I read somewhere once that CCP are annoyed with the amount of titans that alliances have. that they intended for there to be one or two per alliance. tops. not 50-odd like we are seeing now.
A great way to solve this in a way that has been mentioned time and time again would be to make capital ships REQUIRE mutliple capsules to operate. IE . Pilot, Gunners, navigation or whatever.
Perhaps 3-5 players for carriers and dreads. and 10 for titans. that would cut the numbers down a bit.

Your idea seems well founded, but let's be honest, it'd suck to hafta share a ship, and be hell to implemented. ______________________________________________

The problem for me is how 0.0 works, sovereignty, cyno jammers, POS's everywhere, massive powerblocks, ridiculously farmable moons.
If none of that changes it doesn't matter how you balance the most useful alliance ship in the game, whether you make it cost 5x more or whatever, they're still going to build hundreds eventually.
Because the established alliances, the really bigs ones, they cannot be moved and probably never will be as long as the game stays as it is.

I think it's a stupid idea and Vendetta Online recently announced that they've implemented this.
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

I approve of this idea for supercapitals, but not for regular carriers and dreads.
*edit* The reason I don't approve of this idea for regular capital ships is the following: Small corporations and alliances already have enough of a disadvantage when dealing with larger entities. If you needed 5 people with "capital skills" to fly a Thanatos, small corps like mine would never be able to field one.

there arnt like 50 titan per allianxce at the most it 20
and not eve a quarter of them use them for combat mainly for logistical uses like titan bridges or moving crap.
when you fly one then you can tell me how to make them better but until you do your point isnt very valid.
what with all the nerf everything attitude that has been going around.
how about you try and fix something more important like sov mechanics or something ¼_¼
if you buy eve in a box from my game store i will give you isk (GAME , parkgate rotherham)

Btw i don't think that it should be applied to all the capital ships, but supercapitals only (motherships and titans) and here is my idea:
1 - Change POS mechanism: let's have 2 pos type: industrial pos and command pos Industrial pos can be anchored to a moon and can perform jobs like moon-mining, reactions, constructions and so on. Command pos can be anchored to a planet and are the only ones that work to get soveregnty.
2 - A supercapital can only fit in a command pos (industrial pos get a smaller forcefield (or make it 'strenght based'). A command pos can allow 1 supercapital only inside his forcefield.
Better soveregnty system, less pos, less titans/motherships.

Of and of course the next best thing to try and fix it would be making a Titan HAVE to commit to a fight.
None of this warp in, DDD, warp out crap, flying around like a giant rubber space banana.
Give them a special ship penalty where it takes them X time to get ready to initiate warp again or something, for the simple fact that IT'S A ****ING HUGE SHIP.

another reason why capitals should have some extra "pod slots" is that a giant capital ship like that would not be equipped with just 3 big guns...or no guns at all in the case of carriers + MS. they would be bristling with small guns all over to attack things in every direction. (like battlestar gallactica!)
so even if they werent a necessity . it would still be nice if we could get a bit of extra firepower on the ships.

Honestly the titan whining is getting old. There's nothing wrong with them. They're powerful but they're not 'all that'.
Also the multi-pilot thing has been done, in Star Wars Galaxies. It was annoying.
