Edited by: GM Grimmi on 10/09/2004 17:34:31 Dear players,
The server is currently down due to a hardware failure. The server guys are working on the problem and the ETA for a fix in one hour. The server will be restarted soon with some limited capacity so there will most likely be a limit on the number of users for a while. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience in this matter.
Thanks,
EVE Online team.

Message on the client says it will be capped at 65% capacity...
Sixty-five per cent of what figure, please?

Aye, was also wondering that :)
Hopefully it will be high enough for most, if not all those effected to get themselves sorted out after this mess :p

Ok **** happens , things break.....
but it really is about time ccp got theyre act together about infomring people whats going on... it's taken me an hour to get here and find this , no doubt eve has been down longer than that.

Edited by: Idema NiteDragon on 10/09/2004 18:12:10 Must admit some information on whats going on would be brilliant, whenever ANYTHING goes wrong, you have to guess whether its eve or a local error... and then of course the website tends to die aswell - so you end up sitting in 'Mushroom mode'...
Its scary this actually rates as one of the better downtimes, because there's the vaguest of clues of what the hecks going on ! - btw Can CCP define 'shortly' because your version of it seems to differ somewhat from mine :p

Ebedar, I heard somewhere tha maxuser limit on tq was over 20k, but tbh they could set it to 9k and there wouldnt be a problem today.
I for one wish that when this happened, someone would: a) go on #eve-chaos and tell everyone/put it in the subject header b) pop a message on the front page (maybe a little server status thingy like on eve-i.com?) c) donate some isk to the eve-i.com hosts, as they always get hammered with traffic when the server goes down... |

surely ccp make enough money out of this game to have a backup server, think about it you got 11k+ clients all paying about 14.95 euros a month so thats like 164450+ euros a month, so theres big profit involved, so how about shelling out for a backup server

Guys just chill, The fact CCP has replied the SAME day about the servers being down is VERY good, alot of you complaining should go play other games and then you will realise most companys dont give a **** about the community, Ive come from playing Novalogic games and compared to CCP, CCP are 100 times better than alot of other gaming companys for getting replys, So everyone just chill out and wait and stop whinning because its not gonna make things get fixed quicker, Just be greatfull that CCP made this sticky telling people because alot of other companys WONT full stop.

C'mon even SOE manage to keep the community informed, and their Customer Service is an international joke.
I like CCP, but they do need to polish this side of their system a bit, as frankly the customer does need to be informed when a service is interrupted. |

Er they have only just upgraded the whole cluster.
The client loading up has nothing to do with the server. Perhaps if it takes too long you may want to upgrade your pc :)

Doesn't CCP have any redundant hardware? This kind of thing absolutely should NOT happen. I keep seeing CCP reps referring to 'the server', I certainly hope that CCP doesn't have just one server trying to handle this kind of load.
Time for upgrades...

Sods law indeed. First time i've had in one month to actually play, rather than skill manage: and the server dies! lol!
Also had the countdown - apparently two people got as far as logging in, and then it went back to 'proxy disconnected'.
Oh well, looks like i'll be doing MORE website coding tonight.

A new simultaneous player record was set tonight, Sunday, when 10.744 players were on at the same time. This beats the old record by more than 500 players! The EVE game servers ran without any problems during this heavy load, so the recent hardware upgrades and performance tuning is paying off.

Redundant hardware is always a subject to failure...
It should not happen. But it happens, even with e.g. large web hosting companies.
And of course they got a cluster, not a single server...a sql server cluster and something about 30 or so "sol servers" (=application server) if I remember correctly...

Its actually a cluster, not just one server.
In a cluster arrangement normally they load share amd if part of the cluster fails the rest kick in to take the strain.
That would be their redundancy.
However looks like something serious prevented it from working.

Complete guesses:
20 Developers & 5000 euro/month 3 Managers @ 7500 euro/month Office space @ 15000 euro/month Network Links & Hosting Space (around 80U) @ 10000 euro/month
Comes to around 147500 euro/month
Now do we buy another 2 developers per month and improve the game, or do we buy another couple of servers, which we can't really use as a cluster yet because we can't match the number of existing nodes that need to be made redundant.

