I was in GAME yesterday to see if there were any new releases out which could tempt me but there was hardly anything new.
Games like FarCry and Halo: Combat Evolved were still in the Top Ten chart and they've been out for well over a year!
When you look at the rest of the games it is mostly RTS games like Age of Empires/Ground Control II and Sims.
Looking at the X-Box and Playstation games was even more disappointing - because their games look exciting, dynamic, and are breathing fresh life into tired old genre's.
What's wrong with PC Games developers? All they seem interested in doing lately is pushing the limits of hardware with graphics but with nothing substantial behind it (Doom 3 being the perfect example of graphics over substance).

They've basically done it all. Only thing to advance is graphics, as gameplay in RTS and FPS genres are pretty much as advanced as they can get, without direct neural interfaces and the like

Josh, as someone who works in a small to medium sized GAME store, I can tell you that we hardly get sent any PC titles, ditto with gamecube, seems all we ever get sent is PS2 and Xbox crap. On a second note, there's some damn fine titles coming out in the next month or so, HL2, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War (better than WC3 imo) and Rome: Total War, so not that bad in the coming months. ---------------------------------------- Space-Slacker |

Josh is right...to much graphics...its good and all but the gameplay sux. Take Final Fantasy 7 for example, graphics kinda sux(compared to today) but still one of my fav. games to play. Neural interface would be cool to have btw

Yes there should be a influx of top pc games in the coming weeks/months albeit mostly sequels. Some of the ones i am keeping an eye on and looking foreward too are Vampire: the Masquerade-bloodlines, Rome TW, HL2, Starship troopers, Black & white 2, champ/football manager, pro evo soccer 4, KOTOR 2 and Stalker. . Although there are many console games coming out most are second rate, even the the expansion pack for call of duty will be better than nearly all console games and the only console game i am looking foreward to is GTA:SA. I know what you mean though in that there seems to be a lack of innovation atm but i would say that is in gaming in general as pretty visuals and sequels seems to be dominent.

Also Josh, you gotta remember - we're at that time of year when xmas is coming up - but summer is just over. No-one is really spending any money now for about a month - then early to mid october the xmas rush begins.
You wait till next month

On the other hand, the release of Half-Life 2 DOES mean the release of Vampire:Bloodlines, a game I am looking forward to buy.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. A genuinely good game will last. Those games staying on top does not mean there are no more good games, just none that have surpassed the level set by the games you mentioned. (both superb FPS's)

Honestly, I saw this coming. As a developer which would you rather code for: A static platform where you only have to deal with one set of equipment, or a dynamic platform with software/hardware from many manufacturers? Coding PC games must be a nightmare with all the hardware and software out there. Trying to get it compatible with EVERYTHING, and getting raped by your playerbase if something is wierd. It's only getting worse as hardware becomes more complex. Shoot, there was an emergency ATI patch for Doom 3 days after it's release. You don't have to deal with that stuff on consoles.

What does the general player base keep asking for though? A lot of PC gamers really aren't gamers. They are obsessed with numbers. I ran into a guy at work who said he was a hardcore gamer. The first thing he asked me was what my rig scored in 3dMark. Who cares? It plays all my games just fine. I don't care if I can run Quake 3 at 150 fps with full ansio/AA at 1600x1200. Remember, the people like that are the ones with the money to blow on games left and right. They're also a vocal part of the consumer base.
I have to disagree with you a bit on Doom 3. You have to keep in mind what they were trying to accomplish. Doom 3 was supposed to be a straight shooter, with a rich, atmospheric enviroment. That graphics engine would mean nothing without an incredibly talented design team. If you want a more substantial plot, then Half Life 2 will probably be the game for you. (I hope!)
Now my question is, who's going to come up with the next TETRIS? That would be a true measure of success.

Call of Duty is too unrealistic, I don't like shooting 60 germans a mission who have the intelligence of Sylvester Stallone in Rambo. No flair.

