Recently I took a fancy to ratting inside 0.0 in order to support my PvP addiction and I am looking for advice on what would be the best ship to use for such role.
Now the 0.0 area that I chose is very hostile. There are no stations or POSes I can use since they have sovereignty here. Entry is very difficult, due to nearly 23/7 camps on entry, but possible. The owners are very active and do have probing ships with them during their patrols. Therefore whatever ship I choose has to have a cloak or be fast to warp, so I can bounce around the system till they give up. Another restriction is that it has to be a Minmatar ship, as I do not wish to cross-train my ships or weapons. The rats are Angels.
Up to this point I had been using a Wolf or a Rupture for this task, unfortunately it takes so long to kill battleships, that it is probably more profitable to run level 4s in empire. So far I had great success getting in and out using a Prowler, so I can take ammo in and take salvage/loot out.
My questions are: 1. Is it possible to ninja rat under such conditions and earn more than level 4s in empire?
2. If it is possible, what ship would meet these conditions?
Perhaps Muninn? |

"I want to do some ratting in 0.0 but instead of choosing somewhere relatively quiet I've decided that what I really want to do is rat somewhere incredibly dangerous, with loads of active gatecamps, alert and organised patrols and with no npc stations. On top of this I've decided to rat Angels because I'm not enough of a masochist yet. Clearly my brain is malfunctioning."
In case you decide to actually choose an area where you might not either die horrible or be forced to sit in a safespot for 23 hours of the day, the Pilgrim is a good choice. As is the Ishtar (with a cloak). Neither are Matari ships but I don't care, the best choices are the best choices. I suppose a Muninn or Vaga could do it but are nowhere near as good.
Pilgrim and Ishtar are better because:
1. Cloaking device - covops in the case of the pilgrim. 2. No need for resupply - unless you do something stupid and get your drones popped, you should never need to bring ammo in (sentry drones on the Ishtar, lasers with t1 crystals and med drones on the Pilgrim). 3. Lots more dps than either a Wolf or a Rupture, so you'll be killing much faster.
If however, you decide to stick with your frankly insane choice of area, I recommend the Rifter since it's cheap as hell when it gets blown up. Putting the 'irate' into 'Pirate' |

Edited by: 007casino2 on 29/04/2009 04:04:08 Minimatar ships are generally fast, so your lucky there. But, i would highly recommend moving somewhere, what your doing now just isn't worth the isk you'll lose/gain. And not cross training ships, in my opinion is rather ignorant.

Honestly, I hope this is a troll thread. If not, then no, you won't be able to make more than L4s in this situation, as you're going to have to bug out of belts every 5 seconds. Taking a Muninn into this situation is stupid, since if the owners are as active as you say they are, they're eventually going to kill you, which means all that money it took you forever to make will be washed away. If you do decide to continue ratting in this area, rather than finding a safer area, do it in an insured rupture. Otherwise, go back to your L4s.
If constant warping out of belts is how you get your kicks, however, then continue with your current playstyle. You're paying $15 a month for this game, play it how you want to.

Pilgrim - enough DPS, dual rep tank with 3X cap rechargers and 1X afterburner, covops cloak I've used it to rat in -A- space before. Why don't you just try ratting in providence?

Well I didn't realise that the situation I chose to be in was so hopeless. I thought this is what all hostile 0.0 is like: Watch local, warp to safe as soon as anyone comes and accept the losses that will come. With rewards comes risk and all that...
Regardless, my first question is answered: Under these circumstances it is not profitable to carry on.
Big thanks to all that responded. |

I did something like this with an ishtar. Best to use sentries or stay close to your drone so you can scoop and run when needed.

I feel the Ishtar is the best for this purpose. I used to rat in Venal with mine and it worked great. Here is the setup I used.
1x Tractor Beam, 1x Salvager, 1x Proto Cloak, 1x Small Remote Armor and Structure Rep ( to rep drones ) 10mn MWD 4x Meta 4 Cap Rechargers ( meta 4 needed for CPU issues with the remote reps) 1x MAR2, 1xSAR2, 2x EAMN2, 1x DC2 1x EXP resist rig, 1xCCC ( the rigs were on it when I bought the ship but make it nice anyway )
This setup gives you nice resists and can tank any Serp/Gurista spawn and probibly the Sansha one as well. Angel might be a little tough but doable. Has nice resists all around incase you find yourself in a hostile bubble and fast enough to get back to the gate. Don't forget the flight of T2 Warriors for the pesky random Intercepter. The remote reps were for repping drones a long way from home. Good luck and I recommend cross-training Gallente if only for this ship.

I was always of the opinion that for this kind of ninja ratting in hostile space the best way to do it would be to just set aside a couple of months and stay in that region.
Due to being in said hostile space, logistics would be impossible so lasers make the best choice.
So maybe something like a beam-fit crusader or whatever the laser AF is.
Unlimited ammo, sig/speed tank the rats and can get out of belts fast of the preverbial hits the fan.
Not sure whether it would have enough dps though... __________________________________________

The laser AF is Retribution and it works so and so for ratting ... takes about 3 mins to kill a 800k rat :P
