Hello everyone! Ever since the Apocrypha expansion the small buttons on the overview to zoom and zoom out have been removed. Well this is not a big deal for us players who have full use of our mouse. However one of my pilots is a quadriplegic who plays the game using a sip and puff mouse with head tracking camera. He has two primary functions, left and right click. No wheel mouse support and he cannot hold the buttons down. When he had the zoom buttons on the overview he simply clicked them. This a big problem for him now as the camera position resets on him when going through gates. He has to call someone to fix it every time. Would someone be so kind as to possible offer some solutions for this?
I appreciate your time and efforts and my pilot does too!

I'll consider this as an open letter to CCP and I'm going to proactively look for more people to support this explicit request: CCP shall give absolute priority to this problem and shall be more careful in future decisions regarding the UI

We are very thankful for your support. EVE is one of the few games he is able to play comfortably and with ease and the lack of the zoom feature has caused him some stress.

If I remember correctly, those zoom buttons toggled the system and star maps. They have never zoomed the camera view in-space for as long as I have been playing.

Pressing them used to zoom in and out in small steps (was changed a while ago now)
To the OP: Can your mate find some way of using the crtl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z Hotkeys for Zoom? or remap the hotkeys to soemthing his interface can activate?

He has extreme difficulty with keyboard use. He currently uses the on screen keyboard but we all use vent as it's very hard for him to type to us.

simplest solution, settings toggle: don't reset camera after session change.

You can zoom in/out by holding both left & right mouse button simultaneously and then moving the mouse.

Isn't there a way to map say "scroll 5 up" to a button like F11 on the keyboard?
That way he could use 2 buttons on the keyboard to zoom, since the shortcuts on the Esc menu don't work anymore either.
Plus, if there are things that you don't like about Eve, click HERE because it will help. |

I shall sign this and add my name, i'm not someone with difficulties playing EVE but i can understand his problem, there was a similar issue when they added the blink colour for the active moduls, some people couldn't see it so they changed it, i see no reason why the same can't be done here, hell even just adding a toggle to remove said buttons would work fine so those that don't need it can remove it and people who like them and need them can have them back :)

I honestly don't know why the hell they would bother taking them out anyway. I used 'em to get in and out of the little solar system map thing. Camera zoom in/out functions could be nice on the arrow keys, also... |

What was the point in removing them anyway? They never got in the way of what I was looking at tbh.
But much much more importantly, I support this simply because of the OP's buddy. EVERYONE should be able to enjoy this game to the fullest and it wouldn't be fair to remove an item that would hurt someones ability to play correctly.

Totally agree. I'm still looking for the + and - buttons since the march 10th patch to get out of the map view. Put them back in, why were they removed initially anyway ??

I don't think that CCP can 'be more careful in the future' about things like that. They make the game for the mass and not for individuals.
This issue is already fixed: Let him push both buttons at the same time and he can zoom in/ out

its about lean UI. You can use the mouse wheel or press both button to zoom in / out. I am surprised about the amount of people complaining about nothing. That quadriplegic guy I understand but everyone else, well, use your brain and mouse

He cannot click both nor hold the mouse buttons down. I detailed what he can and cannot do in one of my posts. We know we can use the mouse for zooming. He however is not able to do so. I am not asking them cater the game for him or others in his situation. I am simply asking for a solution to the missing zoom buttons. They were there, they allowed him to play and now they are gone. Please help us get him back into the game. He has very few outlets in life and eve is one of the few games he is able to play with relative ease and hey enjoys it very much. This man used to play multiple clients at once. He is a proud supporter of the game we all know and love. Lets help him out.

I just thought about it some more and what about a "macro" assigned to a shortcut / exe in the quick launch bar...
Will be easy enough with Autohotkey to make.

Any chance that somebody who used to know TACS still plays and reads this? Iirc, his client was modified (allowed by CCP) for just this sort of situation and though he is no longer with us, perhaps the new client can be modified in a similar way to make it easier for your friend Pyr3x.

I don't but what I might be able to do, and I'm looking into now, is to write a program that he could run in the background.. it would intercept a key of his choice (hotkey) and then send the system a scroll wheel action. Will post back when I have more information. I would of course want to clear this with CCP as it could be considered a bot.. (by the way it injects the key presses or scroll wheel (which is technically just a key press))

This has not been working, for some reason the camera likes to get burried inside the ships model.

It's time to bring in the macros!
Get him a program called 'macro express 3', it has the functionality to create 'screen location' click triggers.
ie: he could move his mouse pointer over a predetermined portion of the screen and 'click' there to have a macro run to instantly left click in the center of his screen and scroll the mouse wheel a bit.
Jitter from the head tracking shouldn't easily interfere with it.
I know I'm finding the program indispensable for helping my mom with some of her work, as I have arthritis and cannot physically afford to have to keep twitching around for the repeated series of commands that go into indexing a book.

I've noticed a few Corps with member descriptions indicating that chat responses may be slow because they are quadriplegic, so EvE is obviously an accessible game for many people.
I am totally in support of this.

Can't you just buy him a better mouse? Surely there's more than one version of that device on the market. He can't be the only guy who has found dual mouseclicks lacking on a sip and puff mouse w/cam, or the want for some sort of mechanic to replace the scroll wheel. |

Not sure if this related but it seems like many times when I go through a stargate or undock my ship zooms in and at times zooms out. It gets annoying when I have to constantly reset camera so my ship doesn't fill my screen

I've flown with people permanently hospitalized, deaf people ą everyone should be able to play this game. The beauty of EVE is that one can almost live in the game. CCP should be and can be an enabler in this.

This is not a perfect solution by any means and I'm not even sure it would work but here goes....
Is it possible to have one of your other corp members hook up with him through a remote desktop program and take care of some of the tasks that he has difficulty with?
Might be worth looking into until CCP gets of it's duff and fixes this.

I agree, you should have an option to show or hide the zoom buttons, but they shouldn't be completely removed. |

I've met MANY eve players who have limited mobility/function in some way.
This guy isn't alone, if he's having trouble then there are 100+ others we're not hearing from.
This should be A1 top priority for the many eve users who would be stuck by this problem.

Wake-up CCP don't sit around doing nothing about it because of 1 players problem. This is serious and very bad in marketing if not fixed.

Yes, that is the obvious solution, and would be convenient for everyone. I have it easy, I can just use my scroll wheel to set the zoom level I want, but why should I have to set the zoom level after every jump.
Much easier and more convenient for everyone if EVE just remembers the user-set zoom level. Everybody wins. Except CCP, who apparently are vehemently opposed to the notion of a user friendly interface.
