This week, our corp-mate and FW standout Un'cas, passed away at the age of 52. Although I knew him for only the last 5 months I can say he was a wonderful person to fly with and even better to talk to. His record in Factional Warfare and EVE in general over the past years speaks for itself:
http://eve-kill.net/?a=pilot_detail&plt_id=21554
Rumor is that there may be a few new stars added to the FW areas in the Inferno expansion. If that is the case, it would be most wonderful if one of the new bright stars in the EVE heavens bore his name.
Just an idea. |

This has to do with inferno FW expansion that is on test server. I thought it would be appropriate here. Feel free to move if it is the wrong place. |

Hi,
My condolences go out to Un'cas' friends and family - it is a great thing to see that someone has touched the lives of so many in a meaningful way. As to your request, I am afraid that there are no new systems being created with the Inferno expansion, but perhaps you could anchor a POS named for him in his favourite system? Sorry, but for us I believe that would be a too ethereal and temporary homage. Un'cas game mates are looking for a more permanent ingame tribute in deference to the person John, and his character Un'cas.
If a system can not be named after him, renaming an already existing Gallente Militia FDU Level V or Level IV security mission agent would indeed be a great deal for all his ingame friends, perhaps even for his RL family and friends.
And THAT would be adding an amazing bright grain to the sandbox.
Even making the RL news for its breakthough homage.

The fact that you guys are all looking to remember this person Uncas in a special way is great and all but it should never be done in a permanent way in game do to it being something that would then be a question of "well they did it for him so why not my friend". This would be the same even if it was for someone more well known by the EVE population in general instead of just your small group. I'm sure plenty of people knew this guy but not every one.
If you guys want to remember him in game then your just going to have to settle for something thats not permanent like the suggested POS.
Then I can come along with some friends and try to blow it up. |

I was never involved with FW til Inferno, but I agree. a POS is not enough. Renaming an agent after him would be... touching to say the least My moncole doubles as a cigarette lighter, a flashlight, a laser and x-ray goggles. If you haven't noticed yet, I'm in love with Punkturis. -á-á-á

Here is an idea, CCP does have the memorial statue objects. Now I am not a faction warfare person, but for us nullsec people, we have main and regular entry systems that get used. Is it possible to place up a memorial at the main entry gate to his faction's pvp area? Could be more do-able I would think. |

Couldn't a graveyard be created for players of Eve that have passed away in real life? Have it like a readable beacon that could somehow be added to? Eve promotes the creation of corporations and alliances and behind everyone of them is a real person, having them pass away is a rarity in itself but one to be remembered none the less. |

It won't be ethereal or temporary if your feelings are not ethereal and temporary. If you can't be arsed to supply the POS, or to defend it when it's inevitably attacked, then it will go away, just as your sympathies did; if you do maintain it, and do rouse up "Un'cas Memorial Defense Ops" from time-to-time, replete with telling new people what a great guy he was and telling them what you'll do to them if they ignore your call to arms, then it will be a far better memorial than a system name.
After all, if your sympathies die, and you never speak of him a month from now, then nobody's going to even know that the system/agent/whatever is named after someone, nor offer more than a grunt were they told that it was named after somebody they don't know or have any reason to care about.
The main problem with the POS suggestion is that a POS is A) ugly, and B) utilitarian. Starbases are tools, they're to be used for something. If you did put a POS up, you would faced with the question of, should you anchor anything useful around it? Would it be better or worse of a memorial for being 'useless' vs. 'irreverent'?
I suggest you suggest that CCP add anchorable memorials to the game. Something that must be maintained; as giant secure containers disappear if unattended for 30 days, your memorial should disappear after a time if nobody visits it and clicks on it to view the memorial text. You should put real thought into this -- for instance, you might not like it if someone puts up an insulting counter-memorial next to yours. |

How about changing a planet name in a system he frequented? I mean most have system name+ I-XXII, but some systems have named planets so why not change a generic name to a proper on one world? It would both honor some one and help to flesh out the universe....I mean here in the Sol system we have named all the planets in the roman tradition not Sol-I through Sol-VIII. Also were naming other planets in the milky way after other and more personal things. We have also set human president with using a genaric name("star name"+"roman numaral") then changing it later once its confermed to be there.

A POS would obviously be a way to pay homage, however I think that those of us in FW who fought with and against Un'cas want something that feels more a part of a game, something that can't be destroyed. I just hope that down the line, if someone more 'important' in EVE passes away CCP remembers there response to this circumstance. Join the war, Join the4

There's precedents set for this kind of thing:
1. There is a Concord agent named "Jeremy Tacs" who is named after a player who died. I don't know the details of who they were, only that the agent was named after them.
2. CCP did not name anything similar when one of their own staff members, CCP Taera , died suddenly.
3. A player that died, their alliancemates organised a big send off, and told the ingame news service about it, which resulted in a news article prior to the event. Persons turned up to interfere and goof around, some getting shot for their actions.
I don't know why CCP named that agent, or why they did not do anything similar for one of their own staff, but that's what's happened in the past. Long time ago too, relatively speaking. 2008 and before.
Organising an event, and letting the ingame news service know, well in advance of the event, so there's an ingame news article that will be a permanent thing to inform people, is likely to be the only thing that most people can do, to commemorate a person. |

I think it might be something that CCP could think about adding to Incarna... something along the lines of what they have in Clear Skies 3, where there is a Memorial Garden and a Hologram of the Character.
Perhaps for now a Giant Secure Can or POS is going to have to be enough to honour your lost comrad, but I would strongly urge CCP to think about a small token such-as a Memorial Garden on Stations that people could petition to add those eve players who have been lost in real-life.
It doesn't change anything in the universe, and is a form of perminant mark that both EVE and DUST players would be able to pay their respects at. Would make a nice reminder that regardless of what happens in real-life, in EVE we will forever be immortalised capsuleers.
In any case... o7 Fly Safe Un'cas |

I am sorry, but that is way too expensive for CCP, unless you can entice several capsuleers to donate thousands of dollars for the additional work requested. |

Actually thinking about it, that is a perfect business idea for CCP!
They should introduce a microtransaction systen where those with some disposable cash can pay CCP to have some kind of memorial thingy erected to either commemorate your time in EVE or express condolences for the unfortunates.
I assume it would cost hundreds of dollars per request with additional hundreds for additional features.
Once again, nothing is for free. What we are asking here on this posting, is just way too much for CCP employees to handle, except, of course, the Star thingy. |
