For this ammount of players the servers are quite stable and looking at other companies they do *** about it if summin goes wront. CCP tries to fix the entire stuff immidiately (or however u spell this :D ) and don't wait till next downtime. And fixing a cluser this size is summin different as fixing a normal PC. As long as the Server doesn'T crash reguarly I'm alright with this.
<sarcastic mode> I hope you didn't install SP2 for Windows XP on the Servers </sarcastic mode>

comparing SOE's service to CCP's is like comparing the taste of an orange to that of an apple.
personally, i could care less how SOE's service is. i'm not an SOE customer. i ONLY care about CCP's service and support. CCP's service problems should not be compared to anyone else's.
i'm not bashing CCP at all. i'm sure they'll have it all put back together as SOON AS POSSIBLE. they always do. but, i am sick of people saying not to express their opinions about [something bad] simply because [something is worse]...
there is a fine, but dissasterous line between a fart and a shart. i suggest you make sure which side you want to be on... |

Your numbers are probably quite off, they said they even have 7 administrators working on supporting the cluster (full time and par time) which btw is 40 IBM machines and an extremely expensive fibre channel storage. And 10K EUR for bandwith and hosting, you gotta be kidding .
I wouldn't be suprised if their monthly bills and wages run 300-500K EUR/month.

rackspace is cheap compared to bandwidth, id be interested to see the bandwith graphs for ccp for a month or 2, an MRTG feed would be sweet

Originally by: 3of5 surely ccp make enough money out of this game to have a backup server, think about it you got 11k+ clients all paying about 14.95 euros a month so thats like 164450+ euros a month, so theres big profit involved, so how about shelling out for a backup server
This cant be done, eve is a game with only one server, so it cant be sharded, and a copy of the server exactly cant be created either, for two reasons. if somethings wrong with the server, then the equiptment running it would not work properly, right? so your saying spend another 6 mounths and hundres of thousands of dollars to create another server capable of the standards we play on TQ, and hold maybe 5k players? not gonna work, oh another reason too, for the backup server to be up to date...never could happen. as it is right now it takes nullTWO DAYS to backup the chacters, stations, assets, and all eve info from TQ to chaos. if u had a backup server it would take 2 days once the main went down to load data, then u play for an hour, and expect what you did to be saved for TQ when it comes back up? ok well theres another 2 days of copying. this could be done if u had maybe a computer with maybe 5 terabytes of processing speed.

what u mad? its not one server, its a cluster. It would be pretty obvious to me at least that any raid array would have built in integrity checking so if one disk failed the raid array could still be repaired. DB backups are just in essence a text file of the database which could then be fed backinto a SQL server if the worst ever happened.

Agreed. Stability is quite well with eve online. Recently I made some utterly annoying experiences regarding server crashes: I am playing Lineage 2 for some months now. And since the "Chronicle 1" update on the end of June all of their servers crash several times a day. One can viev the server history on: http://www.glop.org/lineage2/history.html Man, THAT is annoying.
And moreover: their customer support as well as their information policy are even worse than the entire community. If only the game wouldn't be that nice ...
Here there is even a developer blog available. Unthinkable with NCSoft (Lineage2).

CCP are getting better and i think EVE has come a long way, The game is getting more stable and i think when something like this does happen we have to realise that some things are just out of CCP's control
I remember logging on when 5k users where online and thinking if i should stay in a station coz of the lag
now we hitting 11k users and the game is pretty stable

ermm... read "revenue" mate, not profit. Don't know much about business I guess?
Complete guesses:
20 Developers & 5000 euro/month 3 Managers @ 7500 euro/month Office space @ 15000 euro/month Network Links & Hosting Space (around 80U) @ 10000 euro/month
Comes to around 147500 euro/month
Now do we buy another 2 developers per month and improve the game, or do we buy another couple of servers, which we can't really use as a cluster yet because we can't match the number of existing nodes that need to be made redundant.
Ever saw a pricequote on 100 mbit of dedicated bandweith? Let me tell you its alot more then you can imagen and somehow i don't think 100mbit cuts it for TQ...
Originally by: cashman It's time for Eris to get a clue. CCP should make a statement about this.
It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

News Announcement post mortem on cluster outage.
When such outages occur, we're more worried about getting the cluster up than informing exactly what is wrong. We use the MOTD for the information that we are able to give.
The MOTD is the little window in the login client, and is the best place to deliver to all subscribers information. It'll get better support for more text and stuff since we are trying to use it more and more. _____________________________ I say hey sky, s'other say I won say, I pray to J I get the same ol' same ol. |

Great news and i agree its the best way to provide people with the information they want. It'll be great once this can hold a bit more info and stuff. Lets hope it stops the forums from flooding with 'why is server down?' topics...
