Torpedos have short range but higher dps. Cruise Missles have great range but lower dps.
Is that pretty much it?

Torpedos aren't affected by defender missiles in PVE (well they are but they require 2 hits per missile which I've never seen happen)

Torpedoes have harder time dealing full damage to smaller and/or faster moving targets than Cruise Missiles.
Cruise Missile Launchers are easier to fit than Siege Missile Launchers. (I know, WTH? Siege Missile Launchers launch Torpedoes, not Siege Missiles) -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

Torpedoes are not affected by the Guided Missile Precision skill.

Not exactly.
Torpedoes have short range and are slower. Also their explosions are slower. This means that they're useless against small, fast moving targets. They're great for ratting in 0.0 and maybe short range PvP against a battleship but not much more. It also takes more than a single hit from a defender missile to kill them. This means that they're more likely to hit your target if you're close enough.
Cruises will go much further and are much faster. They also have a fast explosion which means you have a better chance of doing full damage to smaller and faster-moving targets. They can be knocked out with a single defender missile so when ratting at range you'll probably only get half of them to your target before they're destroyed.
Fitting the launchers is a little different as well. I think the cruise missile launchers are easier to fit but don't quote me on that.
Basically: Smaller, faster targets or PvP = cruise. Bigger, slower targets or PvE torp.

Torpedo's are used on Stealth Bombers, cruise missles are not.

I have to disagree with this part somewhat. Cruise Missiles do make great long-range anti-support weapons, but Torpedoes make for excellent close range battleship killers. Obviously this is more for smaller-to-medium sized gangs (i.e. not 150km battleship fleets), but saying that Torps are only useful for PvE is just plain incorrect. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

The DPS advantage with Torpedoes is huge, yet those are limited by both range and explosion radius. You need either good speed or relevant missile velocity/flight duration bonuses to use them effectively, and almost definitely target painting to increase dmg dealed.
Ships known to be effective with torpedoes are the Raven/Golem hulls, the Typhoon and the new bombers - all generously bonused for them.
Cruise missiles excel in long range combat, hit smaller/fast moving targets way better (tho those were nerfed hard after QR patch) and their performance can be affected with additional skills, as unlike Rockets/HAM/Torpedo class, those belong in the Guided Missile category. So, after QR Cruise missiles are not that great of anti-support missiles by themselves, but with decent skills, some target painting and/or some rigs for expl. velocity and radius, things get much better.
In general Cruise work a tad better for all around PvE, just like HML do better than HAMs in PvE, but for close quorter PvP battles vs. similarly sized ships (BC/BS) etc, unguided torps and HAMs rule. Join the Biggest Greek Corp! www.Mythos-eve.com - Join Mythos Channel in game! |