It's not really hard for an RTS to be better than WC3. Using that as a comparison chip is sort of like a baseball team claiming dominance after beating the Expos. ----------- Fighting for the ideals of freespace, posthuman ethics, and rock & roll. |

Don't know if you would be interested, but download and sign up as a Beta Tester in Tribes 3-Vengeance. I have played that game since the first release(Tribes), and its a great game to play during that one hour of downtime each day on EVE.At the moment its LAN or MULTI player.More then an hour of playing will make your eyes pop out of the sockets. BTW, you can find more info on www.fileplanet.com It took less then 5 minutes to sign up and a short while thereafter to download the beta game and keycode! *With a gun barrel between your teeth, you speak only in vowels.* |

I did the same thing in GAME the other day. Nothing inspiring to buy so I bought some budget racing titles (TOCA race driver and Need for speed both for a tenner) and spent the rest on vinyl...
Looking forward to HL 2 and Rome TW. Until then, its replaying Zelda WW and Tiger Woods on the GC. -------------------------------------------- Dead

I think developers are waiting for hardware to reach a new plateu and then they'll make some crazy hybrid games that seemless intergrate 2-3 differnt genre's into a new gaming experence.
I also think PC game are more headed towards online play, and for advanced MMO's , devs really need for more of the population to get on faster conenctions becuase there is only so much u can do with a 56k, but at the same time its not viable to make a MMO that u cant run on a 56k becuase so many people still use it.
Personally I could see a sweet MMO hybrid of Planetside crossed with Freespace 2. bascially taking the grunts perspective into all out space battles with player controlled capital ships (one guy on each turret), player boarding parties to capature or destory ships from the inside as well as classic 1v1 fighter dogfights outside. with a few major stations where the grunts can get some good ground combat.
So my prediction hardware to new plateu, general world upgrade of internet connections and hybrids crosses putting some great gnere's togetehr in one game and allowing players to choose what they want to play in game be it FPS, space fighter sim, mechs, RTS commanders etc etc etc

Games I played on the Amiga 500 and that had no hardrive and ran off floppy disks and had more gameplay than the games I see today. not to mention the amoutn of gammming goodness they could fit onto a single 1.4MB floopy disk
80-90% of CD's game data is just eye candy, and as the old saying goes too much candy will make u feel sick.
I'd take a 2D 2bit black and white game with unreal gameplay over the new DOOM3 or unreal graphics engiens with absolutly no thought put into acutaly gameplay.
AND WTF EVER HAPPENED TO REPLAYABILITY ???
I used to play old games over and over and they were still cool, now days I'm lucky to sit once through before I'm bored

Evil Genius demo is out. Looks nice and has that 60s feel even to the interface, but more importantly does a good job of making a modern Dungeon Keeper (i heart dungeon keeper, except for that miserable FP dragon level of course ).
I'm hoping Guild Wars lives up to even part of its promise, gameplaywise, what with its guildhalls and PvP system and dynamic content delivery - the tech is proven, now they just need to show me they really will be dynamically delivering content . I was in the "test town" in E3 when they demoed how that works, it was rather nice. There was also a huge outland to explore, most of it empty but gorgeous, and "undocumented" locations i was disappointed not to be the first to discover but who cares, it was still cool. The solo lands are no longer solo-only (tho you *can* go alone), improving the "connected" feel of it all. And there's no online fee.
No monthly fee means i can casually play it if and when i get the chance without endangering my EvE budget, so that sort of roxx0rs.
Oh, i was thinking about making a casual eve-gamers clan in there, too, if anyone else is gonna be playing. Our motto: "we'll fight you tomorrow, we're in space now"
You are in a maze of twisty little asteroids, all alike. |

Oh, i was thinking about making a casual eve-gamers clan in there, too, if anyone else is gonna be playing. Our motto: "we'll fight you tomorrow, we're in space now"
You are in a maze of twisty little asteroids, all alike. |

