Could someone tell me how a maxed covert op's pilot with rigs/implants can't pin down a crappy Blood Raider plex?
100% hit on the signature after moving probes about abit, I move the probe a little still %100 - a yellow dot appears... wheee nearly there, lower the AU of the probes it's still 100% and now I have a huge red area. wtf. Move the probe back abit, yellow dot, back the other way, huge red thing, move the other prohe now a red circle... hmmm 30 minutes into this annoying game of catch the annoying signature !****! pressed the recover probes button. Oops.
As a long time user of the old system I'd just like to say. YOUR NEW PROBING SYSTEM IS ****ING *******S!
Ok rant over.. btw anyone want to buy a cov op's pilot?

You must learn the ways of the Probe-Deviation. --- The Gate: Lol, try targeting me in a fleet fight. The Station: No U. |

I was scanning things down in an un-bonused, un-rigged frig yesterday no problem. You're sure you were using four probes to correctly quadrangulate the signature's location? I only ask because I know that I'VE forgotten to use four probes before, it's easily done.

Don't get upset at the new system just because you don't know how to use it.
As said above, you need 4 probes in order to locate a signature in 3D space.
Once you have a yellow dot, position probes so one is above, below, and to either side of the signature. Make sure all of the scanning ranges overlap in the middle where the signature is. Scan and see what your strength is. If it's still below 100%, lower the scan range of all your probes, re-align them to the signature, and scan again. You will then get 100%, unless your skills keep you from doing so.

to overcome deviation woes, you can tighten in one probe at a time instead of reducing the range on all 4 together... or have a 5th probe with a much larger range over the whole area to catch the sig in case your main 4 lose track of it.
i just hate when i have it centered nicely between all 4 probes at 8 AU, reduce to 4 AU and get... *nothing found* ... or a hit from only 1 or 2 probes...
~~~~~ Remember, EVE is a sandbox and other MMOs are rock gardens. Pretty rocks can be collected, but collecting sand is pointless. Instead build a sandcastle and keep it from being knocked down. |
A common mistake is to get your probes too close to target so that they end up not being able to triangulate the signature.
An important thing to remember is that when the dot is red or yellow, the actual target is NOT located at the dot, it is some deviation away from the dot. So if you shrink the size of your probes too far you will lose proper placement of your probes. For example, the actual site may be 0.5 AU away from that yellow dot. So if you shrink your probes to 0.25 and drop them on the yellow dot, you may end up getting no results because none of your probes are actually hitting the actual site anymore. If you get one red sphere that means only one of your probes is hitting the target. If you get four red spheres, it means your probes are all hitting the target from the same direction, so there's nothing to cross-reference with to pinpoint. ----------------------------------------------------
As a long time user of the old system, the only things I have against the new one are these:
1. Change the visual effect back. Dear god please, the circles are ruining my fovea.
2. Yay! Exploration is going to be important now! Oh... All that skill training to be in a niche is effectively useless... Since any alt and his friend can jump in and do exploration now.
I realise the really hard complexes are there for the dedicated explorers, but even those can be found without too much dedicated skill training. I'd really like to see something that's just for explorers. How about a corp dedicated to finding mysteries and artifacts of ancient times, floating in space. There could be mission arcs where the exploration pilot has to hunt down the clues to find the final site containing some wonder from previous eras.
Perhaps even high level exploration missions that send you on the path of finding sleeper influence in the eve cluster. Rewards could be high level tech 3 salvage/datacores etc. It'd be one way to lower prices of T3 stuff...
