Tell me this is not true. Please, for the love of all the Gods, Demons, Fallen, Werewolves, Changelings, Vampires, Antedeluvians, Wraith, Mummies, and all treatures of WoD that the MMO will not target 18-25 girls.
WoD is supposed to be a dark, inhuman place, not a playground for all those goth wannabees.

No denying that, I like them myself, very much, but I dont really think that they could pull of something like VtM:Bloodlines was. And WoD players are predominantly male, as are EVE players, and honestly, I fear that WoD could become seriously toned down abnd fluffied up, seeing as what passes as goth these days.

It's a reasonably good simile to convey to a lay audience the scale of the ships we command. I didn't read it as "the ships look just like" the Enterprise.
Actually, I thought the article was surprisingly good. Necessarily, it hugely simplified the nature of the game, but it described EvE very well to it's intended audience. It's good publicity for CCP too.

It makes sense. EVE Online has reached relative market saturation in a growing market. More targetted advertising and word of mouth can only go so far, EVE's growth is restricted by the growth of the MMO market and particularly their chosen niche (25-30 male sci-fi fans). This is likely to increase by Star Trek Online and SWToR bringing in heaploads of new players to this market with the popularity of their IP, some of which will eventually bleed into EVE. Due to EVE's higher than average player retention, as long as the competing games don't have higher player retention rates, those players will tend to accumulate in EVE and it should still see steady growth. But to grow the market quickly requires targeting a new niche entirely and WoD doing that makes sense.
You'll see companies like Funcom, SOE and NCsoft are currently trying to get a game in every bracket they can think of as a way to diversify their product line and lower risk. It's a bit silly when one studio is putting out so many games but it's at least in theory a good idea from a classical marketing standpoint (See the trouble General Motors went through in the 1960s and how they solved it by placing a car in each price bracket). For CCP, it makes more sense to go for maximum penetration of one new niche with the goal that they would dominate this new market. Their current revenue stream is solid and significant, they don't need to diversify so heavily to lower financial risk.
With any luck, WoD will top its genre and see similar a growth pattern to EVE. Though I'd be interested to see how much of an initial influx of players it gains and where those players come from. I think that's key to understanding and explaining any post-launch player retention issues the game may have. Much better than not being able to explain the dropping number of subs and then having to hide the sub numbers from investors like AoC has :p.

Um, 25% increase in subs in less than 6 months is "saturated"? That's the kind of saturation most companies would be pretty happy with.

Did CCP really choose that niche of 25-30 (I agreed with the rest of your post)? None of the people I play EvE with fit in that age bracket, including myself... Because of the relative complexity of EvE and higher levels of concentration required, I would have thought it appeals to a higher age bracket (just an assumption)? I know of a pensioner who played until last year (he got podded in real life and didn't have an up-to-date clone unfortunately... ahem)...
I would like to see some sort of stats for market demographic for the eve player-base if anyone knows of any?

Imho, a truly well-executed representation of the WoD gorup combat mechanics should make that impossible.
Besides, there is always the sewer.
What really interest me is how they are going to implement ghouls, if at all. Would be cool to have some "minions" who can walk in daylight and do your bidding. Hey, what about dual charring? Nighttime, you play your vampire character, in daytime, you play your ghoul.
I am so going to make a Malkavian. Or a Daughter of Cacophony if bloodlines are going to be implemented. I sure hope the demented, all-seeing, nothing-interpreting foresight of our borcken little selves will be implemented well.
As for my earlier booing of the game and its targets, disregard it as a barin fat, the exams are eating away what is left of my mind after a child of the Great Shatterer of Realities Falsehood has made my blood flow with distruption and distortion, and the daimon within me claims ever new terriotires of my sleves with each moth I guide into a cnadle. ______________________________ (sig begins here)

Um, 25% increase in subs in less than 6 months is "saturated"? That's the kind of saturation most companies would be pretty happy with.
No, you're missing the point. A lot of the increase in subscription numbers can be easily attributed to the growth of the MMO market as a whole and specifically the sci-fi genre, which is expanding due to non-fantasy MMOs becoming more popular, which is a result of the fantasy MMO market being saturated. CCP have retained a relatively high level of market penetration within their chosen niche, it's just that the niche is expanding. I'm not saying CCP's chosen market niche is saturated and the sky is falling, I'm saying CCP holds a very high portion of that niche and that it's expanding, which is a very good position for CCP. In fact, it's brilliant that their main competition coming is a Star Trek MMO and a Star Wars MMO as these are more likely to bring in players from outside the market than to steal those inside it that CCP needs. Black Prophecy is the only real contender on the horizon and I still don't know what its gameplay is like.
Originally by: Terror Dactyl Did CCP really choose that niche of 25-30 (I agreed with the rest of your post)?
It's highly likely that CCP just released the game and then watched what type of person makes up the majority of players. That's how most businesses "select" their target niche, they just fling a good product out and see who likes it. It's only after the current demographics have been identified that a company can go on to target them more directly. I'd imagine the vast majority of players actually do fall within that niche.

That's pretty cheap, I wouldn't mind paying the equivilent of $15 a month.
Try more like 15 euros's + transaction fee a month.
Absolute best price you can get online is buying US GTC's for $17.50 a month.
Speak for yourself - I'm paying ú14.99 per 2 months for the rest of the year.
BTW I thought you were quitting eve because you didn't manage to get any cheap play.co box sets which was CCPs fault or something.
I remember saying I'm paying with ISK for GTC's from now on if I don't come across a deal as good as the play.com one as it was the last straw for me on the crappy pricing they do for UK.
A lot of American boxsets would all get brought up by Brits if there were allowed to ship them, I've seen them at good prices if you convert the currency, which just goes to show.

It makes sense. EVE Online has reached relative market saturation in a growing market.

Subs != players.
Of that 25% increase, about half are new alts for a guy called "Imperian", the rest are Goon capital alts.
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

Swings and roundabouts.
Didn't hear a peep from you when the UK was paying about ú9/month.
Instead of blaming CCP, blame the dictator Gordon brown and his cronies.

you didn't correct it at all, you simply showed a lack of understanding that perhaps not everything is based on your currency?

The price list?
Hell, even if you pay in good old € you can get it down to $15/mo. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

WoD is supposed to be a dark, inhuman place, not a playground for all those goth wannabees.
I never realized how fitting that demographic was, until I saw this...
In any case, supported as long as they create an EvE - WoD crossover dating service, longtime subscribers only. ^_^

You've discovered CCP's secret evil plan… I'd watch out for strange dark vans with wierdly-spelled Icelandic words on them from now on if I were you. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

I endorse 18-25 years old girls target audience, sure there are decent ones amongst all the nerds which will play the game!