I went to the game store yesterday and bought Independence War 2. Used and abused for 7 bucks! It's actually a damn good game. I highly recommend it, and Freelancer.
For being a game with a 'strict' storyline, IW2 is pretty freeform and has a few mods that open the entire game after you've completed the main storyline. On that note, it's rather interesting that people are still making modifications for it (and I still haven't figured out how to install them)..
Anyway, it's right.. hardly any decent games coming out lately. I love space combat sims, especially the realistic ones that actually follow Newtonian physics. They're fun because they confuse me! (Starshatter is one of the best Newtonian-following sims I've seen). And to think, EVE still confuses me. ------------ Elucidate - Extraordinarily Lazy Miner |

If you're looking for games with storyline and gameplay over graphics checkout the games at http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/ Avernum is not the BEST rpg i've ever played, but it is very involved and quite good.
Check it out sometime.

one thing you gotta remember though....most of the big name developers are stuck in the middle of development cycles, at least on PC..
Blizzard> Starcraft 2, Starcraft Ghost, Warcraft Worlds...
Bethisda> Elderscrolls 4, new marrowind expansion, Fallout 3
etc, etc, etc....
with EA devowering smaller developers <and not so small> the PC game industry is going south though... EA is run by number crunchers who only care about the bottom line... to hell with orginality and such...

Not enough playtesting with real people, that's my own personal opinion. They seem, as previously stated, obsessed with graphics and since games get hyped with screenshots and short vids, graphics often sell the title.
After a few huge disappointments, I now routinely wait for the demo. Despite looking promising there's been several games in the last year that I had been massively excited about until I actually played the demo, then I just walked away without buying. Sacred and Ground Control II were especially disappointing. Cool enough games with serious play-ability problems. And don't even get me started on C&C Zero hour (which I bought), a game that SHOULD have a full and interesting multiplayer experience given all it's cool features, but with it's speed not adjustable it is strictly for the zerglings. And Warcraft III, a cool game but really lacking in depth.

This is why I play mostly RPGs, a game can have horrible gameplay, bad graphics, and all other sorts of crap in it but if it has an interesting and engrossing story im there. What most games need that most people dont have time for is more developement time. Spend 4 or 5 years working on something. If its good it will stand the test of time when its released after all the market advancements. But hey what do i know.

I think it's safe to say that Grand Theft Auto does not have top notch graphics, the strange thing is I bought Vice City the day it came out and I still play it all the time so that's like 2 years right? I like to try and collect FBI Ranchers.
Also did the new Fallout game completely suck compared to Fallout 2, I saw it was more real time than Fallout 2 so I didn't even bother with it. I think they shoudl make a Fallout 2 with R rated cut scenes, and maybe throw in some **** too.
Warcraft 3 was boring, I played up until I was like 5 levels in with the orcs in the campaign and I completely lost interest.
Also Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 pwns Command and Conqeur Generals
I always wished they'd make an rpg like dragon warrior 3 or final fantasy 3 (version 3 in the US), have like 80 different characters you could be and then just use the extra memory to make the game take like 6 months of playing 4 hours a day to complete with a huge long story line, cut scenes like in Lunar are cool though too.
I wish the newer Romance of the Three Kingdoms games were as good as the second one. 7 kind of stunk but I heard 9 was cool, haven't tried it yet.

I loved it as much as Freespace 2, heh.
For mods, you make a "mods" subdirectory in the main game directory (I think one already exists), and move the zipped mod files there. Do not unzip. A checkbox then becomes available for activating each mod once you start the game and go into Options/Extras.
For further modding, you have to open the resource.zip file, and whatever ini files you want to override, you copy out of the resource.zip file into a resource folder. Put them in the appropriate subfolder in there to match where they are in the zip file.
Specifically, files in sims/ships/player let you modify ships, subsims/systems/player let you modify the behavior of weapons, and subsims/mountpoints let you actually add graphics to the ships.
For example, I've modified the heavy corvette to allow extra weapons on the pilons, and so I added under-the-wing and over-the-wing mounting points that actually show the correct weapons, and have them fire pretty much normally.

Heartily seconded! Avernum is a great game in the footsteps of Wasteland (original Fallout, for the youngsters...), albeit with a fantasy setting. It also does not contain either Elves, Dwarves or Orcs.
