So, I'm a newbie that manages to play between his EE classes. I just got to lvl 3 security missions and am flying a drake w/ tech I heavy launchers (tech ii in a few days), 2.8 mil skills.
So based on what seemed like expert advice from some well-intentioned pros in another thread I head towards lower sec space. When looking through lvl 3 agents in agent finder I find one in 0.4 space 8 jumps away and decide to go for it. (0.4 being the lowest sec on the journey). What better way to get my feat wet? After all, "the game doesn't even start till nul sec" and "all the real money is made out there".
I get gate-camped and murdered. Yes yes I'm a noob if I had only used the stratospheric quantum nanite deflector I could of defeated the warp blah blah. I get it. I'm trying to learn though. I land and warp immediately after the gate, and some guy in a hurricane scrambles me and blows me out of the sky (to be fair, I almost got him), then kills my pod.
At this point, that was a substantial amount of all the ISK I've made thus far, and it blows me away that a game can be built to allow this level of cheapness. It's one thing if I'm in 0.0 and cruising for PVP, it's another to design systems with the ultimate choke point to end all choke points and then allow players to camp it. I get it, sandbox, virtual world virtual crime, and I'll likely get nothing more than "quit yer bchin" out of this forum. But this is EXACTLY why so many people have no desire to enter low sec and nul sec, because cheap tactics will vaporize your months of work.
Now I'm determined, I'm going to claw my way back up, find that guy, and kick his ass. Then I'm gonna kick his dog. But most people aren't that way. Many just quit and move on to something better. I love EVE as a game and as a concept and want it to succeed, but if we ever want to hit 500k, or 1+ mil people you've got to have better options/mechanics for newbies.
Since this is Q&A:
-How could I have beat that warp scramble? I hit warp THE second the menu populated on spawn.

You made a very common mistake.
Don't take expensive ships into low-sec when you're first learning. You will lose your first PvP battles, and you will pay for those losses with your hard-earned ISK if you're flying an expensive ship. If you just lose a Rifter and have a fully upgraded clone, it won't hurt all that badly. Just accept the fact that you're going to die a few - or more than a few - ti |

You ARE going to get a lot of "don't go to low/null" or "don't fly what you can't afford to replace" comments, but to specifically address this point, there's really not much you can do.
Oh, sure, you could fit warp core stabilizers into your low slots so that you can travel more easily. Effectively, each WCS negates one "point" of warp disruptor strength - a warp disruptor is one "point" and a warp scrambler is two "points". NOTE: A ship can fit multiple disruptors/scramblers and can use them all on you, AND there are certain ships in the game which can put an "infinite strength" point on you.
There are severe drawbacks to using WCS, though, and the primary one is that they cut your targeting range a lot.
So, if you don't use WCS, how do you get through that gatecamp? Well, unless you're carrying superior firepower, you don't. So, here's how to avoid them in the future:
Before you jump into low/null sec, hop into a shuttle. Update your clone (move your medical clone somewhere close) and jump into the system you want to enter. A shuttle can warp nearly instantly, and only a specially fitted ship is going to catch you. Even if they do, you've lost a shuttle and not your 100m ISK battlecruiser.
Check dotlan maps for the systems you are going to be traveling through (specifically ships/pods killed in the past hour) and if you see a lot, avoid the system. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. GǪ" |

Huh, now there's a really good point. I never thought of checking the map's for killed ships. That seems like a really good idea.
Also, how does the shuttle thing work exactly? Run it once to see if it's clear, then one home, then one to get the battle cruiser there?

And remember that some low sec border gate camps are organised, with scouts on the hisec side. The actual campers will only warp to the gate to shoot targets of interest: so they won't jump your shuttle scout, they'll wait for you to go through with your T2 fitted Drake.
One option is to scout with a covert ops frigate, and try to make contact with the locals in each system. See if you can't make friends.
Another option is to make friends with other people like you, and head out to low sec in force. Sit a covops frigate off the gate and watch what happens for a few nights. Get to know who's doing the camping, what ships they use, and try to figure out what fittings they're likely to be using GÇö you can visually inspect their ships to see the types of weapons being used. Organise a larger fleet than the campers use, and send through a bait ship: typically a battleship with all slots dedicated to tank. Once the bait is taken, send the rest of your fleet through (but remember they'll be watching the hisec gate, so keep your ships out of sight).
Yet another option is to join Faction Warfare and participate in the local militia, forgetting about your goal of running missions from a 0.4 until you're familiar with the community in the systems you frequent.

