Anyways, the Mael isn't a great WH ship in any event, its local rep bonus goes to waste and you'd have to sacrifice guns for RR.
Your problem OP wasn't that you used a Maelstrom, it's that you tried to take on w-space above C3 solo.

I went into a Class 5 in my Harby, warped to one of the Core Garrison sites to see what would be there, came out of warp to find 3 battleships and a Sirius sentry. They all locked me, volleyed and my 4.5k shields were gone. Needless to say I warped right back to the WH entrance and left.

Mael's are quite fine in class 5's Just class 5's are *not* really solo'able in any single BS imo. (although we did watch an alliance mate run a class 5 mag site in a marauder, way cool but too slow) We run Class 5's and routinely have multiple Maelstroms in the fleet. We rely on shield buffers and always bring 2-3 basilisks with us into class 5's. Our standard fleet is made up of 3 bassies, 3-5 bs's shield buffered and resisted, cov ops and salvage destroyer.
