I'm having the same problem. Tried with a full clean patched install, but it crashes right after splashscreen. It's only been for few days since I changed to Ubuntu from Windows after noticing that EVE Online works with Wine. Too bad that it's not working anymore. :(
If anyone cares, here's the error:

That's the best part of Linux and open source: problems that appear have thousands of dedicated and talented people working on it for free, rather than a few dozen controlled by a corporate agenda.
I'd be happier if they released a native client for Linux and Mac. Unfortunately that means it will need to be recoded with OpenGL, which is no small task.

They had a "native" linux client (devloped by TransGaming) but it was horrible, slower and worse looking than runing windows eve with wine. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- The sentence below this one is true. The sentence above this one is false. |

You shouldn't be posting CCP responses in the forums, it violates the rules.
My understanding for dropping the Linux client was that (1) Cider sucks, and (2) the official wine ran EVE better anyway. They have to support wine for the Mac client, anyway, so they will get around to fixing it. Also, since this issue happens on windows too we'll see a fix in no time.

Yes transgaming could NOT keep up they did a good job get getting GTA to play on linux but they coudlnt deal with eve and the massive player base so me and Gilbert T droppd there service and moved to wine were it ran just fine until today and tbh it ran better in wine than cedega

It was hardly a native client -- it used a special version of wine called Cider that gets compiled into the game. Unfortunately Cider is horribly out of date compared to the official wine and misses out on a lot of improvements.

Well CCP afaik hasnt given a good reason why they dont support linux users besides the fact that "More people use Windows" and our money isnt worth there time.

I woudnt be suprised if MicroSoft is paying CCP cash to not support Linux now that EvE Online has become a very big hit in the mmo world . And thats why CCP cant give us a straight answer on why they stopped supporting linux ......

splash works fine, then black screen. esc menu opens, nothing shown in sound tab, crashes after fiddling with tabs a while or trying to close the window

I think there are enough conspiracy theories already. While EVE is a big hit (growing fast), it's still small in total subscribers.. small enough to not matter for MicroSoft

and if CCP did that, there'd also be (nearly instantly) "free servers" which would detract from their income, and potentially from their reputation. while i agree in theory that releasing source code is good, i also understand why they can't. <3
I don't see any reason why CCP would actually release their code so a bunch of freetards can feel better about themselves, but... FWIW, the likelihood of anyone running a successful EVE free server is slim to none. There's way too much infrastructure that goes into actually running the game, and the main appeal of EVE is the massive scale and intergalactic politics. How many people do you see on SiSi on a regular basis?
Anyways, I just wanted to point that out. The reasons for them not releasing their source code is probably more a combination of game industry culture (which is traditionally paranoidly closed source), being self-conscious about a lot of ****ty, buggy code, and the possibility of players maliciously exploiting bugs they find -- CCP has an interest in keeping the game fair, and putting it all out in the open means a lot of server-side (and client-side!) secrets would get out and lead to all sorts of funny behavior, such as autominers that can get around their detection algorithm.

EDIT: Also, forgot to add. I can confirm the black login screen problem.
Kernel 2.6.29.1 GeForce 7800GT with 180.44 drivers Wine version 1.1.21 (no special patching)
Same setup was running EVE perfectly pre-patch.
You understand simple things about client version and SERVER ? I`m don`t think so...

Uhh... last I checked, the answer was "Cedega sucks, and WINE users are much better at getting this up and running on Linux. Use Wine instead."

Yep, same here @ 32-bit 2.6.29-ARCH / 9800GT / Nvidia 180.51 Pre-patch client works perfect (checked it after patching with separate install).
After patching: splash screen, black screen; esc menu works, but eve crashing strait after opening it.

I tried using the manual patcher. It got a file compare error after completing the file copying (Step 3/3). Leaving the client broken - reports file corruption now.
I'm in the process of downloading the full installer but don't have much hope for it working either.
Pity CCP saw fit to not let us know about this patch until the last moment. Prolly only a few hours left of skill training. :(
