You can't take a large number of crappy, small alliances, and compare them to superpowers, and make any kind of reasonable assessment based on 'number of alliances'.
Try talking size of cap fleets, member counts, fleet size, timezone coverage - anything but 'number of alliances' - its completely meaningless
Taken out of context as you are doing, I can see why you might think this.
Weren't some of these "small and crappy" alliances (to use your phrase) big and "crappy" at one point and are now "small and crappy" through attrition due to losses on the battlefield? How many alliances are no longer under the "Kenny" banner because they simply ceased after getting their heads kicked in by "game mechanics?"
I actually do praise TAFKAB for creating a great deal of content for the 0.0 politics side of this game. I've said it before. It's one of the very few things I admire about them. However, too many people forget that so much of what goes on today from questionable in-game antics, to metagaming tactics, to forum-whoring was brought to us by TAFKAB itself, it's just that Goons and some of their allies over time have gotten better at it than they have and they no longer have "fear," titan/capital superiority or remote doomsdays to hide behind any longer. Incidentally, regardless of how anyone wants to spin it, Goons didn't **** Haargoth off...BoB did. Once again, their own actions/behavior/attitude does them in.
Their strategy of making enemies of half of EVE and then enlisting the "crappy" other half to meatshield for them doesn't seem like the best strategy in the world to me. TAFKAB created the mess they in which they find themselves in just about every way imaginable. They created an environment in which enough people truly dislike them enough to set aside their own substantial differences and simply fight Kenny. Molle (or his atrocious "ghostwriter") then proceeds to make them a laughinstock every time he posts in this forum.
On top of all that, the pro-Kenny side actually has the gall to continually whinge about numbers and NAPfests. That's the cherry on top of the whipped cream on top of the crap sundae they scooped out of their arses to feed themselves.
I do agree with you on the point you have made about AAA being the big winners in all of this. To me, that's pretty clear...at least as things stand now. The thing is, the Coalition fighting them really couldn't care less. That's not what they are in this for. It's no surprise several entities are making out like bandits away from "the fight." I don't see this as being in any way special or notable. Good for them. They can enjoy it while it lasts. Why not?