Once the scram is on you, your options are:
1: Go fast enough to get out of scram range, when the scram drops warp before they can re-engage it. Variations include bumping them, bouncing them off the gate, etc. Note that this rarely works as they're generally prepared to outrun you (they'll have a web or just be in a fast ship.
2: Break their target lock somehow, generally with ECM. Then warp out before they re-lock.
3: Us a capacitor drain of some kind (usually a Nos) to kill their cap so they can't keep the module running.
4: Kill them fast, then warp away before their friends arrive.
Generally speaking being cautious and not putting yourself in a position to be trapped is going to have a higher success rate, though. |

One very simple thing you could have done to avoid getting killed there - and generally when you jump into a low-sec gate-camp, is just go back to the gate you came in from and jump back through to safety. The aggressing ship will not be able to follow you due to aggression mechanics (look it up on eve-wiki).
If you were facing off against one ship - especially a battlecruiser, you could have easily tanked his damage until you made it back to gate even if warp scrambled (which would shot down your MWD). Remember not to shoot back however, or the gate will not permit you to jump through.
Good luck next time. |

Yep that was actually the first thing I tried once I got warp scrambled, but I was 8000m from the gate and he hit me with some field where I could only pull 40 m/s. Once I realized I couldn't get back I returned fire but he had half my shields already. |

Well I'm a noob to :p been playing eve off and on for years, and your right the first few times you claw your way onto a battleship or other shiny new toy only to lose it to a gank or gate camp really does deter people from still playing the game.
I wish the Eve tutorial would stress the point "it doesn't matter what you fly". Frigates, cruisers, battleships all have their place in a corp. I spend most of my time in a destroyer popping frigates and thats fun enough for me for now.
Eve should really point out that just because it only takes these two or three skill to get in a ship, doesn't mean you can actually fly it. When you sit down and go thru the dozens of skills for piloting, gunnery, upgrades etc it's insane. Without them tho, your just sitting in a toy.
Anyway for your issue, unless you are fully skilled and fitted in the ship your flying, you have no chance in PVP. Best defense against gate camps is to not enter one. The shuttle scouting is nice and all if you have a ship with valuable cargo, but your not likely to do this every single time you want to run a mish that takes out of system. Same with mult-boxers, it's nice and all, but for the average Eve player it's overkill.
So my advice as a fellow newb and really I'm just a casual eve player: -Also agree check the map for the route you want to fly, takes a minute and saves you all sorts of headache -Are you using auto pilot? I hope not, but this is a common mistake, use autopilot to show you the next gate in your route on screen, but pilot there manually using Warp to 0. I've avoided death countless times this way -Don't buy any ship unless you have a bank roll to afford buying ten of them. (you can pop my destroyer, I don't stress I have 5 others fully fitted in station :p ) -Don't fly a ship with the base skills, ensure you first learn all the secondary recommended skills to back it up. |

Just because you hit warp doesnt mean you are in warp. The time it takes before you are aligned and at 75% speed you are still targetable and the warp scramble stops the warp if you are away. Your drake is slow to warp, something smaller and faster would have better luck.
You could scout the gates with a alt in cov-ops etc and find another way around if they are camped, soon your learn what systems to avoid.
if you do get caught and can make it back to the gate dont shoot and go as fast as you can (that thing that slowed you down is a web) or get out of scram range (normally 20KM or 24KM) If you cant get away....turn on tank, get in range for you guns and go out in a blaze of glory, you might take one down with you.
In Lowsec you shouldnt lose your Pod, when you know your ship is going to die, find something you can warp to, align and spam warp when your ship goes you should be able to get your pod out before it can be locked unlessthey have a stupid high sensor strength/smart bomb/you **** up and are trying to approach something not warp. It's not been nice, but thanks for using lube

