Download this to help you plan your skills.
Evemon also has a nice little section where you can view different loadouts for ships.
I'm not sure about the whole mining contract thing. sorry

Two mining lasers, two cargo expanders, survey scanner, and that's about that. Stick to 0.9 and 1.0 systems because you won't be tanking many rats in a Bantam.
Focus on training towards a Hulk, but once you can fly a Retriever and if you decide you still like mining then join a mining corp or run mining missions. Those are the closest things to mining contracts you'll find. The other mining that occurs is freelance. Those miners either refine what they get, or sell the ore straight into the market whole (whichever is most profitable for them in that region.)

Hi,
You have several options available to you.
If you want to insist on using a Bantam then you'll need to get skills to get access to better mining lasers, etc... If your going to get better skills then your better off getting Mining Barge skills. Yes I know that everyone does this and tells you this buts it is SOOOOO much better and easier to mine than in a Bantam.
If you realy want to stick to Mining lasers then your better off learning destroyer and getting acccess to a whole lot more lasers at once. Get a lot of cargo expanders to handle the ore and look at getting secure containers instead of jetcan mining, which will simply get you killed (trust me - pirates favourite method or luring ppl into making them red).
Or better an alt with an Industrial (industrial 1 is all that is required) to drag ore to the station.
Or better do a Google search Halada's Mining gguide and look at the figures and details and then you'll see the evidence that points at why you really should go higher...
Thats what the rest of us do...
I hope that helps you a little bit...

Halada's Mining Guide.
OK - the Bantam is fine for starting off. And that's what we're talking about here - just your first mining ship - not your last. The Bantam is the first step to getting a Hulk - nothing more. You couldn't ask for a better starter ship. It's extremely cheap and has a good lay out. The Navitas and Tormentor are also good ships. The only one that is actually really bad - is the Burst - because it has no drone.
Get a Hobgoblin. That's Drones I & Scout Drones I - take less than half an hour training time - and you can then go anywhere in High Sec. Start off in 1.0 and .9 - then venture into .8 to get used to killing the rats with your drone. If you get your drone skills up - you can go down to .4 and kill Rat Destroyers with your one drone. I have. Of course ... the rat destroyers down in .4 are NOT what you have to worry about .... so ... better to stay in High Sec - that is - unless you want to live dangerously(!!!)
The best named mining Lasers are the Cu Vapor ones. I've not tried to put Miner II's on a Bantam ... I assume they'll fit ...
Fit two - don't ... fit a gun ... fit two mining lasers - the drone is your weapon.
Then you want a shield booster to tank the rats and an after burner for getting around fast (which additionally makes it harder for the rats to kill you).
Get Two Expanded Cargo Holds - if you can afford them - get the Expanded Cargo Hold II's.
Don't put mining lasers on a destroyer. The mining lasers that are good won't fit and the ones that fit aren't the best, not to mention the fact that you get a benefit to Mining Frigates for Mining - and no benefit for mining with a destroyer. That and destroyers cost more.
Just stick with your Bantam until you have the money for a mining Cruiser (not to run missions in - to mine in) or a Mining Barge. If you get a Procuror you'll be on your way to getting a Retriever and won't have to bother with Cruisers at all - unless - you want to do Level II missions down the line. Destroyers are perfect for running Level I missions. Use them for that - not for mining. Get into a Retriver as soon as you can, then if you have loads of money when you have the skills for a Covetor - it's not that long to skill a Hulk. If you don't have loads of money when you are skilled up to use a Covetor - get one - and it will help you make the money - to not only use a Hulk - but to be able to replace it if you lose it. The Exhumers skill is 25 Million Isk and the Hulk is 96 Million Isk - so that's the kind of money we're talking about. Covetor's are like 17 million - and - will mine almost as well as a hulk.
You don't need a Ore Scanner for a mining frigate. The use for an Ore Scanner is to see how much Ore is left in the rock. That is because - on average - you will deplete the rock half way through the last cycle of the mining laser. So - you want to know - does this asteroid, which looks so big - really have a lot of ore left in it - or has some mining barge left only a little. Well - with small mining lasers (i.e. - NOT strip miners) - that really doesn't matter all that much. You're not going to be depleting all that many rocks with a small mining laser - and the cycles are only a minute long. It's not like you're in a Hulk with T2 Crystals fitted and churning through asteroids like they're butter.
But I'll tell you what - take off the shield booster - fit some ore scanner you get from loot and see if you care. Just put that shield booster back before you go into .8 or below. With a shield booster, and after burner and a drone - rats aren't a danger to you - they are money. Kill them with your drone - loot the wreck (the place you're going to get that ore scanner from) and then come back in your salvager destroyer (what destroyers are good for besides killing Level I rats) and salvage the wreck.

I was reading this thinking why doesn't someone mention Halada's Mining Guide.....then I read Toshiro's post. All I can say is take Toshiro's advice and read Halada's bible on mining.
By all means ask mining questions, but you're doing yourself a disservice if you haven't read that first. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

That's the old guide though. Here's the new one: The Complete Miner's Guide - Extended Edition Version 3.0
Definitely read it, read it again, and memorize it. Keep it nearby as you will refer to it for things in the future (like how to calculate yield, or use gang links on an Orca, or ...)
