I am new at this and have some questions. I have looked through the thread and have not found a complete set of answers that I can understand. so be patient if all these have been asked.
I found an R&D agent that is available to me and it lists Skill A and B both of which I have to the required level. I start research in one of the skills...
1) Could I have done research with the agent if I had only one of the skills and not both?
2) I am now accruing RP points. What happens now? Do I just continue to accrue forever unless I stop the research or do I reach a point that leads to the next step?
3) Do I build any standing with the Agents corp while researching?
4) What else can I do while I am researching? How do I stop the research and what happens to the research if I stop it prematurely (assuming there is a premature stop)?
5) Does the agent offer me Data Cores or do I have to ask for them? Does something tell me when I have enough RP to get a core?
6) Can I get missions from R&D Agents? If so when?

Answers: 1) no you need both but they can be at level 1 even when the agents are level 4 - you get more RP for higher skills.
2) you get RP and can 'buy' datacores with them - that is all you can do with them.
3)No you do not.
4)you can run missions for that agent and get 'bonus' RP equal to a days research. If you stop research you loose all the accumulated RP. (buy datacores before stopping research)
5)you have to ask for them and they are a fixed cost based on type of datacore.
6)yes, daily.

1) Yes, you only get RP for one type of datacore, you only need the corresponding skill.
2) Continues forever. You can however double the daily gain if you do the daily agent missions (Very easy)
3) No, research missions do count for the Storyline Mission Counter however
4) If you stop the research, all RP will be lost.
5) You have to buy them (They cost a specific RP amount). You should be able to purchase your first Datacore after a day or so.
6) Daily, they will EVEMail you regarding the mission. (It's on a 20h cooldown)

A couple of loose end questions...
I understand I can run missions for the R&D agent. Can I leave the station without an R&D mission and not effect the research (i.e. fly my freighter ro pick up purchased goods)?
I understand I can cancel the research but I lose the RP. When will I know the the research is finished? How long can I expect to be "out of commission"?

Once you start research, it will accrue until you tell the agent to stop it. All the R&D missions do is give you an extra amount of research points equal to 1 day's worth. Nothing happens if you fail to do them. Now, if you ask him for one, accept it, and fail to complete it then you'll take a standing hit. Most people start research with an agent and go away for weeks or months at a time, then come back and get a batch of datacores. If you switch agents, the best way is to wait until you get just over an even amount of datacores worth of research points, buy the datacores, then tell him to stop researching. At that point you just go to another agent and start researching with the new one. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Research is an entirely background task. I have research agents in an entirely different region to my usual base of operations (it's even in a different faction of Empire). Sometimes I don't collect datacores for a couple of months or more.
When I go back I sometimes collect hundreds of them. In the meantime I'm flying around playing the game across the other side of the universe.
The research won't stop until I say so, it's that easy. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

The last answer brought up a question that I had not even considered.
Is it possible to do research with more than one agent at a time?

+1 for each skill of research project management.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but even with Research Project Management trained up, you can only run a single job at a time with the same agent. So, you can't be researching two different fields at once with the same research agent. You will need the appropriate skills and standing for the other agents. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Correct, one research job per agent. But you can do the same field with multiple agents, or a different field for each agent etc. Maximum you can have is 6 agents, though usually most people will only have 5 (level 5 of RP Management takes ages)

Edited by: Ruziel on 26/05/2009 23:09:25 Yes there are datacores for each field of study, you can look them up on the market. You generally choose your field(s) of study on one of two factors:
A) Based on your needs for invention. Each invention takes two types of datacores, the number of which varies on the item being invented. For example, modules generally take 4 datacores, 2 of 2 different types, and bigger ships like Marauders take 32, 16 of 2 types.
B) Based on which ones sell for the most profit if you are not going to be using them personally. The amount of profit depends on market conditions.
In both cases you are going to need to do some research.