If you want to try and taste low sec a little, with the least possible risk, run some distribution missions in a Blockade Runner.
Asuming you're Caldari (you're flying a drake)
try this crane:
High
Covert-ops Cloaking device.
mid:
Experimental Mn10 warpdriver. (other midslots are not realy importand but you could put in a EM ward Amplifyer and some invunrabilty fields)
Low
2X Nano Fiber internal structure T2
Rigs:
2X Medium low friction nozzle joints T2
This will give you a beloww 3.5 align time depending on skills. Together with the Covert-opps cloak only a combination badluck and stupidity can get you caught in lowsec.
When you get a little familliar with the area, you can play with the low slots and riggs optimising your cargo hold.
you can also use it to do some low sec PI and or bring in some frigates for PvP.
Also learn to use your D-scan.
It's some training time but it's worth every minute of it.
Especialy when running PI, the investment is about 200 million ISK including ship and collonies and from that point on you're only gaining isk.

So, you'll advice a newbie with 2.8m SP who can barely afford his Drake / whatever T1 ship to get a Crane with Tech 2 Rigs to try Gatecamp running?
lolno.
My advice for simple gate running: Get a conder or better a vigil, fit it with a mwd / nanos / speed rigs and try to outrun gatecamps just for fun. The ship will cost you about 300k Isk and it's totally worth the fun you get.
If you want to survive a gatecamp with your drake, the best thing to do:
1) Wait ~15sec for the Session Timer 2) Approach gate, overheat hardeners / prop mod 3) Hope they've no webs 4) Jump when in range aka Luba Cibre |

A couple of days ago I did 14 jumps through lowsec in my armor rupture, encounterd 4 camps and arrived safe at my destination.
What could you have done? Travel fit that drake : warp core stabs in the lows You could have burned back to the gate and jumped back to highsec. You could have fitted a simple T1 cloak. You could have scouted the gate.
You did none of the above and got killed. Learn from the experience and better luck next time. Fix FW ! |

Miss typed the T2 riggs, although these t2 are very cheap 13 million/ but t1 will do the less than 3.5 aligntime
This set up is done in 16 days training from scratch and although the hull is expensive the fitting isn't overall the finacial difference with a fully fitted Drake is not that big.
and although this will take a little longer and it's more expensie that the 300k Virgil gets you pass gate camps, it will do no more than that. So you are in low sec, then what?
The option I presented will give him the oppertunity to actualy make a little ISK whle he makes him self familiar with low sec, create save spots and pave the road for the rest of your ships.

what do when you jump through a gate and see a gatecamp on the other side?
(1) hold cloak, keep calm and assess the situation. You are cloaked for 30s unless you move, you have a ten seconds session change timer until you can use a gate again which you should wait out cloaked in any case. Don't panic, don't move - 30 seconds is a very long time for you to arrive at a decision.
(2) Your options are: (a) burn back to the gate (b) try to warp away (c) get tackled before you can warp but run away anyways (d) fight
(a) is what you will end up doing 9 times out of 10 and is why you always should have a microwarpdrive fitted. If there is only one hostile ship you will almost always want to choose this option: Toggle overheat on your MWD (Thermodynamics is an extremely important skill), decloak and burn back to the gate you came through. If they shoot/tackle/aggress you, don't shoot back. Once you are back at the gate there are two possibilities - they have aggressed you: this means they won't be able to use the gate for 2 minutes, you jump through and escape. - they haven't aggressed you: you warp to a safe location (station, moon, safespot, POS) in this solar system and laugh at them. If they have a lot of webs you may not make it back to the gate but if there is any chance you might make it, don't aggress anyone on this site - overheat your hardeners and pray.
(b) if you are in a smaller than the gatecamp (and they don't have a heavy interdictor or a lot of sensor boosters) you might be able to warp away before they get a point on you. If you are in a Drake and your enemy is in a Hurricane you won't.
(c) you might get pointed before being able to do option (b) but maybe you are fast enough to burn out of point range (and warp off). If you are in a nano ship or have both an afterburner and a microwarpdrive this might be a viable option. If they have light tackle or long-range webs it's a bad idea.
(d) only do this if none of the other options has any chance of succeeding and you have a realistic hope to take out at least one enemy.
elite pvp advice: you are in a drake and there is a lone hurricane camping the gate. zoom in on the hurricane and check the guns. if they are artillery or 220mm autocannons the hurricane will be armor tanked and is slow but probably has two webs will make option (a) risky, if you are outside web/scram range go for option (b)/(c). if the guns are 425mm autocannons the hurricane will probably have no web but is fairly agile, go for option (a). |

