Hi there,
I've been playing Eve now for a few weeks (1.5m SP), my current ship is a Drake and i've been doing L3 missions easily.
I've tried a few L4's, and it appears that my ships DPS is quite low - killing BSs doesnt seem possible atm (though I am only using XR-3200's). I have looked at the skill list to get T2 Heavy Missile Launchers, and am wondering if that is the best route, or if I should use the time to instead start picking up Battleship skills.
So....
Browsing the Raven's "Recommended" certificates for skills, EveMon has come up with:
Missile Launcher Operation V Cruise Missiles I Cruise Missiles II Energy Systems Operation II Energy Systems Operation III Energy Systems Operation IV Energy Systems Operation V Energy Management I Energy Management II Energy Management III Energy Management IV Energy Grid Upgrades III Energy Grid Upgrades IV Engineering V Electronics IV Electronics V Electronics Upgrades I Electronics Upgrades II Electronics Upgrades III Electronics Upgrades IV Electronics Upgrades V Long Range Targeting I Long Range Targeting II Long Range Targeting III Long Range Targeting IV Targeting III Targeting IV Targeting V Multitasking I Signature Analysis I Signature Analysis II Signature Analysis III Signature Analysis IV Navigation IV Warp Drive Operation I Warp Drive Operation II Warp Drive Operation III Evasive Maneuvering I Evasive Maneuvering II Evasive Maneuvering III Mechanic IV Hull Upgrades IV Shield Management IV Shield Operation V Shield Compensation I Shield Compensation II Shield Compensation III Caldari Cruiser IV Caldari Battleship I Caldari Battleship II
Which is some 60d16h of training.
Are any of these not really needed, or are nice-to-haves?
At first glance the targetting skills seem good candidates to move down out of the way.
I don't want to train Battleships up, buy myself a Raven, then get it blown up because I dont have the skills to use it effectively!

If you want to to L4 missions, you need a battleship with cruise or torps. You can do them in a drake but you'll be there for AGES while you kill everything.
Don't bother with Mechanic, Hull Upgrades, Electronics Upgrades V or Targeting V + Multitasking.
Get into the Raven, get BS 4, Cruise Missiles 4 and whatever support skills to 4 or 5. Don't forget the missile support skills as well as the others.

Get them at least to IV.
Originally by: Adehlea Signature Analysis IV
Anf this one to 5.
Originally by: Adehlea Electronics Upgrades V
Lvl 1 will be enough.
Quote: Multitasking I
Raven can lock 7 targets, so targeting 5 is enough, but with 6 targets and targeting 4 you'll be OK.
Quote: Mechanic IV Hull Upgrades IV
Not really.

You must have Missile Launcher Operation at V just to be able to learn the battleship missile skills. I'd really recommend everyone gets Electronics and Engineering to V. For a Raven, I'd definitely recommend Drones and Scout Drone Operation to V so you can use T2 drones. Aside from that, I'd say Cruise Missiles and every missile support skill to IV, all capacitor, shield, energy grid, and drone support skill to IV, Weapon Upgrades to at least IV, all navigation skills to IV, and Caldari Battleship to IV. Spaceship Command should either be IV or V. Targeting should be V, Long Range Targeting to 3-4. Also get Jury Rigging to III so you can learn your other rig skills. You might want to train Electronic Warfare to IV so you can learn Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing (each level adds 3km to drone control range too) but that's up to you. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Edited by: Vyllana on 01/06/2009 22:01:07 Caldari Battleship 2 (to be able to sit in it) Cruise Missiles 1 (to fit cruise missile launchers) Shield Operation 1 (to fit a large shield booster) Weapon Upgrades 1 (to fit BCUs) Tactical Shield Manipulation 1 (to fit hardeners) Energy Grid Upgrades 2 (to fit PDUs/cap rechargers) Jury Rigging 1 (to fit cap control circuits) Shield Management 1 (to fit a shield boost amp) Science 4 (to fit a tractor beam)
Then some semi-decent cap skills (a smattering of 3s and 4s will do) so you can run the booster for a few minutes and some missile support skills and you're good to go. Same with some shield skills and drone skills. You can train these up after you've hopped into the raven and started working on missions, to see what you are lacking in most.

I couldnt wait to try and solo lvl 4's.I'd do 3 or 4 and lose a Raven , then 3 or 4 more , lose another Raven. It got VERY frustrating . I noticed a huge difference when i got my shield comps to lvl 4 , EM , Explosive , Kinetic, Thermal . Raven is the best mission ship (imo) and your goal is to get a Navy Raven for missioning. My short list of reccomendations is : Lots of engineering . BS 4 at the least . Cruise 4 and as many missile support skills as possible . Good medium drone skills .Drone interfacing is the best skill in the catagory , but all are important. Evasive maneuvering is the skill that helps you turn and burn ,for quick escapes.
Drake is an awsome ship , but the skill paths are quite different .You should decide which path you want , and not get too much time split up on BC skills , if you really want BS skills.

If you actually use mods where shield comps are effective, then your fit is really fubar.
Anyway, I fly lvl 4s no problem with pretty minimal skills.

I've flown L4s with both Drake and Raven, and it's my experience that the Drake is by a good margin the easier of the two to use for such missions.
Relative to the Drake, the Raven is a cap-sucking fiend that maneuvers like a glacier. Although it does kill the high-end battleships faster, it kills everything else more slowly, so the kill speed is a wash.
Skillwise, you can skillfully and effectively fly a Drake with a fraction of the SP needed to fly a Raven. At 1.5m SP, you're nowhere even close to being able to fly a Raven effectively. I've got over 7m SP and I still don't fly a Raven, as it's just not worth the extra risk and expense and I rip my hair out waiting for it to go from point A to point B.

Edited by: Annieka on 12/06/2009 09:16:30 Edited by: Annieka on 12/06/2009 09:07:53 To be effective and comfortable in a Raven you should have ...
Drones 5 Drone Interfacing 5 Scout Drone Op. 5 Gallente Drone Spec. 4
Electronics 5 Targeting 3 Signature Analysis 5 Long Range Targetting 5
Energy Grid Upgrades 5 Energy Management 5 Energy Systems Op. 5 Engineering 5 Shield Compensation 5 Shield Management 5 Shield Operation 5 (don't need 5 but you should have it from your Drake anyway) Tactical Shield Manipulation 4
Weapon Upgrades 5
Cruise Missiles 5 Guided Missile Precision 5 Missile Bombardment 4 Missile Launcher Op 5 Missile Projection 5 Rapid Launch 5 Target Navigation Prediction 4 Warhead Upgrades 5
Navigation 5 Evasive Maneuvering 5
Science 5 Thermodynamics 4
Caldari Battleship 5
At 1.5kk sp you're months and months away from a Raven, you should stay in your Drake and train all the reinforcement skills to 4 and focus primarily on the engineering skills (shields first and then cap skills) and the "essentials" (mechanic, engineering, electronics, hull upgrades, navigation). A raven at anything lower than 8 million SP is going to be grossly ineffective and won't be able to perma-boost or even break the tank on a lot of battleship-sized rats.
Allthough to be honest at 1.5 million sp I'd say you have some learning skills to train if you're already in a Battlecruiser. |

At least they aren't obviously lying... take a look at the prereqs for Evasive Manuevering and tell me what level your navigation was again. |
