I'm fairly new so pardon if this question is too open ended/asked 1000x/etc/etc.
What's a good salvager ship? (preferably Caldari as that's what I'm skilled for). Mostly looking to go clean up my wrecks after missions. I just started doing lvl3s in a Drake.
I imagine something quick with a good cargo hold and high slots for a Salvager and a Tractor beam. Maybe something like a Heron?
Thanks :) |

Noctis is the top tier salvage ship with salvage and tractor beam bonuses. It is plain out amazing.
Cormerant will do well for cheap. About 1 Mil, 8 highs for tractors and salvagers. 450m3 Base Cargo.
Good Noctis 60-75mil Rigged Cormie with 3 Tractors and Rigs around 8-12mil.

Destroyers work great for light salvage duty. Loads of high slots for salvagers and tractor beams. Catalyst has best potential cargo capacity, followed closely by the Coercer. Cormorant has the least by far, since it only has one low slot for cargo expanders. It does have the largest cargo hold before mods, though.
Once you start doing level 4's you'll probably find that whichever destroyer you choose won't be able to keep up with the amount of loot you're collecting. Although the salvaged materials themselves take up very little room, all the modules and ammo piles up and you'll be making multiple trips. At least, this was true before Inferno. Haven't done any salvaging since, and with no more meta 0 drops you might find that the volume of loot is enough for a destroyer. But as enemy ships start to orbit at longer ranges the distance between wrecks will get bigger and bigger and you'll start to hate flying between them, even with a MWD. That's when you want to train for a Noctis. Being able to reach every wreck on the map without having to move an inch is pretty sweet. |

Awesome suggestions guys. Above and beyond.
Looks like the Noctis is the eventual goal, but I'll start with a Destroyer (probably Cormorant just because it's convenient) to get me started with the lvl3 missions.
8-12 mil is a good cheap start and we'll see how quickly it returns its investment.
Really appreciate the replies. |

Noctis is obviously the ultimate goal, but with a ~100M price tag (fitted/rigged), it's a hefty investment.
As for the bit about needing to make multiple trips, that's just not so. Other than the occasional WC, X Extravaganza and maybe The Blockade, a ghetto salvage dessie can pretty much handle any mission. Especially a Catalyst w/ 1 or 2 cargo optimization rigs.

You're very welcome.
BTW - you won't need 8-12 million to build your first salvage destroyer. The tractors will make up approximately 80-90% of the cost. ~5M should get it done.

I now remember what I was thinking about when I thought of having to do many trips in my Coercer that made me shell out for a Noctis: drone poo. But those days are gone forever, I guess. |

Ah...yes..I concede that fully. Drone poo needed to be done with multiple trips in a dessie. And, yes...those days are over |

It's not a ship, it's the ability to multibox and have an alt account. Without that you will most likely be spending more time going back and forth than actually running missions, i.e. your profits may actually be lower and if you loot/salvage/sell.
And if you have that dediciated alt, train it to destroyer/Noctis/Orca in that order. You will want it for level 4s anyway so better to start now. i am a dude playing-áa dude disguised as another dude |

Meh, not so much. There are definitely certain missions I don't bother looting/salvaging (like pretty much anything vs. Sansha). But, for the most part, my ISK/hour is WAY higher when I full clear and slurp than when I just clear...or blitz. For the record, I am currently working with a single account. |

Noctis.
Highs: 5x tractor beam, 3x salvager Mids: Sensor booster, cruiser mwd. Lows: Cargo expanders.
Works fine. A bit pricy, but it works great. |

Noctis is of course best but since you are new, if you are any race but Caldari I would suggest the destroyer, for Caldari a Kestrel has half the highs of the Destroyer but can be fit to have more cargo space and its faster. |

Since destroyers aren't much good outside of blob warfare and getting blown up or ganking, they are most only good for salvaging. You can easily fit salvagers and tractors in their high slots and go to town. |

I've been doing lvl 1's for the matari for about the past 3 months they are the last empire faction I can't do lvl 4's for and it bothers me. I was in the habit of looting everything as I went and haven't been worrying about salvage as I tried to rush through missions. I usually just reprocess everything and sell all the minerals after 16 missions while I'm waiting for the storyline mission to come in. With the new changes to loot drops and drone poo my 16 mission mineral pile has dwindled from typically between 1 -3 million isk to a little over 100,000 isk. Its really not worth it anymore to loot at this level, its been a while since I've done a level 4 so I'm not sure about that. Has the salvage changed much,? In the days of yore I made about as much or more in loot and salvage as I made in mission rewards and bounties on a level 4. Mission rewards were typically the smallest part. |

Since the destroyer buff this isn't strictly true anymore, they're decent small-gang/solo PvP ships and are still perfectly decent for running L2s.
But, yeah, they're the best light-duty salvagers, better than the Noctis in, say, w-space where there's not a lot of volume. |

Considering the changes to the loot tables and the lower volume of drops, are Cargohold Expanders needed? Wouldn't armor hardeners or overdrive injectors be better? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= It's not paranoia if everyone really is out to get you.-á |

The second you can get a Noctis, do it. If you like salvaging your missions, the quality of life improvement is worth every ISK of the hull cost.
4x tractor beams, 4x salvagers 10MN afterburner, SEBO Lows are a crapshoot. I've never needed cargo expanders on any missions so far, so I nano mine to cut the obscene align time. Rigs: salvage tackle of course. |