When venturing to low sec, make sure your autopiolot is set to "Prefer shortest" rather than "prefer safest".
Safest will generally direct you to a bottleneck system where gate campers tend to hang out. Shorter will have you slip in (generally) in a safer system.
Your best bet? An alt in a newbie ship. Fly your alt into the gate and jump. If the gate is camped... you basically lose nothing but a newbie ship and gain information. If it isn't, then you know it is safe..ish.
I've been flying distribution missions in a T1 industrial and have only been popped once.
Oh, and one last tip: Don't be Furious
By traveling to low sec, you accept the higher risk. Raging only encourages the campers. If you are popped, complement your attackers on the cunning of their camp setup. You may be surprised at the reaction that prompts. I don't make minerals. I just make ore 20% cooler. |

First thing, when you get scrammed on the gate, if you can't win, haul bawls back to the gate and jump. Known as "gate crashing".
Do not lock, fire, or otherwise do anything but get back to that gate and jump.
If you are webbed and scrammed, you still may be able to get back to that gate and jump.
Fit the appropriate Microwarp Drive.
If you are going to get burned down, and can't get away, fight back as much as possible. Target whatever is smallest and give it hell.
The biggest thing is, don't panic. Calmly go through the steps needed to get yourself back to safety.
Get used to losing ships, really. Can't sugarcoat that at all. In the end, you will get very hard to catch-and that does frustrate folks, believe it. |

You got quite a few good tips here already and I'll mostly leave it at that, but:

Before you jump into low sec for the first time a big fat window pops up that blocks your jump and tells you that you are about to do something dangerous and that you will probably die if you go on. This window asks you to confirm that you want to jump into low sec and gives you the chance to cancel the jump and stay in hi sec.
This window is also pretty intimidating.
So with all sincere respect, what did you expect to happen? I agree with you that gate camps are stupid crap and that it sucks you lost so much but it's not like this came out of nowhere, isn't it?
Lord X3n0s Aeon wrote:-How could I have beat that warp scramble? I hit warp THE second the menu populated on spawn.
You already got this answered but I'll elaborate on it further anyway. There are different kinds of tackling modules and depending on how big and well organized the gate camp is and which kind of ship you're flying you have to approach those situations differently. Also your chance of survival varies accordingly from very good to certain death.
But since knowledge is power some words to tackling gear ranges:
Warp Disruptors have a range of 20+ km which can be boosted past 100 km. Their effect can e.g. be countered by 1 Warp Core Stabilizer.
Warp Scramblers have a range of 7.5+ km and can be boosted past past 40 km. Their effect can be countered by 2 Warp Core Stabilizers and additionally they shut your Microwarpdrive off.
Scripted Warp Disruption Field Generators have a range of 24 km up to 36 km and cannot be countered by Warp Core Stabilizers.
All those modules prevent you from warping away and need to have a lock on you. Hitting the warp button to escape is not enough as they will abort your warp once they effect you unless you already entered warp. But depending on your ship this can take from a few seconds to more than half a minute.
The module that slowed you down and put you to a crawl was a Stasis Webifier.
Stasis Webifiers have a range of 10+ km up to past 115 km and slow your speed 50% to 90% down. They do not prevent you from warping however.
A good gate camp will have specialized remote sensor boosted ships with gang link support that will catch you almost immediately even from great ranges. If you jump into one of those camps your chances of survival are very slim.
A lousy gate camp will only have on or two ships sitting right at the gate with a T2 web and disruptor, maybe also a scrambler once they got close to you. If you land into one of those camps burning back to the gate is often a good call.
Since they have to lock you first before they can tackle you small ships with small signatures which align quickly have an easier time to escape than big ships with big signatures which align slowly. Like your Drake for example.
Additionally in 0.0 and w-space you will encounter bubbles. Those are essentially like warp disruptors but cover a large area and can manipulate your warp exit point which will either drag you past your destination or pull you out early, depending on how it is set up. Warp Core Stabilizers won't help you with those either.
And then there are smartbomb gate camps (if you want to see those pass the low sec route between Jita and Rens through Rancer, good luck!).
But bubbles and smartbomb gate camps can be explained to you by somebody else.
Also the dude who told you that low sec is a good place for a 2.8m skillpoints newb solo Drake pilot is a moron. Don't listen to him again! |

