Colonel Cornbread Minmatar Brutor tribe	Posted - 2009.06.12 18:05:00 - [1] You know how GTC's cost around 15 dollars (well, 60-day ones are like 30 or 40 dollars at the local game store, right?) and you can convert it to ~400m ISK? Due to the nature of the game, you NEED ISK and time to do anything in the game. We all have time but not ISK. Now, before I get to the point, here's some backstory: I hate work. Currently I am only 18 years old so I work at a fast food restaurant until I get a real job (but after I finish college...), and I hate THAT job. I want the real job so I can make some real money and have some real hours. Everytime my managers ask me to do a favor for them - as in, I work one of the shifts that someone else needed to cancel out - I always say 'No.' due to my gaming addiction (well, I wouldn't really call it an addiction, it's more of a hobby and I just have too much free time) I am always putting gaming first before work. I don't spend that much money, I only spend it on buying games, monthly fees, some necessities, and that's it. So... ever since I've been playing this game seriously (it took me a while to appreciate the game, but now that I have a strong vision of how the game works, I enjoy it soooo much more), my greed for ISK has grown more and more. So, I always think of spending some money to get a couple billion ISK in the game to fund my pvp habits... Then there's the work option to make more money. All of the managers usually don't ask me to do a favor since they know my answer - but something happened - a week ago, when I had caught notice of someone complaining that they needed someone to work for them on 'that' day, I spoke up. I'd work for that person. My co-workers and managers were astonished. Did I actually say yes? I couldn't even believe myself, my very first thought after that was 'maybe I can buy a couple of GTC's and get some real ISK in my wallet.' A week later, a manager actually asked me to work some overtime (the shift was 5-10pm, and they wanted me to work to midnight). I said, sure. Two hours is basically a 30 day GTC or a monthly fee for me. However, I have not yet spent money on the game, I've never spent any real amounts of money on games except to buy the game, and monthly fees: so I am a little... nervous about buying GTC's...but I am actually making more money IRL because of this game. This game also encourages me to work more if I'm training something for a while - because I could just work while I train some long skill. Am I the only one affected by EVE in this way?

I too am in college, with a part time job (that I more or less hate, mainly because I'm a worthless hedonist who despises responsibility) and I've been tempted to buy isk. Mixing work and pleasure by trying to equate isk to hours worked, I think, can reduce overall enjoyment of the game. I've noticed the eve community is alot more aware of the concept of opportunity cost than in other mmos, but it's much more complicated than "I can make so much more ISK at mcdonalds than in game, thus I should work at mcdonalds". Of course ideally you should know what you want, how to get it, and what other people say is irrelevant; but for me the best method is to pay the monthly fee and otherwise forget about RL money.
