emo vampires are super popular right now, they really need to be releasing asap! get like $15-100 right now per lady subscriber, who won't be paying any more as lady culture will shift in another few months anyways.

So is EVE. Sci-fi is the original fantasy setting, not orcs'n'dorks.
Quote: Regardless you mean fantasy as in, swords and goblins right? Demons still exist in fantasy so do more creepy things. DESPITE THIS. It is still very niche and the market is going to attract who? horror teens? People who are into horror movies and zombiewalks? It won't have a huge fan base.
WoD is a hugely successful P&P RPG franchise, and has been so over the last 20 years. It's about as niche as the Warcraft franchise — perhaps even less so… |

Edited by: TooNu on 20/06/2009 12:08:16 If WoD is hugely successful and by hugely you must mean that it is talked about quite a bit, get's alot of coverage in magazines and has a following large enough to warrant the need for an MMO. The thing is, WoD is none of these things. Is it perhaps because it is not exactly hugely successful? The fact that it is not mentioned about in many circles except for the horror block leads me to beleive it is niche and a niche MMO is going to die.
Lets look at a few other HUGELY SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISE types that **** all over this supposed World of Darkenss success and see how well they are doing.
Conan. As it turned out nobody gave a **** about Conan and his hyboria except for the few fantasy lovers who like the old school Barbarian universe. Or those that played and remained. It is bleeding out players faster than it is getting subs.
Warhammer. This is something you can brush with the HUGELY SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISE paint and clearly forerunner in the world of nerd. However it too is dying only retaining the players who started and can't let go. It's tabletop game is also dying out compared to it's great run in the 90's.
Tabula Rasa. Not huge but made by ultima online Richard Garriot which is enough for some to know and try because he knows his games. It went for the sci-fi crowd using a WoW skin but with more customisation and a few neat tricks. It died because nobody is interested in a 3rd person sci-fi MMO.
Matrix online, recently deceased. A full on customisable game based around a HUGELY SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISE based in a normal enviroment with normal weapons, locations, clothing etc.
Star Wars Galaxies. The mother of HUGELY SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISES. This game got shafted with a barbed club and it's players fled in droves for other games despite it's rich heritage and despite the sheer volumes of splinter stories and offshoots and character base and books, and films, cartoons, toys spanning 30 years. And this game is dying.
Coming out soon IE future competition.
Star Wars The old Republic. Bioware the king of RPGs (Fallout, Baldurs Gate, KOTOR) making an MMO based on the Star Wars universe. A recognisable franchise with a great and well recived developer making an MMO to the average new MMO gamer who looks at 2 boxes one being WoD and the oher being a recognisable brand, who do you think he is giving his money to?
Champions online. In this current world of superhero movies and pixar animation, a fun superhero game that looks modern and is CONSOLE COMPATABLE will reach the homes of thousands because of it's easy to get into look and appeal. A superhero game requires no actual thought because it is ingrained into society that Heros are good, thus the name of the game is to defeat the bad guys. Kids get it, new gamer adults get it, veteran gamers get it, and it caters for everyone.
Jumpgate Evolution. Another sci-fi game but faster paced, instant action, achivements, rewards, space situation, play out firefly, star wars, star trek fantasies all day long in instant gratification battles. And it looks superb. No spreadsheets like EvE and no thinking either. If you want a space game, it is eitehr EvE or jumpgate and if you want to just game and play, Jumpgate will hook you. If you want more depth, EvE is your boy.
Star Trek online. Another HUGELY SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISE. Based in Star Trek land with everything we all love anyway for lore and backstory. Is it enough though to pull people away from their current or upcoming MMOs?? Should another MMO cater for a small market or infact try and reach out to others?
So does a horror MMO warrant a game? It should try IMO but it will be a waste of resources that could be better spent in this game building it back up and fixing all the crap and turning it around into a bigger, better, faster, stronger game that lasts 20 years itself. |

I also think it is going to fail. All one has to do is look at the way CCP handled the Camarilla fan club in the UK to see the future of the WOD mmo.