For this ammount of players the servers are quite stable and looking at other companies they do *** about it if summin goes wront. CCP tries to fix the entire stuff immidiately (or however u spell this :D ) and don't wait till next downtime. And fixing a cluser this size is summin different as fixing a normal PC. As long as the Server doesn'T crash reguarly I'm alright with this.
<sarcastic mode> I hope you didn't install SP2 for Windows XP on the Servers </sarcastic mode>

<sarcastic mode> I hope you didn't install SP2 for Windows XP on the Servers </sarcastic mode>

comparing SOE's service to CCP's is like comparing the taste of an orange to that of an apple.
personally, i could care less how SOE's service is. i'm not an SOE customer. i ONLY care about CCP's service and support. CCP's service problems should not be compared to anyone else's.
i'm not bashing CCP at all. i'm sure they'll have it all put back together as SOON AS POSSIBLE. they always do. but, i am sick of people saying not to express their opinions about [something bad] simply because [something is worse]...
there is a fine, but dissasterous line between a fart and a shart. i suggest you make sure which side you want to be on... |

Your numbers are probably quite off, they said they even have 7 administrators working on supporting the cluster (full time and par time) which btw is 40 IBM machines and an extremely expensive fibre channel storage. And 10K EUR for bandwith and hosting, you gotta be kidding .
I wouldn't be suprised if their monthly bills and wages run 300-500K EUR/month.

rackspace is cheap compared to bandwidth, id be interested to see the bandwith graphs for ccp for a month or 2, an MRTG feed would be sweet

This cant be done, eve is a game with only one server, so it cant be sharded, and a copy of the server exactly cant be created either, for two reasons. if somethings wrong with the server, then the equiptment running it would not work properly, right? so your saying spend another 6 mounths and hundres of thousands of dollars to create another server capable of the standards we play on TQ, and hold maybe 5k players? not gonna work, oh another reason too, for the backup server to be up to date...never could happen. as it is right now it takes nullTWO DAYS to backup the chacters, stations, assets, and all eve info from TQ to chaos. if u had a backup server it would take 2 days once the main went down to load data, then u play for an hour, and expect what you did to be saved for TQ when it comes back up? ok well theres another 2 days of copying. this could be done if u had maybe a computer with maybe 5 terabytes of processing speed.

what u mad? its not one server, its a cluster. It would be pretty obvious to me at least that any raid array would have built in integrity checking so if one disk failed the raid array could still be repaired. DB backups are just in essence a text file of the database which could then be fed backinto a SQL server if the worst ever happened.

Agreed. Stability is quite well with eve online. Recently I made some utterly annoying experiences regarding server crashes: I am playing Lineage 2 for some months now. And since the "Chronicle 1" update on the end of June all of their servers crash several times a day. One can viev the server history on: http://www.glop.org/lineage2/history.html Man, THAT is annoying.
And moreover: their customer support as well as their information policy are even worse than the entire community. If only the game wouldn't be that nice ...
Here there is even a developer blog available. Unthinkable with NCSoft (Lineage2).

CCP are getting better and i think EVE has come a long way, The game is getting more stable and i think when something like this does happen we have to realise that some things are just out of CCP's control
I remember logging on when 5k users where online and thinking if i should stay in a station coz of the lag
now we hitting 11k users and the game is pretty stable

ermm... read "revenue" mate, not profit. Don't know much about business I guess?
Complete guesses:
20 Developers & 5000 euro/month 3 Managers @ 7500 euro/month Office space @ 15000 euro/month Network Links & Hosting Space (around 80U) @ 10000 euro/month
Comes to around 147500 euro/month
Now do we buy another 2 developers per month and improve the game, or do we buy another couple of servers, which we can't really use as a cluster yet because we can't match the number of existing nodes that need to be made redundant.
Ever saw a pricequote on 100 mbit of dedicated bandweith? Let me tell you its alot more then you can imagen and somehow i don't think 100mbit cuts it for TQ...
Originally by: cashman It's time for Eris to get a clue. CCP should make a statement about this.
It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

News Announcement post mortem on cluster outage.
When such outages occur, we're more worried about getting the cluster up than informing exactly what is wrong. We use the MOTD for the information that we are able to give.
The MOTD is the little window in the login client, and is the best place to deliver to all subscribers information. It'll get better support for more text and stuff since we are trying to use it more and more. _____________________________ I say hey sky, s'other say I won say, I pray to J I get the same ol' same ol. |

Great news and i agree its the best way to provide people with the information they want. It'll be great once this can hold a bit more info and stuff. Lets hope it stops the forums from flooding with 'why is server down?' topics...
