Beside the obvious, which is written in the show info box. I'm going for archaeology, salvaging, worm-hole exploration (read "suicide") and sleeper ratting eventually. What type of probe is best?
Currently using combat scanner probes, as an all-in-one package. ------ buy my music here or listen to it here |

Sisters Core Scan Probe Launcher with Sisters Core Probes are best.

Combat scanner probe both ships as anomalies etc, the normal probe can't probe ships BUT it can size down one more than combat probes increasing their probing strength. So you might end up not being able to probe something with a combat probe while the normal ones would work. If you're going to explore Wspace always bring the extended launcher and combat probes together with normal ones.
Then there's the systemwide probe which is... systemwide, it's very handy to get an initial, fast way of finding out wth is going on in the system.

Deep space scanner probe, can get to a HUGE range so officially not systemwide but in reality it is. Mind you, you're not really going to pinpoint ships with it at those ranges but dropping 1 gives you a good idea of what to expect.

I use expanded probe launcher and core probes for finding arch/salv/wormhole/hacking sites. Combat probes are, well for combat. they are better for finding ships, they can find plexes but not as well as the core probes.
To increaase your chances of finding something I suggest using a ship with a bonus to scanning like a cov ops ship or its tech 1 equivalent.

Sisters would be best considering your needs. However. If you are allready using combat probes, that means you are using the expanded probe launcher. It can also use deepspace scanning probes(needs high lvl Astrometrics). They can scan for everything, but not at 100%. Use them in conjunction with core probes to find your desiered site, and at the same time see if any players are around to see if the wormhole is safe.
Your combat probes won't find the archaeology/salvage sites.
