I need to get a new computer due to girl issues. (she's running off w/ mine.) I have a budget of $1200 for hardware not including screen. I'm looking to put money into the motherboard and ram and go cheap elsewhere - the idea is to upgrade down the road. It's been a while since I put mine together. I had after upgrades an AMD 4800 x 2 w/ an 8600 GTX. Asus motherboard.
What is the way to go now? Intel looks like it's beating amd in performance and price. Looking for suggestions as I'm pressed for time these days.

i7 and DDR3 if you can afford it, a Q9550 if you cant (i strongly suggest you buy a crossfire or SLI capable mobo especially for the ATi cards as you can get 2 cheap ones in crossfire for intense processing power), 3GB Ram is a must, 6GB a enjoyable expirience (or 4 if you go DDR2)rest of the money throw onto a nice case, an SSD if you got cash left over and ofcourse a graphics card (I would suggest ATi for economic yet powerful) or Nvidia with their new GTX295 being kings of the gaming GPU hill. Intel are indeed boss in the CPUs atm but the highest end AMD quad cores aint too bad.

Intel chipsets are very nice, specially if you want to go crossfire, wich as it stands, is a good alternative to Nvidia if you want to go multi-GPU. Go for Gigabyte mobos aswell. ---

Your post is far worse than AMD.
I highly recommend buying AMD.
Phenom II 940 4870/4980 Gigayte motherboard 4-8GB RAM
Great system that will last you two years, especially if you overclock. I have had my Q6600 for more than a year now and I won't be upgrading unless something breaks for another year at least and when I do upgrade I will buy AMD and not Intel. I love my 4870 and will definitely buy another AMD card as long as AMD keep making very affordable, yet powerful, cards.

AMD cards are powerful, but they are not built to last and the drivers will leave you scratching your head over how they fail so hard.
n-vidia cards on the other hand are built to last and give excellent performance and the drivers work like a champ.

gfx cards?
been using ATI (amd, since they bought ATI) for years, and until now never had problems with drivers.
in fact, it was me being tired of stupid NV driver bugs that made me change for ATI.
also, in terms of multi-GPU configurations, crossfire has been taking leaps ahead of of SLI, in terms of performance and compatibility, altho it still not quite there. ---

Actually, you are correct. My main gaming PC, not the one I listed above, has a TNT2 Ultra still in it. For a while I have been concidering replacing that with a Geforce 2 MX but as nVidia cards are made to last I see no reason.
