I've recently just started to get into T2 frigates and cruisers and I've noticed that the insurance that you can buy on them don't really cover the cost of the ship. On T1 ships if you bought the base insurance it would return about 50% on the ships value. If you bought the premium insurance it would return like 125% of the ships value. With T2 ships the premium returns like 10-15% of the ships value. Is this the trend with all T2 ships?

T2 ships give payouts based generally on the T1 hull. That equates to not a lot of money, compared to the price of the ship. That's really what makes T2 ships more expensive than T1 ships. A battleship is a pretty cheap ship, because even though you're dropping 100 mil or so up front, you get that much back when it blows up, so the real cost is platinum_insurance_cost + modules_cost. A t2 ship costs a good bit more, because you're paying for the hull+modules_cost, and the insurance payout is rather minimal.
Tl;dr, prepare to pay more when flying (or more specifically, when losing) T2 ships.

Insurance is based on mineral cost.
Since T2 ships have lots of expensive stuff go into making them on top of the minerals so ^^^ what he said applies.
It is usually a bit more than the equivalent T1 insurance would be but it's still not that much.

Yes - and it's intended, too. The "base price" of most T2 ships is similar to their T1 counterparts, and as this is what insurance is based off, you'll get similar payouts as you would to losing T1 ships of the same hull.
This is by design.

However, do not confuse "doesn't pay the purchase price of the ship" with "insurance is not worth it"
Cause those two things are unrelated to one another.
An Ishtar has an uninsured payment of like 4 million isk or so (I don't remember precisely, but it's in that area).
Platinum insurance on an Ishtar is 5.3 million for 17.9 million.
So, uninsured, you get 4 million. Insured you get 12 million.
When given the option of getting 4 or 12 of something you want, who takes the 4? Yes, insurance is worth it, if there's any realistic chance of losing the ship.
When insurance is NOT worth it is if you burn through a cycle or two of payments without the ship exploding...but that's just as true for T1 as T2 as T3.

yes.
I bought a BS that i thought was cheap for 888 million isk off a contract.
why does my insurance only cover 90m of it!!1oneone
base cost equals insurance payback, not the price players are willing to pay!
*shock*

Think of it this way: once it blows up, you'll gain 18 mil that can be spent towards buying another Legion.
