We see the alliances camping one gate after the other. Sometimes a few ships can go past the blockade and allowed to go wandering inside hostile territories. The problem is that there is no tactical advantage of slipping a force through a blockade (or even no way to bring the enemy in disadvantage).
I was thinking that there is only one real use of that empty allied space (apart from the few stations): roids. How about a weapon (probably bs sizes) that can destroy a roid? not mine it, just shoot and watch it go "pop". That would introduce a new kind of warfare in the game. Destroy the sources of income and commerce of the enemy, watch him suffocate slowly. It would also put some more reason to this endless gate camping and patrols would be needed to protect some piece of space.

Somthing like this might be nice. but it should take a bit more effort than one shot and the roid is gone. (a bit to easy dont you think) Perhaps something like a miner laser which works 20x (or 30x) faster but just dumps the ore vapour straight into space. (might be nice if it even left a vapour cloud hanging around for 12 hours or so.)
However there is the market to consider. if you could decimate roid fields what will happen to mineral prices. would this action be considered hostile in empire space? if so what security area whould cause retailation? i would suggest that destruction of roid fields should cause a masive faction hit from the controling empire (including NPC pirate)

Well the advantage is that it is much harder to block you outside the choke point and you can hunt for single members of the enemy alliance? :-)
What we need is a lossiness level introduced to mining lasers and skills, and slower roid respawns. Say a Miner I loses 90% ore by default and you can take it down to 50% with skills, Miner II is already much better... and then you have the Strip Miner I which works 10x as fast but loses 100% by default and 80% with maxxed out skills.
Besides mining there is ratting as well for income in 0.0.

The true question is: Why even bother to stop people from going through a gate if they can't do crap to you once their through? All it really is is just another excuse to kill rookies...
