what the best tank would be. Isn't that an industrial ship? Do you just want a tank for protection from pirates or something?

Your race doesn't matter. Only thing that matters is the ship and your skills. Also is it for PvE or PvP matter too. People prefer to armor tank in PvP because web/warpd uses mid slots, while in PvE people prefer to shield tank because +dmg% modules use lows. In most of the cases, not always though.
And what makes you say Minmatars are armor tankers? I would say Minmatar is jack-of-all-trades as their ships aren't dedicated to single tanking type.
Gallente/Amarr, armor mainly Caldari, shield mainly. Minmatar, little bit of both.
For example my failfits for L1 and L2 missions are shield buffer tanked rifter and rupture, and NEVER have had to jump out from any mission because i was close to go pop.
Anyway, in general the ships bonuses give a hint on which way it _should_ be tanked. a Myrmidon got a bonus to armor repairer ammount. But then again passive (shield) myrmidon isn't unheard of either, so the bonuses doesn't mean that you have to tank it that way.
The ammount of low/mid slots determine most of the time which way people tank it - few meds and lots of lows = armor tank.

Pilot's race is irrelevant, only ship flown and skill levels trained matter. Actually, other than the picture of the character, starter NPC school and NPC corp you go to when you're not in a player corp, the pilot's race and bloodline is COMPLETELY irrelevant for gameplay purposes.
Industrial ships, you don't tank them, you plate/extend them instead, if you really have to.
Amarr and Gallente usually armor tank. Some Gallente ships can be shield-tanked too. Caldari ships almost exclusively shield-tank, but some crazy armor-tanked fits could work too. Minmatar ships are a mix of either armor or shield, depending on what ship you pick, some minnie ships can pull both off depending on what exactly you want to do with them.
Generally, ships with more midslots are better for shield-tank, ships with more lowslots are better for armor tanks. If the ship has a bonus for any specific tank type, it's usually best to go with that one, but exceptions exist there too, mostly depending on circumstances (like, say, Myrmidon, which is a Gallente battlecruiser with armor tanking bonuses, but which works quite well if passive shield tanked).

it depends. some ships are best shield-tanked. some ships are best armor-tanked. some can be either. and even then, it may depend on pilot's skills. minmatars, being a mixed bag, are prime example of this philosophy.
specifically, for industrials (and transport ships in general) "best tank" is not to get attacked, if you intend to use ship for it's role, which is to transport cargo. tho, if you want to bait people, then standard fitting guidelines apply (more medium slots = shield tank, more low slots = armor tank).

thanks so much all.. seems like i had very few knowledge when it comes to tanking and armor.. thanks for clearing my mind about "ship or the pilot" dilemma.. i can see it's all about : purpose (pvp, pve), low and medium slots, ship bonuses and maybe personal preferences that effects the tanking and armor style :)
mammoth was just a poor example my main purpose was to armor my rifter.. so low slot plate and arm. rep.
thanks alot for the enlightment.. cheers..

Depends what you're trying to do with it An armor plate will increase your max HP (so it protects you from alphastrikes a bit better and makes you last a bit longer in evenly-matched fights) but it adds mass to your ship, making it less agile (so aligns to warp slower, orbits slower) and making your top speed lower when using a propulsion mod (AB or MWD), so it's a trade-off, and in some cases actually a bad idea.

In PvE (my experience) the Rifter is a great example. Even today it speed tanks really well with AB, getting under NPC guns and taking less missile damage. It gets hit so lightly that shield tank and no resists works fine. I ground through some L2's with it, though the Rupture cruiser is really easier & faster to complete.

i'll do some newbie pirating with my minmatar alt.
great guide you wrote btw.. and great dog breed.. akita

While we're discussing Rifter load-outs, the Rifter can get a decent passive shield tank by slapping on an oversized (medium) shield extender, a few resistance mods, and an AB/MWD in the mids and Shield Power Relays in the lows. You don't need a lot of skills for it (though more is better, of course) and it works great for mission running (for pvp you'll probably prefer speed over tank, but if you're going for tank this will work too though the extra sig radius from the extender might hurt).