Your own fault here, it gives a warning pop-up on the gates. Almost infinite pages on the internet explaining the difference betweeen High-sec, Low-sec and 0.0 space.
There is something called noob haven and it's called HIGH-SEC.
Stop whining about your loss and HTFU and play EVE, if you don't know how low-sec works and how to try to prevent being killed on gates, you have a lot to learn. So why did you try to learn in your Drake, why not take a frigate to see how it is out there.
Ooh wait, you are someone who thinks EVE is all about ISK and safety, well wake up, it isn't.
Hey, uh, J'Poll? You might want to dial it back a bit. The OP appears to GENUINELY be asking for help, rather than just bitching and moaning. I realise that's pretty uncommon, but lets not cloud the issue by flaming them, okay? "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. What could you have done? Travel fit that drake : warp core stabs in the lows You could have burned back to the gate and jumped back to highsec. You could have fitted a simple T1 cloak. You could have scouted the gate.
You did none of the above and got killed. Learn from the experience and better luck next time.
I like this. Maybe a good thing to suggest to other newbs (like me). Once you get to 5M ISK or so fit out a frigate for 1M or less. Pick somewhere in a new constellation with a path that will take you through 0.5 and maybe even 0.4 or lower systems. Run it. See how far you get. If you make it there, pat yourself on the back and try running to some other new place. Continue until you get killed. :)
Repeat as desired and budget allows.
So I made up the 1M ISK number. What would you vets say? maybe lower even, like 500K? Can you suggest a fit for each race?

If you are just scouting out a path, use a shuttle or newbie ship. You can check for the presence gate camps quickly and easily. Even if you get caught in one and popped you are out either 12k isk or 0 isk.
It never hurts to do that prior to flying a more expensive ship into low. If you are worried about getting podded and losing implants, switch to an alt and scout a bit.
The more time you spend in low, the more you'll learn about the locals. I've been flying around low sec in Genesis for awhile and I know what days of the week tend to be slow, what times of day are busy...what corps live there and which ones are organized. And most importantly, which gates tend to have camps.
The best teacher is exposure. Grab a cheap ship and live there for a bit until you are comfortable enough to venture in there with bigger rigs.

Generally speaking, translate your isk into time investment and that will tell you what the value of a given ship is to you.
Say, you make your isk by grinding missions. You're lazy, so you just run a drone brick, so L4 missions last from about 20 minutes to a couple hours, averaging out at about 45 mins while you watch TV in another window or something. Your average L4 mission returns you, say, 15Misk in reward for the amount of effort you put into looting/selling/salvaging.
So in the above example, your 5Misk ship represents about 15 minutes of mission-running. Probably losing it won't bother you all that much and you can risk it if you feel like it. If you're a newer player running L2s that's potentially several hours of your time, though, and scouting's probably a good idea.
As far as which scouting ship goes, though, for low-sec I'd just grab a shuttle. They cost like 100kisk, warp around fast, and it's not like you need to worry about defense beyond fleeing since there are no warp bubbles in low. Honestly, if your actual destination isn't in low-sec you don't need to scout at all 99% of the time, just warp directly from gate to gate with instant-jump and no one is going to catch you unless you're in a battleship or a really fat, clumsy transport ship (you can fit the lighter ones with some movement enhancers and still leap around quite fast). The one exception is smartbomb gangs, since those don't necessarily require targeting. |

The cloak timer is actually 60 seconds, which indeed gives you more than enough time to asses the situation, for the rest excellent post.

Well not to addess the issues about how to get out of a gate camp but two other points:
1. Shoot your friends who told you to go to low sec to make money on missions. Those dudes are your real enemies. With freinds like that you dont need pirate gate camps to run into. Even if you were to make more money from a low sec mission...which is debatable the amount of risk involved would make it not worthwhile. Null sec missions can be interesting because they are often the only source of some valuable pirate faction ships like cynabols or macherials. Running missions for pirate npc corps is still very risky for the money involved. The only missions in low sec which are probably worth the additional risks involved are level 5 missions.
2. Pirates kill for the fun of it. Thats all it is about. They are not really too concerned about you chasing them because they are not going into high sec anyway. You jump into their camp they are going to fight. You will not likely find them interested in fighting without having overwhelming numbers on their side. That is just the way it is. Vowing revenge isnt likely to be productive for you. |

