Hi all,
I'm running fine EvE on Ubuntu 9.04 amd64, and ventrilo (push to talk included), my only problem is the mic, it doesn't work I have tryed everything possible and still not working, after forum searching I've found that my sound card mic capabilities don't work under Linux :(
So my question is, anyone running Ubuntu 9.04 amd64 and using ventrilo on wine, has a sound card that works? if so could you tell which. So I can buy one that works.
Thanks in advance.
Tsiru.

Check out this wiki at ALSA: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main . This is a list of the supported sound cards.
ALSA is a common audio backbone for Linux. It has support for a lot of different hardware, even if it is not originally supported for Linux. It's probably what your system is already using.

actual card name was something like "Soundblaster live 512!"
works fine, quite a few guides on the net on how to configure it as well you can get a PCI card like that for few $ on ebay

Most on-board soundcards work these days. Perhaps you tell us what hardware you have got.
If you are sure that nothing works then get a Creative Labs card. An old, used Audigy 2 ZS PCI OEM, called emu10k1 under Linux, should work fine. I now use an X-Fi Titanium PCI-Express x1 and CreativeLabs provides a driver for it in source code.
And make sure your ventrilo is working and your microphone is not broken. Your headset may have a hidden switch or volume control and it could be simply turned off. |

Not just *any* Creative Labs card, though. I got a Creative X-Fi Extreme Gamer card with my desktop when I got it in 2007, and ALSA is just now starting to get a preliminary unstable driver going for it. Turns out it was a totally new architecture.

Those are both very good tips.
You might do best by staying away from PCI-E audio cards -ESPECIALLY the "Creative Labs X-Fi Extreme Audio PCI-E" card or any other Creative Labs based card to include those from other manufacturers.
However, I selected an ASUS Xonar D2X based on reading from the ALSA web site. -Only trouble is, the Windows support for that card is lacking -at least under Eve Online. ASUS came out with a patch for Command & Conquer but I don't see one for Eve Online. :( The specific problem I experienced with that card, under Windows, was with a frequent loud popping from the speakers.
Why do I mention Windows here? Well, ATI support under linux is in "shambles" right now -to quote one of the Radeon bug reports on https://bugzilla.redhat.com. So, until I can replace my CrossFire with NVIDIA, I'll have to use Windows to Play Eve Online.

no, we don't. the idea of increasing the ego of the ventrilo developer would only cause more issues.
1) his licensing sucks 2) vent isn't that good 3) he is full of nothing but lies and false promises
Use Mumble which IS cross platform, has better voice quality, and has lower latency than Ventrilo.

My TF2/misc clan has used mumble for a while now, and I have to say it's simply fantastic - if I could persuade the world to use it I would.

We all using Mumble in our corp for these reason:
- Multi-Platform - The best voice quality - The best latency - Free & Open source
Ventrillo is the worst of all under Linux... Sometime it work, sometime it just bug!

Mumble is wonderful but scares the noobs that get lost in the initial configuration. It has autogain so everyone is heard at the same level, noise filtering, etc.
