I have noticed that there are very few if any veldspar asteroids available in the safe 0.9 zones in the last five hours before server restart. The best time for me to play is after work and when I get home that's the time I have before the server restarts. I am in the Anttanen system and yes I know I can go elsewhere to find veldspar in the lower security zones but why should I have to do that? I pay to play just like everyone else so shouldn't I have the luxury of mining in relative safety like everyone else instead of having to mine the low security zones because theres nothing left in the high security zones. It seems a bit unfair to me and other players who play the last few hours before restart. I am playing right now and it's about 3.5 hours before restart and there's very little veldspar available.
I've only been playing about 3 weeks and except for the problem finding asteroids late, I love this game

"Safe" is .5 and above... get out of .9 and out of high-traffic systems. That's you problem. I just did a wee bit of ratting in .5 and stared at huge belts full of Veld (amongst others)...
Quit playing it so damn safe, and get out...

Try backwater lowsec, or do as mentioned above and scan down sites/use mission sites. --

This is by design, it's a game mechanic to spread people out and reduce the load on the server. Not to mention it gives a reason for areas to be populated. When mining you want to find somewhere a little more isolated. If you insist on mining in the most populated areas you will have to make do with earning less isk.
0.5 to 1.0 are all pretty safe, you only have to worry about very easy NPCs for 0.5 to 0.8, which should be of no challenge to anyone who has played for more than a few days.

Edited by: Shivago on 10/05/2009 10:52:57 I'd advise you to do what have already been stated. Run level one combat missions until you get a deadspace pocket with ore in it. You can find agents that hand out missions that are mostly in 1.0-0.9. In those systems you do not have to worry about respawns of normal npc rats once you have cleared the pocket itself.
I am currently farming a pocket that contains 560,000 veldspar. Every day after downtime it respawns.
Missions expire after six days so that is the time you have to use the pocket daily. After that turn in the mission and run more untill you get a new pocket. It might be prudent to aim for level two missions as they have more ore but that is down the trail and not right now. ------------------------------------ I'm the damsel in distress. I find plenty of veld in high sec.
Hint 1: get away from the heavily populated areas.
Hint 2: stationless systems, even close to hubs, don't have many miners. It's easy to set up a POS.
Hint 3: if you absolutely need a station, there are plenty of good mining systems far from the hubs.

Edited by: Tres Farmer on 10/05/2009 11:16:41 For those nasty .5-.8 belt-NPC train combat drones (hammerhead are best for this) and get used to some red color, where your shield/armor gauge is at. Your ship will still be intact and usable, even when those NPC have removed your shields and armor.. slap a small armor repper on and get it back up, after you killed those NPC.
By using drones for this, you can have as many mining lasers as you can field. good luck.

People say get away from the hubs, but even 10-12 jumps away from the nearest hubs most of the belts are dry.
I flew from jita, down to the surrounding minmatar systems, then up around gallente space and could only find piddly little roids that wouldnt even last 1 3 min cycle.
I think the only place to find decent big roids in non scannable/non mission areas is down in <.4 or 00. Anyway, don't you just hate it when your reading a signature that looks like its part of the post! |

Hey those are some good ideas! I didnt think of finding those small hidden pockets, I just did a mission tonight and there was veldspar WOOHOO! I just got a retriever mining barge for about 5,000,000 ISK (hard to save) plus two strip miners for another 1,500,000 ISK each and I am still saving for insurance. For now I don't want to risk losing it to pirates or is it "rats", lol not to familiar with the terminology yet. Oh and thanks for another good idea, using the drones for defense sounds like a plan but going to have to train for a while. I'm curious about scanning though, is there a way to find asteroids with it? I've found things like wrecks and stuff using my scanner's but I can't seem to interact or travel to them.
EVE Online has incredible depth, so I think it's going to take a while to get the hang of it but it's fun exploring and discovering all those little niche's
Thanks for the help folks I'll be back frequently to see if there is more helpful info.

