So, having perused the crappy sequals thread a bit down the page i thought id make one for those films that either improved on the first one or at least didnt utterly disgrace it. Heres an obvious one to get you started.
Aliens - Took everything good from the first film and mixed in a whole new load of awesome. To this day still one of the best Sci fi films ive ever seen.

I'd disagree with Aliens taking everything that was good from Alien. They're different. If we're going to compare them with (alot worse) horror films Alien is a stalker type horror like Friday 13th while Aliens has more in common with zombie horde movies.
Anyway. If we've mentioned Aliens we have to mention Terminator 2 ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

The Bourne trilogy. Each of the sequels to The Bourne Identity were excellent, and they're all as strong as each other.

I do not agree with the Aliens thing at all - 1+3 (yes I like the third Alien movie) are the best.
Regarding good sequels, how about Empire strikes back, the best of the Star Wars films. godfather 2 is also great, eventho the first is the best. Dark Knight was a good sequel too. Before Sunset was also good (maybe a bit girly for this audience).
and I bet there are many more. Not all sequels stink.

How about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly? Each one of the Fistfull of Dollars trilogy improved on the previous one, culminating in the sheer brilliance of the final one. Still full of some of the best and most inventive action sequences, and a good line in black humour. The bathtub scene is a classic for this.
If you haven't watched it, get and do so. Don't be put off by the fact that it is a western.
Oh, and Terminator might well be a very enjoyable film, the original is still better, and the sequel is marred by Edward Furlong, and that bloody 'thumbs-up' at the end.

Gotta agree here. Gotta disagree with the Bourne series. They were great shoot-em-ups but the kung-fu sense bullets mystical powers thing got way out of hand after a while. I mean if they had called it Jedi without Lightsaber series it would have been more appropriate. Sticking to the original books was a little too difficult as well.
If there was a "soon to be B classic" then Die Hard II has my nomination for successful sequel.

Terminator 2, Bourne sequels and Aliens (debatable) all as suggested, were at least as good as, if not better than their predecessors. I would add Godfather II, Superman II, Batman Returns (excepting the bit with Penguin riding on a giant, rubber duck, that was just surreal) and Nightmare on Elm Street III. Also I think Return of the Jedi > New Hope and Episode III >>> Episode I (anything had to be really). -------------

What about the Evil Dead trilogy? Hard to beat the first one but Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness were at least just as good.
Seconding the Die Hard franchise, all of them are good imo. ---------- This post brought to you by the worst PVP'er in Eve |

Dude, Alan Rickman! C'mon! Agreed on Evil Dead II tho. AoD was fun but lacked the horror. |

Yeah he was definitely the best Die Hard villain although he had some tough competition from naked kata guy in DH2. ---------- This post brought to you by the worst PVP'er in Eve |

Indiana Jones - Although I'm not big fan of the sequel, the third was just awesome.
Mission Impossible 1/2/3 - I think these climbed in quality.
Back to the Future - 2nd one is my favorite by far.
Toy Story - 2nd one was way better!

T2 was an awesome sequel. It morphed into this rollecoaster ride of awesome explosions and awesome effects. It did all of this with an awesome attitude that made it far more awesome-slick cool extreme as all things that Ahnold touches are automatically upgraded with awesome. Because Austrians are awesome, naturally.
Originally by: ReaperOfSly The Empire Strikes Back.
Empire was the best star wars movie imo.
Gee, now...I wonder why.........................................................hm?
Also to those arguing apples and oranges. The question OP asked was what was the best sequel in your opinion. Not whether or not a Sequel was a true successor of the Original or what genre it belonged to etc.
TL;DR Version:
T2 awesome. Austrians awesome. George Lucas is a douche. Apples and oranges good for you.
