City of Heroes has, I would estimate, over 150,000 subscribers right now. EVE is a dwarf.

A dwarf maybe, but a very excellent dwarf.
And number of subscribed accounts dosn't always correspond to max logged users. I think Eve is a field leader in that ratio.

150,000 is nothing compared with others - the point is, no other game out there has 11,000 people on one server simultaneously.

First of all, it's not nothing. City of Heroes has been on top of the best-seller list for three months. Second, I don't know if they ever had more than 11,000 players active on the same server but I know they used to come very close even before the popularity spike. I played on the Virtue server and others when they were "lightly" loaded (green dots). And then in-game statistics reported numbers of around 400 and more in each of the server's main areas, e.g. 422 in Atlas Park, 387 in Kings' Row and so on. And there are many areas, though not all are so busy. If you add the numbers, Virtue easily had several thousand people playing at once, more later in the evening (yellow and red dots).

And your point is? We can't be happy with a new record, or what?

I just like to say: well done CCP - now lets aim for 15k before shiva!

lol, I belive I saw an ISD person or one of those, say that there are actually like 50k active accounts...
yall don't think when theres 10k or whatever logged in, thats EVERYONE that has an account, or something, do you?
personally I find 11k people on a server to be a very healthy number, its not winning any industry wide race of who has the most subscribers, but its more than enough to make it a healthy game.

Every MMOG out there has something to draw its player base. Has CoH crested 10k or 11k+ players on the same server, like Champion, Virtue, etc.? I don't know and probably won't find out unless NC Soft releases its connection metrics. It doesn't matter to me though, EVE has done it and with a player base that is 1/3 the size.
Lots of credit to pass around for cresting the 11k+ concurrent users mark, the Devs, the support staff at Siminn and ISD, but most of all, the players. Your efforts and support of CCP and EVE is what makes records like this possible.

Last I heard was an artificial cap (admin set) at roughly 25k. Not sure what the peak hardware capacity is. Oh, and the final concurrent user tally as of 21:15 GMT is 11,284 users. w00t w00t guys!

Agreed.. the best thing about CoH is the character creation process, probably the most detailed and fun I've ever seen.But.. its all downhill from there really. :|

Never played COH and quite frankly I don't care how many they have on line at any one time on any server. Same goes to SWG, Simms etc.
I love Eve, I want to see it survive and grow. I was worried this time last year when we where getting around 5000 players on, and still having lag etc.
Look at the game now. Still got a few bugs and there is still a few things that anoy me. However the figures speak for themselves and the qulity of gameplay and the social side of the game is still keeping me going.
Long may it continue and I hope we hit the 15,000 mark before Xmas.

grats on the 11K breach.
Coh is fun for 2 weeks, looks nice with unique outfits and stuff, gets boring soon. point click, 1, 2, 3, 2, 4, search next mob, repeat. lvlup, search bigger mobs, etc.
But that's just me, everybody their own type of game. |

Sush n00bie. Eve is the only game with 11k on the SAME server at the SAME time. Not subscribers. Who cares about that, FFIX has a few million subscribers, so that game is nothing.
I couldn't care less what game had what amount of numbers, I like this game, end of story.

I played CoH for a brief period...and, as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, it quickly gets boring a couple of weeks after character creation (which, I might add, is very versatile and fun). Cheap thrills. It doesn't have the staying power of EvE.

/me worries for the online gaming community.
And how many of those 150,000 subscribers are online at once in teh same shard? since eve holds the world record,
Now unless a GM can confirm it, im sure they have about 30-40 subscribers to eve, and its prolly alot more now, dont confuse eve to be a dwarf just caus it dont have 35 shards..... Sass Arcane Technologies |

Last night, and again tonight, when the server went over 10k there was noticable lag.
So Hellmar's posts are misleading :(
Still congrats.

Right before this game went live and soon after, some folks in the forums used to mock how EVE would never surpass 4k players. Now that we have surpassed 11k, all I have to say is...I TOLD YOU SO! TOLD YOU SO, TOLD YOU, TOLD YOU, TOLD YOU SO! NEENER NEENER!

We must strive to expand our perspective so we can see what our true reality is." Deep toughts by Mr.Pops, while consuming large quantities of Blue Pill and staring at the EVE gate in Genesis.

Yeah, I mean, the monthy charges being collected for all those hl players must be a....... oh wait. Nevermind.
Let's see 11,000 hl players on 1 server.

I really hope that you are not compering hl mods with EVE ? If you have missed it then EVE is a mmorpg and last time I checked hl is FPS. EVE holds the record (for my best knowledge) for mmorpgs out there. They are not compering their record to FPS games. Hell, I think online Hearts might have more players but still this record lies in ONE(for those who can't see it) server and the big requirement of being a MMORPG(also in caps for those who can't see it).

( and ofc i was out. arse.
/me makes note to log in tonight
Anyho, about CoH, from what i've heard and seen while it was in beta, the game shards in each server area after about ~300 people in each section so you get for example:
Atlas Park 1 Atlas Park 2 Atlas Park 3
Bah, and no PvP till their expansion. It's losing alot of players because of lack of interest, lack of new content for higher players and general lycra overload. )

congrats to CCP for a new record.
personally i don't see the need for comparisons to other games, particularly either FPS or swords and goblins and sh1te (yawn).
could the new record be due at least in part to the 'power of two' cheap second account offer? |

wtf, those are people playing on like 20.000 different servers, no wait, that has to be more like, 50.000 servers. while eve is essentially one server. (yeah yeah, server cluster, but still the same gameworld, as opposed to those HL servers)

Edited by: Hawke on 07/09/2004 09:18:09 Congrats on another record, lets do it again tonight, lets set a record for the number of consecutive broken records
Sure some of these maybe 2nd accounts, but I'm also sure there are a lot of new players discovering the wonders of eve, I have two mates who have started in the last week and are both loving it.
P.S. Partial Hull Conversion and an alpha hull conversion in the same night hunting in 0.5

Ahh you people dont get it... eve has more then 11000 players playing on one server... how many games out there can afford it?? none to be honest. And i love the way CCP keeps making things intrsting in EVE. You always have something to do in eve.
Congrats to CCP for breaking 11000 mark even though i am sure that many-many people have two accounts. but the thing is that server is going fine...and CCP is rolling in money. ================================================== Its not the size of dog in the fight but the size of fight in the dog which matters ================================================== |
