Sick of it all! (Laid off again, 3rd time this year).

Maxivo Celtic Anarchy Force Of Evil	Posted - 2009.05.01 16:26:00 - [1] So this morning I got in to work a tad early and went through the usual routine of pulling on my overalls and rigger boots (half a sleep I must admit). I then headed over to the office to grab myself a nice strong coffee. But whats this lieing next to the coffee machine?? A letter with my full name on it... "GREAT!" I thought, thinking it was my first wage slip... Instead it was a letter of dismissal, focussing on the fact that I am a great heavy plant mechanic / machine operator and a much valued member of the team.. BUT there is unfortunatley no work left. This is the third time this year ive been laid off because there is simply "no more work left". What the hell do I do now?!?! Go on the job hunt again?? Just to get paid off 3 weeks later?? Going from a grand a week to the god awful ú90 a fortnight the jobcentre gives you is just heartbreaking.. My only other options are to head out to norway and work a year on then a year off or head back to college and train to be something else. I really dont want to do either tho. I enjoy my current profession and im constantly being told im **** hot at what I do. I dont want to go to norway as ive just got myself a new girlfriend (been with her for 4 months now and its going perfect) and I have a 6 month old german shepard. Leaving them both behind would be heartbreaking.. I cant live on this dole money tho.. End off.. Someone give me some advice .

Economy tanks -> govt spends on economy -> govt departments expand to carry out government's wishes. As an example, I'm an economic refugee posing as a civil servent in Australia, and the Australia's capital is the only city in the country where employment is down, housing prices are up, car sales are up etcetc. In fact I heard today there wer exactly 152 homeless people at last count, and 352 homeless-housing beds available in the city. - Nobody gets rich in this business. You simply obtain new levels of relative poverty.

I know first hand how you feel, having been made redundant myself in mid-2003 when my company lost their contract with BT and had to lose the team of about 20 of us working on it. I was looking for a very long time till I found a good job in a school, and now I'm in the public sector am thankfully immune to most of the turmoil private business is going thru. You've been paying national insurance your whole working life and some of that is due you now, so even though it's disheartening, you shouldn't feel bad about getting some money back from govmt you are rightly entitled to. If you're really averse to training or returning to study, I can only suggest you be prepared to move to find work and look a little further afield than you otherwise might have. Though many companies are struggling right now, there are plenty that are still turning profits, and if you're good as you say you will find something. Make sure the job center and any agencies (local, online, specialist field, etc) are also looking for you. Might be worth checking out the company a little in advance to see how they're faring financially before taking on a role with them, maybe check who they're clients are. At the same time, it might be worth you taking whatever comes your way as a stopgap if you can, so at least you're earning and in emplyment, whilst you continue to look. Was it just you, or were any other of your colleagues also treated to a similar letter today? How big is the company? Good company to work for? Did they give you some form of redundancy payment to help for at least a couple of months? Wish you all the best for the future. -------------

Norway is an option. So is offshore rig. So is expanding or changing your skill base. I don't know about the UK, but in the US they sometimes pay you to do it. There must be some kind of govn't program.

It did mean moving south from Manchester and renting out my beautiful house to strangers, but damn.. i nearly **ing died at the prospect of losing that place completely so i jumped at the chance.. Only suggestion i can bring to you.. would the new lady move with you? I know you guys have only been together for 4 months, but these things can make relationships lots of fun if your both into the idea.. Seriously, Best of luck for the future! You ALWAYS live to your means, and investing half your wages when you have a whole load of responsibilities is almost always a no go. I earn 3 x what i did 5 years ago (ú600 per week) yet a mortgage, a car, paying off my education and actually enjoying life a little takes ALL of that money.. **ing smart ass students eh?"

With one weeks wage I could cover my 1 bedroom flats expenses for a month. And im still paying the finance on my Focus ST. Im a bit of a party animal, and I do enjoy living it up on Edinburghs George street. So I never really had any savings, im only 23 and still in the "lets get wrecked!!!" mood. I do have a little money away which should cover my flat for the next 2 - 3 months but that dosnt leave me with any food budget.. So yea ive pretty much fecked myself! Norways looking so close atm...

Try to cut back on the party animal lifestyle (you really should know betterby now!). If you cant keep your old job try getting a job as a barman at one of the places you frequent, short term only ofc. Do you have an FLT license? if not get one, the jobcentre will pay and it'll make you far more flexible in your employers eyes, try for a hi-reach and even a telehandler licence if you can, that last is easy work and well paid but the license is expensive. The last time I was unemployed (some time ago) I had to make ends meet by doing odd jobs, technically illegal if you do it for cash, but not for food or coupons, I know it seems like begging but whatever works. You say your SO has a lingerie store, does she make her own? does she contract out repair work or employee her own? if the yes and the latter... Beyond that I dont know much about the employment market and options in Scotland since I'm in Wales... Goodluck! Although nowhere near the severity of your situation, I am going through a second bout of the company I work for outsourcing a lot of it's staff. Last time I got redundancy but found another job easily (2006), but this time no-one really knows what's happening for another 30 days. Potentially having to leave behind a gf and dog (especially GSD, as I have a 3yr old) must make it all that much harder for you to decide.