I think you mean the directional scanner.. no, this just gives you information about objects further out, than your visible range goes, but you can't warp to it (usefull in hostile space, you know?)..
The method that can find warpable roid-fields is the system-scanner (the tab to the left of the directional scanner). Though, you can only find cosmic anomalies without probes, which don't contain that much roids as far as I know. If you want to find roid-fields with that thing (cosmic signatures > gravimetric sites) you'll have to use Core Probes and a Core Probe Launcher.. can of worms from your point of view.
Best advice for this: join "EXPLORATION" channel ingame and read their guides there. Or browse to the Mission & Complexes Forums and see if you can find some info there.. Exploration is as complex as mining from a profession point of view ;)

to find velspar roids containing around 60-80 000 minerals each, with about 60 roids in a 1.0 or .9 :
-Dont need high skills. -put one scan probe at each of the planets in the system (dont need on all planets, usually 3 is enough) -set them to 32 au - no need to move them at all.
Warp on everything that show up 100 %, some will be little crappy npc site with no roids and strange structures, but others you will get the dream of all miners.
IMPORTANT STUFF :
Keep in mind that once you kill that last npc, that you warp away, the site dissapear... so make sure you dont pop that last npc or that you leave a corpmate, buddy, alt, girlfriends in the site so you can get your hauler.
Site might be hard sometimes to find as 'Wormholes explorer' found them before you, and they kill the npc pirates, making the site dissapear. Killing all the npc pirates will make that site dissapear, but a other one will spawm in about one hour, maybe less. A different one.
On weekend your gonna have a hard time finding one as everyone and their dog is scanning to get in wormholes or just simply to get your belt.
But on a quiet (7-10 player in local) in system, you get lucky alot.
Site will stay there as long as nobody kill all the npc pirates and it, even after downtime. But as soon as there is nobody in it, and that last npc pirat is dead, you warp away and site dissapear will juicy roids.
hope this help.

While I do think there is available veldspar out there if you look for it (move away from trade hubs), I do wish that nothing had a predictable respawn in Eve, including roids. It'd be nice if things just respawned randomly, throughout the day. Alas...

Some randomness might force more movement in the mining trade, instead of the same people eating the same belts day after day.
But yeah, you definitely have to get away from busier systems. Sometimes you don't even have to be that many jumps from busy systems in order to find good spots. The population thins out very quickly.

Veldspar might be the highest paying ore right now, but if you can't find any, then mine another ore.
The time you spend looking for Veld is wasted, you earn nothing while you're looking. So mining something with a slightly lower value makes sense, even if you're earning slightly less per minute mining, at least you're earning something, rather than flying around looking for Veld. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? I have had no trouble finding large veldspar roids.
However, just mine everything. If you have 3 hours to play eve, then just mine for 3 hours (if thats what you want to do). Spending 2 hours looking for veldspar and then mining for 1 hour won't make you as much isk as just mining scordite or plag for 3 hours. That way, if you want you can also stick to 0.9+ sec status systems.

I just pop the entire belt I'm in. Pick first spot, mine everything within 15km, move 25-28km along belt, rinse wash repeat.
I rarely have a time when I'm not running lasers constantly for an hour or two, til I go to bed or whatever.
You don't make money while you are hunting for the "perfect" belt, only while the lasers are running.

My rule of thumb: if there are more people in local than asteroid belts, move to another system.
I've found that 4 light scout drones will handle any NPC rat spawn down to 0.5 systems. Just make sure to use the appropriate damage type ones. I don't even use a shield booster in Empire.
Originally by: Biggie Rawls You don't make money while you are hunting for the "perfect" belt, only while the lasers are running.
Last evening I broke my personal ISK per hour record by mining a lot of 2-cycle and under Veldspar rocks in my Retriever. I was too lazy to find a "perfect" system. My industrial hauler handled the sub-cycle ones with his single Miner II.
6 days left to my Hulk.
