Is it possible to detect probes (all varieties) via the directional scanner? If so, how? What would the overview setting be under? I tried to deploy a probe and manually add it to the overview but I couldn't. |

You need to disable that it uses your overview settings. Then you see a load of crap, with probes between the crap. |

I launched a probe and then did that. It didn't show the probe on the scan at all. It was 2000M from me and I ran a 360. Thoughts? |

Perhaps you mislooked them. Probes will show if you did uncheck "use active overview" checkbox (as probes won't show in overview ever).
Possibe problems:
1. Too many stuff around. Set scan range to few au (as no one will able to scan you with probes 8au away, except may be when you use really big ship).
2. Some other languages clients set probes name to their language ("сканирующая проба" or something like that for russian for example). Sort results by type and look on types, not on names!
If you see probes with distance in 0-300km range - that means someone just launched them on your grid, they aren't dangerous really (if no other probes off-grid). |

Yes. I see them, now.
I posted a topic in Assembly Hall to add probes to the overview so that you could better configure what you're scanning for, specifically.
Leave it to EVE UNI to help me learn something new. Thanks. =) |

As one who uses probes to catch enemies - i'm against making them visible in overview. :)
Would be much better if they'll make probes types in "probe (combat probe)" style instead current "combat scanner probe". That is real pain to find all ship scanning probes in the list as they can have types "combat scanner probe", "sisters combat scanner probe", "deep space scanner probe" and "sisters deep space scanner probe" that force to browse the list back and forward.

If I remember correctly, you can sort your scan listig by type - that way you can have "core scanner probes" and "combat scanner probes" (regardless of whether they are sisters or not) all grouped up near the top for ease of use.
very handy - especially in wormholes. |

Put a small scan distance like 2 or 4 AUs, and sort the scan by distance. If you're doing a plex/mission, all you should see are wrecks/containers from other pockets, probes and incoming ships, given that you're far enough from any POS.

You remember incorrectly. That is why i'd want their types renamed. Sisters combat and combat probes won't get grouped and you have to go through overflowed list with that "corporation hangar", "silo" and "ship assembling arrays" every time. :(

If you sort by the 'Name' column instead of the 'Type' column, all probes show up with the name 'Scanner Probe.'
Therefore, if you want to know if any probes are in the vicinity: 1) Uncheck the 'use overview settings' box 2) Click Scan 3) Click on the 'Name' column so the scanner sorts by name 4) Scroll to 'S' and bingo; any probes that are in space at the range you've selected come up as 'Scanner Probes'
I keep my scanner at max range for simplicity's sake and it works well for me. No need for any changes to probe type naming as the functionality is all in the game (somewhat backwards) by using the Name column.
Good luck,

Eh. Makes me feel like old elementary shool teacher. Read my first post in the thread and save your ship from raping by russian/chinese/japan pirates. You won't get "Сканирующая проба" sorted in same group as "Scanning probe", that is for sure. |

Personally i think haveing probes even on the scanner let alone the overview is a bit stupid, removes any element of surprise or the point of the having a covert ops if if everyone can see the goddamn "combat scanner proper" on 360.... |

I have never seen an object in my English client come up in my scanner with a name created by someone else's foreign language client, with the exception of Faction Wafare plexes (fixed bug) and ship/structure names (player created). If that is an issue with other language clients, I am unaware of it and can't speak to it. Definitely would create a problem with the sorting method described above.
For the most part, I would suggest that the method described above would work for OP.

That will make more docking games just (in high sec at least) as hugging station will be much safer than flying to somewhere. Boring. Anyway, you can make suprise to everyone who doesn't check scanner every 10 seconds - they warp pretty fast, use that. :)
Also i'm going to ask everyone in our fleets to rename ships to "Scanner probe" or "Сканирующий зонд" as people seem too lazy or unaware to check types, not names. That should hide probes movement. :)
