I was in GAME yesterday to see if there were any new releases out which could tempt me but there was hardly anything new.
Games like FarCry and Halo: Combat Evolved were still in the Top Ten chart and they've been out for well over a year!
When you look at the rest of the games it is mostly RTS games like Age of Empires/Ground Control II and Sims.
Looking at the X-Box and Playstation games was even more disappointing - because their games look exciting, dynamic, and are breathing fresh life into tired old genre's.
What's wrong with PC Games developers? All they seem interested in doing lately is pushing the limits of hardware with graphics but with nothing substantial behind it (Doom 3 being the perfect example of graphics over substance).

They've basically done it all. Only thing to advance is graphics, as gameplay in RTS and FPS genres are pretty much as advanced as they can get, without direct neural interfaces and the like

Josh, as someone who works in a small to medium sized GAME store, I can tell you that we hardly get sent any PC titles, ditto with gamecube, seems all we ever get sent is PS2 and Xbox crap. On a second note, there's some damn fine titles coming out in the next month or so, HL2, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War (better than WC3 imo) and Rome: Total War, so not that bad in the coming months. ---------------------------------------- Space-Slacker |

Josh is right...to much graphics...its good and all but the gameplay sux. Take Final Fantasy 7 for example, graphics kinda sux(compared to today) but still one of my fav. games to play. Neural interface would be cool to have btw

Yes there should be a influx of top pc games in the coming weeks/months albeit mostly sequels. Some of the ones i am keeping an eye on and looking foreward too are Vampire: the Masquerade-bloodlines, Rome TW, HL2, Starship troopers, Black & white 2, champ/football manager, pro evo soccer 4, KOTOR 2 and Stalker. . Although there are many console games coming out most are second rate, even the the expansion pack for call of duty will be better than nearly all console games and the only console game i am looking foreward to is GTA:SA. I know what you mean though in that there seems to be a lack of innovation atm but i would say that is in gaming in general as pretty visuals and sequels seems to be dominent.

Also Josh, you gotta remember - we're at that time of year when xmas is coming up - but summer is just over. No-one is really spending any money now for about a month - then early to mid october the xmas rush begins.
You wait till next month

On the other hand, the release of Half-Life 2 DOES mean the release of Vampire:Bloodlines, a game I am looking forward to buy.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. A genuinely good game will last. Those games staying on top does not mean there are no more good games, just none that have surpassed the level set by the games you mentioned. (both superb FPS's)

Honestly, I saw this coming. As a developer which would you rather code for: A static platform where you only have to deal with one set of equipment, or a dynamic platform with software/hardware from many manufacturers? Coding PC games must be a nightmare with all the hardware and software out there. Trying to get it compatible with EVERYTHING, and getting raped by your playerbase if something is wierd. It's only getting worse as hardware becomes more complex. Shoot, there was an emergency ATI patch for Doom 3 days after it's release. You don't have to deal with that stuff on consoles.

What does the general player base keep asking for though? A lot of PC gamers really aren't gamers. They are obsessed with numbers. I ran into a guy at work who said he was a hardcore gamer. The first thing he asked me was what my rig scored in 3dMark. Who cares? It plays all my games just fine. I don't care if I can run Quake 3 at 150 fps with full ansio/AA at 1600x1200. Remember, the people like that are the ones with the money to blow on games left and right. They're also a vocal part of the consumer base.
I have to disagree with you a bit on Doom 3. You have to keep in mind what they were trying to accomplish. Doom 3 was supposed to be a straight shooter, with a rich, atmospheric enviroment. That graphics engine would mean nothing without an incredibly talented design team. If you want a more substantial plot, then Half Life 2 will probably be the game for you. (I hope!)
Now my question is, who's going to come up with the next TETRIS? That would be a true measure of success.

Vampire: Bloodlines does look interest and Half-Life 2 looks like it'll be awesome.
I, umm, acquired Call of Duty yesterday and it's a pretty amazing game too.

No they haven't done a Total War game (Rome, Medieval, Shogun) with multiplayer campaign for Lan yet. Same with GTA, two game series I'd love to have a Lan campaign for.

Call of Duty is too unrealistic, I don't like shooting 60 germans a mission who have the intelligence of Sylvester Stallone in Rambo. No flair.
Try Red Orchestra.

It's not really hard for an RTS to be better than WC3. Using that as a comparison chip is sort of like a baseball team claiming dominance after beating the Expos. ----------- Fighting for the ideals of freespace, posthuman ethics, and rock & roll. |