Get an improved cloaking device, a microwarp drive and head to low sec. If you encounter a gate camp. don't panic. You have a few seconds of default cloak from jumping through the stargate. So what you want to do is find an astral body of any kind that you can warp to, that is in the opposite direction of the gate camping fleet.
What do want to do here is a bit tricky, and you should practice this in high sec before relying on it. Click on the align to button on the astral body you picked. As soon as you do this, click on your improved cloaking device and then immediately after, click the microwarp drive until it kicks in. You only have a couple second grace period where you're allowed to activate the MWD after activating the cloaking device.
When activated, click the MWD again so it'll shut off on the upcoming cycle. As soon as it does, decloak and warp to the astral body you're aligned to. You will warp instantly.
This works because in order to warp to a target instantly you need two things:
Firstly, you need to be perfectly aligned to the destination,
Secondly, you need to be at 3/4ths of your top ship velocity.
The reason this trick works is that the MWD increases your speed dramatically and pushes it well over your top speed when you aren't using it, so as soon as it's shut off, your speed will start to drop back down but it'll already be over the standard top speed of your ship. So as soon as you disable the cloak and click on "warp to" you will warp instantly.
Again this requires a lot of fast accurate mouse clicking but with a bit of practice it works very well. Practice it enough and no gate camp will ever get you. The only time this does not work is if you jump through the gate and end up 2 km from another player, if you're that close, you can't activate the cloaking device. That rarely happens though.
Good luck. |

Really it deters you from playing the game? Why would you go to low sec for any reason knowing that as long as the other guy can tank the gate guns they can shoot you with impunity?
On default setting you get warned before entering a low sec system informing you exactly of what could happen on the other side. If you choose to enter reading that warning you choose to take on the risk. Its like Trading or gambling nothing is guaranteed, some times theres a margin call and most of the time the house wins.

PVP is fun. PVP involves destroying other players ships regardless of who they are. If a choke point in low sec gives you a steady stream of ships to kill who wouldn't camp that pipe. Its not cheap its called strategy. By the way those camp able choke points are know to all sorts of folks meaning those people can get killed by other nastier gangs if they dont know what there doing. When you enter low sec or null sec or even if you engage a thief that has stolen from you in a mission you implicitly agree to the fact that this fight may end in you loosing your ship.
You can move about low sec in something cloaky or fast. Running a mission in low or null sec is like running a site in a WH only with local, your mashing D'scan looking for combat probes and always checking to see who's new in system. The Drake has the spare high-slot to do it, and I've actually very frustratingly missed Drake kills in lowsec multiple times because of this trick. Make sure to practice it with a friend or something before trying it for real.
Other than that, if they have the firepower to kill a Drake on a lowsec gate... there is really not much you can do, at least in your Drake. Frigates usually get through just fine (and even then not all the time), but anything above that is too easy to catch. While you're still feeling out your way, that's good advice. As you get more experience, you'll figure out ways to evade the gate campers (ships which can mount covert-ops cloaks are a godsend for missions sending you to lowsec from hisec); as a newbie, tell the mission agents to take their missions to lowsec and cram them (you can do that once every 4 hours per agent with no repercussions).
Now, a Drake can potentially survive a gate camp long enough to crash back out the other side, but it's not a sure thing. You'll need to be running in a Drake with a T2 tank at the very least, and it may take a full-blown brick tank to get you through (3 shield purger rigs, triple or quadruple shield power relays, dual T2 large shield extenders, one or two mid-slot shield rechargers, EM ward amplifier and T2 invulnerability field). And a full brick tank comes at the expense of firepower and maneuverability.
And the general advice holds: don't fly something unless you can buy and fit out its replacement if something goes wrong (Murphy's Law is encoded into the EVE server farm, believe me; something will go wrong), and don't take a battlecruiser out shooting until you can fully T2-tank it. BC's are worth the extra money and time for that. |

This is absolutely untrue:
1. Low sec missions have a substantially higher payout. 2. If you are prepared a lot of the risk can be reduced/mitigated.
The OP just went into low-sec unprepared with the idea that low-sec is a higher-risk extension of high-sec, when the factors that come into play are vastly different. ICRS - Intergalactic Certified Rocket Surgeon |

