Originally by: Orestes I agree that agent missions are not the ideal solution, but it is the best intermediate one.
In the future, there could be better ways to research, and I like the ideas in this thread.
The thing you need to consider, thoguh, is that new tech needs to have a limited availability, so that not everyone gets the Mega Pulse Laser III Bpo whenever they want.
Keep the ideas and discussion coming, this thread is a good read.
Yes we all know, ccp said 10 months ago agent wont be the only way to get tech2...... 8 months ago r&d agents hit tq, and we're still waiting for ccp to even release PLANS for an other way...........
Maybe tech3 will be something different, but tech2 will deffo be agents only. |

Edited by: Selim on 12/09/2004 16:45:50 I also think implants shouldnt come from agents... they should come from research, too.
I still think tech 2 needs to be rare and hard to get ahold of but slowly becoming more common and easier to get, though.

Signed! 8 months of R&D and BPO lottery did prove that was terribly wrong idea.
No anymore Soon (TM) or similar bull****. This game is flat sided have no relief for people who wants science. As I'd state before EVE have not science specialist but have gambling sciencers.
Stop that lottery madness and turn science in EVE into something where people need to have use brain.

agreed - people dedicated to being scientists should have some kind of benefit! Capitalization is the difference between "I had to help my uncle Jack off a horse.." and "I had to help my uncle jack off a horse.." |

Quote: A career in science should work along the same lines as a career in combat where you train skills to affect your ability to deal damage or to aid others. Currently scientists train skills so that they can sit down with a nice cup of tea, watch some tv, and hope that one day a BPO falls out of the sky and lands square in their lap. Time for a fix methinks
That's exactly how I feel about it. Almost every other skill in the game is active, while science skills are passive. It takes the fun out of being a scientist. I don't know the solution but I know the problem and I'd like to see CCP move this issue a lot higher up on the priority list. They should start fleshing something out right after Shiva.

I dont think things are gonna change in the next couple of months. When sheeva arrives there 's gonna be so much new stuff/bugs they just wont have the time to fix r&d. I just hope they'll release t2 bpos on the market before 2007, but since there are still some t1 that are missing after 1.5 years... p.s. Ruiz, your sig rulez

Why would a huge NPC corporation give away a blueprint to someone who does some odd jobs for them, without making any money for themselves? It makes no sense!! Let's have BPC drops, especially for highly sought after items like the new ships (at least until you design a proper science system).

The current system is poor. One would like to know as to how many players who have recieved the tech 2 bpos could actually build the item in question.
Just a thought but give the builders something other than a RND((cat in hells chance+ catching a fly with chopsticks)/no of flying pigs)

Signed I have 3.5M skill points in science skills. What has that gotten me? Lots of headache and isk down the drain from missions. 3 crappy tech2 bps. 5 more smack-talking agents who can't be podded. What a career. The almost complete lack of a point to my chosen career, lab slot bugs (ejecting my bps right as bills were due, causing me to lose the slot), and the low availability of lab slots drove me from this game for 2 months. When I started playing this game, I wanted to be a scientist. Then I saw how many science activities didn't work, like reverse engineering. I remeber telling several newbs in the newb corp to not even bother with a science career, cause it just wasn't going anywhere. Then Castor and the lotto came out. I was excited, because it was at least an improvement. I hated the lotto idea, but I thought it wouldn't be too bad. Then I realized that most of the pre-reqs for starting research projects were skills that everyone and their dog would train, because they are important for ship fitting. And guess what, everyone and their dog has. And it looks like it's mostly the dogs getting BPs. I want a system where I actually DO something as a scientist, not just play courier to some agent with an attitude. I want to design starships, and sell them at a premium, because they are different from the standard ship. I want to use lab slots to reverse engineer items, find ways to make incremental improvements on them, and produce a BP. Perhaps squeeze an extra 10m/s out of an Ares. Slap a little more armor on a scorpion. Add a skill-level bonus to a ship. Trade a extra low slot for a high slot and a medium. ANYTHING. I'd like to have to track down research items, like rdbs, by locating agents and running some missions or trading in research points. I'd like to have to locate (or pay someone else to locate) rare ores that have little use outside of my project. I'd like to buy or find loot drops simply to reverse engineer them to learn why they are better. I'd like to have some way of comparing different bps to learn more about how the item works and what changes make them better. I'd like to use that data to create a new variant. I'd like to control what I am trying to create, rather than simply pick a field and hope a decent BP drops for it. I'd like to see the introduction of new tech levels controlled by "pure" research. I'd like to have projects running where I am not actually working on producing an item, but in advancing a research field. I'd like my payoff for that to be in fame (news items talking about advancements I've made in, say, high-energy physics), and perhaps a bit of an advantage in producing the next tech level. And until a certain amount of advancements are made in pure research, there's no tech 3. To keep things going, CCP would probably need to make sure NPC corps produce some at a steady rate. You might even have NPC factions gives subsidies to sucessful researchers. Not only does the lotto suck, there's very little game-play involved, and no creativity at all. Your 150mm Railgun II perfectly strikes Serpentis Drug Baron, wrecking for 192.8 damage. |
