On that note, if I multiclient on a Quad core box running XP 32bit, will Eve automatically assign each process to it's own core or do I need to set affinity manually?
Cheers.

Your OS (XP) will do this, EVE can't do anything on its own. If you have a PC that can run Vista I recommend switching, or waiting for Win 7 instead, as their kernel and process assignment is superiour to that of XP.

as for naming a game that uses more than 2 cores. i believe the half life 2 physics engine is multithreaded, so in theory could use as many cores as it wants.

Currently I run: Intel Core i7 2.66 ghz EVGA X58 FTW Motherboard EVGA GTX 285 1GB (x2 Running SLI) 6gb OCZ 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM 3x 250gb Hard Drive (Running Raid 5) 2x Asus 25.5 Inch LCD Monitor (1920x1200 each)
Currently, I have not overclocked as I am working on putting a watercooling system in. Still need to buy the Radiators and the pumps. Already bought the waterblocks for the CPU, NB, and SB. Need the GPU waterblocks as well. While I could certianly easily overclock to 3.2 to 3.6 on air, I'll overclock later on water. Will probably push the CPU to atleast 3.6ghz (I could go up to 4.0-4.2 pretty easily with this cpu from what I've read, but I don't see a need to go that extreme).
Anyways, as for how it runs EVE in it's overclocked state. I can pretty easily run 5 EVE clients with absolutely no lag. I run at Interval One (I think thats what it is) which limits the clients to the refresh rate of 60 fps. And all 5 clients will run at 59-60 fps. And my CPU usage stays under 30% I think. Will have to check to be sure. Runs great.
I have OCed my i7 920 to 4.2GHz with Prime95 stable for 1 week on air, very easy to do and using cheaper componenets than yours, dont fear cranking dat ***** up !

I just switched my EVE client from a Phenom X3/nVidia 8800GTX/4Gb Windows PC to a 2009 Core Duo Mac mini with nVidia 9400 and 4Gb, and get the same frame rate as before. You do not need a high powered computer to play EVE, and the graphics are definitely not the performance bottleneck. Server latency rules all.

Fixed it for you. 32-bit Linux and Mac OS/X can both make use of all 4Gb.

How is that? I thought the 4gb limitation was a limit of 32-bit not the OS
2^32 is it? = 4.2gb?

Minus the video memory, 512mb usually, more or less depending on your card, and you get 3.7gb.

thanks for the info. Also, even if a particular app use <= 2 cores, wouldn't a quad core machine then have 2 avail for, i don't know, THE OS and anything running in the background?
If the OP is not planning on buying a new machine in 3 years, he should probably non min-spec it in any event.

How is that?
Physical Address Extension
Quote: However, desktop versions of Windows (Windows XP, Windows Vista) limit physical address space to 4 GB for driver compatibility reasons.
So go spend a couple thousand on a license for W2K3 Enterprise or Datacenter, and you're all set.