If you are in a frigate and you get caught at a lowsec gate camp, you're just doing it all wrong.
If you are in Nullsec, its a different story, you should be bouncing off the sun and other celestials to get a good scan on the gate to see if there is a bubble. IF the bubble is present, then the best course of action is to warp to the nearest planet/moon and warp to the gate from there. Most nullsec bubbles are in the direction of the sun/station/gate

There is a lot of bad advice in here apart from the first few attempts at it. Ultimately it wont matter though, as most ppl either figure it out and move past high sec or don't and stay they until they become rank and file in null.
Here is an honest protip, your first few time to lowsec, don't head there for profit, head there to figure it out (recon work). I read the first page, skimmed the rest, FYI. I see people saying "Take a shuttle" or "Fit a fast Frigate for relatively cheap" etc etc. What I didn't see anyone mention is Smart Bombs. Frigs and shuttles are great for getting around speedily, they suck, however, for slipping past gate camps in low sec. I learned the hard way that a favorite tactic of loser "veterans" with no life is to sit at a gate all day in a ship capable of tanking the gate guns and wait for innocent passer-by's only to pop 7 smart bombs as they try and scoot by. What happens is instant trip for said innocent back to wherever their clone happens to be stationed. Do not pass go, do not collect whatever you were going to collect in low sec. As far as I know (I'm new, been playing about a month) the only way to get past that little gem of a trick is to take a ship that can survive the smart bomb assault long enough to get through the gate. Ships like the OP's drake which is vulnerable to experienced tacklers. So, what's a noob to do? |

While this is a very good advice, you might still run into a gatecamp just being put in place, keep that in mind. Though not every gate is camped all the time. Generally speaking it is a good idea to plot a course, see where it takes you, and then have a look around if there is an alternative route, that takes a few jumps more, but is not very popular. Those tend to be less camped (again, not every gate is camped 24/7). I'd still always let my scout (alt/another account) jump through first, just in case, if that doesn't work for you, jump in yourself in something cheap, prefarably insured, and not neccessarily in +5 imps. A few jumps into lowsec you are usally pretty "safe". (Until combat probes appear on your d-scan, god, i hate those. If you see them, just run, don't finish this or that ship, just run) While Low-Sec certainly has issues, mechanic or player-wise (there a lot of great folks there too ), it's a perfect place to get your adrenaline rush, and it is quite rewarding to have made it through a camp alive

The option I presented will give him the oppertunity to actualy make a little ISK whle he makes him self familiar with low sec, create save spots and pave the road for the rest of your ships.
I don't know what implants you are putting in but it takes a helluva lot longer than 16 days to train for a Crane and then the appropriate fittings to make it effective. A T1 cloak on a blockade runner is useless as well. If he's having a hard time replacing a Drake I would definitely not recommend him trying to jump into a 140 million ISK Crane which is easily double the cost of the Drake. You're giving crap advice and telling him to break the first rule of EVE. It's been a while since my alt trained for a blockade runner but I believe it took 6 - 8 weeks to get it trained so I could fit and fly it correctly (correctly being the important word of that sentence).

If losing your ship to PVP makes you furious low sec is not for you - this game may not be for you. But low sec is not. |

So, here's how to avoid them in the future: Before you jump into low/null sec, hop into a shuttle. Huh, now there's a really good point. I never thought of checking the map's for killed ships. That seems like a really good idea. Also, how does the shuttle thing work exactly? Run it once to see if it's clear, then one home, then one to get the battle cruiser there? -Good points though guys, I appreciate the feedback. All that makes sense for 0.0, but 0.4? It seemed like now you have: Empire -> insta-killin da noobs What if you had: Empire (noob haven) -> more profitable -> risky -> dangerous -> wild west As in, things were more incremental?
That IS how it is. Lowsec isn't nearly as dangerous as null. In nullsec you can put down warp disruption bubbles that prevent warping while inside them. In other words, no targetting involved. I would advise reading up on both lowsec and nullsec before any further ventures... after all, you DID get a warning when you jumped into lowsec that people could try to kill you whenever they want. But like most people, you probably just ignored it.
Number one rule in EVE: Don't fly what you can't afford to lose (especially in low/null). |
