I'm Australian and I don't care, DT has to be sometime, Australia lucks out, no biggy, just get the bigger roids when I log on and get safer runs through low/null-sec |

Aussies should just play on the Chines servers I'm sure the down time for those servers would be more in line to what they want. Of course you would have to learn how to read Chines, but nothing is perfect.

While DT being from 9pm to 10pm local (Sydney/Canberra) time, it's a little inconvenient, but it's not a big problem - I just have dinner then. I do think that the DT being when it is does hinder EVE's potential development in AUS, but it has to be sometime, and that's just how it works. Flavan Ardene System Blog

I seem to remember reading (years ago) that Australia's population was curious in that they had more females than males...
Most of them blond...
With a hot accent...
By what right do you attempt to win at downtime too?

I know where you're coming from, but unfortunately, it's not going to change.
We have to learn to put up with it and find something else to do. Me, I usually go and play something else like TF2 (an hour on 24 hour CTF instaspawn goes FAST :P) or do a bit more study/assignment work. If I'm home alone, it probably means dinner time.
However, I have to agree with the "what if the shoe was on the other foot?" question.
All these non australians love to come into threads like these (and I admit, there are too many of them) just to say a big f*** off to all the Australian players. I think it would be amazing to see how they'd react if CCP moved downtime to their primetime for once :)
Not economically viable, nor even a smart idea if they did. But it would be the epitome of hilarity to watch all these people scream on the forums, particularly because there would also be all the complaints about "favouring australians".
Ahh, I can dream

It would not disturb me in the least if downtime coincided with my 'prime time' (EST). I'd work around it.

I live in Japan, essentially the same TZ as Australia and I get so tired of people *****ing about this.
Get over it, Australia only has 25 million people, whereas the rest of the world is pushing 5 billion. Unfortunately, you just don't count for much and should get over it.
I've found that during DT I can do stuff with my girlfriend to keep her happy like playing board games and then go back to eve once the server is up.

Is that a euphamisum?
/Kidding...
But seriously, Downtime for me is 12-1, and every day for the last week I've woken up (unusual work hours), gone to play eve and realised its downtime imminent. Big who gives a crap.... plenty of fun to be had without intarnet spaceships....

Have you noticed how EVE downtime is in the middle of an Icelandic work day?
If they cared about fairness they could have a rolling DT that got shifted forward one hour every day, but it's set up for practical reasons.

Edited by: Imhothar Xarodit on 07/05/2009 03:21:36 This will never happen.
The server staff and the devs in Iceland work at GMT+0, meaning downtime is from 11:00 to 12:00. This gives the people there enough time to prepare for downtime and do anything required after downtime.
Moving the downtime around is extremely impractical for CCP. Three hours earlier? That is 8:00 to 9:00, I assume most Devs get to work in this time or aren't even there yet. Three hours later? 14:00 to 15:00, that is not the time you want to do such a crucial task everyday when closing time is approaching and you have been working since morning.
In the end it is the devs who do the downtime maintenance who matter. And no matter when you do it, someone will always be affected.

This.
As an Australian myself, your friends need to htfu and use the hour they get to spend some time doing something different tbh It's not like one hour where you can't play computer games ever killed anyone.

I have a solution to all your problems, 1st all of the aussies move to america (but not west coast, no offense, i hate their accent) then, DT gets moved back 1 hour, then it will hit at 2 am for me, and then for all the british people (i dont hate their accent as much, i just hate all teh words they say that i cant understand) DT will occur mid morning i beleive, then im happy, and everyone else should be happy

As an Aussie player, It happens for me at 7pm (GMT +8) which is essentially prime time for us West Aussies. I maybe get time to play for 30 minutes before DT and usually play for an hour or so when it's back up.
All in all, it only happens for an hour and isn't that disruptive. I mean, look at WoW (yes I compared :)) it's down for 8 hours or whatever and it takes up the entire of our primetime on a Tuesday night...
TBH, it's ONE hour... i'm sure most players can do other stuff in the middle of DT. My CORP has a very active set of forums so even if it's just spamming your life away. Either that, or get up and move around :) The only real issue is when it's patch night... and they take the extra to get the servers up... Pretty much means I miss out on playing for that particular night but I can live with it...
Core players will disagree probs :)

The EVE downtime placesment is fine!
Honestly it is... and I live on East Coast Australia.
It takes a while to figure out that it is fine, but once you do you love it.
Honestly... the time arround DT is DEAD TIME. that's why CCP puts it there. It allows long patches to run into the most dead of deadtime.
The peak eve time, esp in Euro areas of EVE, is 1800 to 2200 ET. This is when you want to play anyway... Playing in deadtime is only good for afk mining anyway, moving some goods around, that sort of thing.
To play EVE in Australia, do the following:
Get on at 6-7pm. Do your housekeeping stuff, posses, hauling, some mining, all the boring stuff.
At DT, turn off the PC. Seriously. DT will run long and cheese you off. And there will be nobody on after DT anyway. You are wasting your time.
Go to bed. It's DT, the best place is bed. Take the gf for an early night. Whatever. You do more good sleeping coz its DEADTIME anyway.
Get up at 3-4am. 6 hours sleep is heaps. Gamers don't need sleep, and they can nap at work anyway if they have a job. You play till 7am 0r 8am... or however late you can squeeze in before work... And it makes getting up for work way easier.
PLay eve. Dude. 4am in EVE is peak time and it's all happening. This is the real EVE. there are actually PEOPLE there... makes PVP a lot easier.
And if you don't work, have a day off, it's a weekend, you can catch the US timezone later in the day or have a nap, ready for tomorow.
Play EVE the way it was meant to be played.. In PEAKtime, not deadtime :P

DT is at this time because CCP staff likes to have lunch break at this time. The whole server and database maintenance is just made up.
Office speakers: *DING* Server crew: ah, DT notice *press 1 hour countdown button* Eve Client: Dear players. etc... [1 hour later] Office speakers: *DING DING DING* Server crew: *power off* Employees: Lunch time! Eve Client: Disconnected from server Aussies: #@%&!!@# Me at work: *gives not a damn* dum di da dum

We fill the sky with a giant mirror satellite or two, and it projects the sun down onto the earth so it's day time everywhere at the same time, and at night they flip them selves around to block the sun so it's night time the same time everywhere.
Just about the only thing that would save you guys. If you can survive the terrible weather effects that would occur. ----------------------

'Twas the movies that shifted Paul Hogan into annoying. Back in the day, the Benny Hill Show, Paul Hogan show, and Dave Allen At Large was our holy trinity.
