Do you guys believe that certificates are a good indication of what skills to train for a ship?

They're a decent guideline but they shouldn't be treated as gospel. Look at the certs, figure out why skills are recommended, and then decide to train them (or not).

The "CORE" and "DEFENCE" certificates are the only ones I would treat as gospel (and even then), the others I would use as a good starting place, so for instance I have no interest in ECM/ECCM so when I look at a certificate I ignore those skills and train the others.
The other thing is that the elite level certificates require you to train skills to level 5 that even long term verterans wouldn't train to 5, or would but only out of lack of other skills to train. |

Not awful, especially for frigates and cruisers. Beyond that, the ship/cert thing kinda breaks down.
Get cores up (except targeting) and then see what the others are getting at and try to interpret the nuance.
For instance, gunnery certs pretty much always require a core requirement: follow the core requirement. It gives you an idea of the support skills you should work on to actually be competent with the weapon system and not just fire the biggest, bestest guns to no effect.
The drone certs are more of a mixed bag. Unless you're dedicated, do not under any circumstances train Ammar spec (trust me; I have Ammar spec 4).
The industrial/mining/trading certs are worthless, but it seems like most people who are serious about a non-combat career have been around the block, so whatever.
tl;dr: Yes, for basic combat ships and skills. Otherwise, no.

In fairness the BASE em resist sucks but they always have a hardener. Plus you ALWAYS want warriors, hammerheads and ogres, becuase they are good general purpose drones, then after that, if you have bay space, you want zerkers, ECM and sundry extra warrirors.
Least thats how i roll...

Targeting 4 as basic core targeting? Multitasking 1 as standard? and i was tanking L4s in a passive shield drake (mix of named/T2) without basic passive shield certificate.
certificates are just a guideline.

I'd say that Targeting is the only "wonky" Core cert - the rest are decent, at least through the Standard level.
And I too was tanking L4's in a passive Drake w/o even the Basic cert though I wasn't far from it, and over time from general skill training I've now got "Improved Passive." Of course it will NEVER go higher than that. No one would be insane enough to train the 4 useless type-specific shield compensation skills all to 5, unless they had a ton of time to waste.