It's all of those. Hell, it even had its own (admittedly awful) TV series… ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Fair enough
I jsut don't see how it is on par with other franchises which have done better and yet still failed in the MMO circus. It would take more than its background to get it through because as I said, we gamers a fickle bunch. |

Edited by: FreddyMac on 20/06/2009 13:04:53 Sorry Toonu, but there are so many things wroong in your post that its not even funny. Just like WoW had a huge built in fanbase from the start, WoD has quite a big fanbase itself. An rpg doesnt need to be talked about in all circles to be popular. Just its own. Hell, WoD is not even close to being considered "Horror" anyways. Many "niche" mmo's not only dont die, but keep on plugging away in the shadow of thier larger cousins. When are people going to realize that you dont need 11 million subscribers to be a success? As to Conan.....Conan had an assload of subscribers upon launch. It didnt lose them because nobody cared about Conan, it lost them because of heavvy use of instancing, poor itemization, and performance issues at launch. Warhammer.....again it has had its own issues that make it not fun and so people are leaving. Tabula Rasa didnt die because nobody is interested in a sci-fi mmo lol. That is such a sweeping, generalized statement that I dont even know where to begin. It would be like saying that when Eve came out and only had a few thousand players, that no one was interested in an internet spaceship game...which we can clearly see now, that wasnt the case. Matrix Online had very serious issues right from launch, including the sale of Matrix Online from its maker to SOE a few months after launch. It was shoved out the door early, and was released after the hype from the 1st movie had died out and the 2nd and 3rd movies were showing dismal numbers. Star Wars Galaxies was very popular in its day, and as Im sure you know, was only wrecked after the NGE from SOE. And yes its dying now....its like 7 years old and is MORE than showing its age. So is EQ1 but EQ! still brings in quite a bit of cash. All that this shows is that having a built in fanbase is good enough to bring in the initial subscription numbers, but if your game isnt fun to play or has performance issues and whatnot, then people will leave. People dont want to pay for or play a game that isnt fun, bottom line. People will try out WoD, both fans of WoD and newbs alike. If its fun and works reasonably well, they will stay. if its not they will leave. EDIT:Sorry to Toonu and anyone that is gonna be tortured by reading this wall of text. For some reason the forums wont accept my paragraphing. When I actually post the post, it turns it into a giant wall of text. Sorry guys :( |

Yea but I was just comparing WoD to hugely successful franchise's that are pretty well established, just to debunk the "wod is hugely successful" rap from the other guy.
And I didn't compare any of the MMOs to WoW. Because WoW beats all MMOs in all fields because its subscriber base more than speaks for itself and would be a bit silly to mention.
Also my post started off with "..full of assumption" so I covered my ass a little.
To be successful it only needs to stand on it's own legs for a long period of time and gather the revenue to cover all costs and return a profit to it's parent company and then it's investors. Otherwise it is a flop and will obviously die.
I can't see another MMO unless it is very very unique, pitching a tent up and hanging around for the long term. What will WoD offer the market that we don't allready have from trusted brands?

Edited by: TooNu on 20/06/2009 13:13:31 Oh, and WoW became a hugely successful franchise becasue Blizzard work their asses off to release a product until they are happy with it. WoW ticked all the boxes at the time and beat all other MMOs to the revenue because it did it all correctly. A game for the masses to enjoy.
Edit: Despite my last post, not comparing MMOs today to WoW is also quite silly.

The thing I haven't seen people point out here is the insane amount of griefing that's going to be possible.
Think about it. The target demographic is the Anne Rice-reading cat lady demographic. Oh, and teenage girls who read the Twilight series.
Nubile teenage girls. But I digress...
If you're into martinis made with tears instead of vermouth, like I am, I'm thinking WOD is going to be the game. I'm going to get in on it as soon as possible. |

Should take a quick poll:
How many people heard of the WOD IP before ccp? How many actually knew what it involved?
I had to look it up to see what is was about. And someone else else mentioned it....vampires current demographic is 12-19 year old girls, (wtf is the allure of vampires?) or the yet to discover they are gay 14-18 emo kids.
Not the 16-30 avg dude that really shells out their disposable income. However I digress you have to wait and see how the game turns out, and what it's going to focus on. _________________________ HATERS!!!!

…it also includes a crapton of 16-30 avg dudes that played it during the last 20-or-so years when they were the right age to hit on said 12-19 year old girls.
That said, yes, it's perhaps not as universally appealing an IP as, say, WoW, but I have no doubt that the market is there. In my circle of friends, alone, I know of 50-60 ppl who are eagerly anticipating WoD sine they've been into that IP for ages, and who have been introduced to the MMO concept through WoW but grown slightly tired with the shallowness of it…
…so it can go either way — very much depending on the execution — but it will not be for want of potential customers. |

o/ Read the books at Borders. WoD is a fantastic setting just from the novelty of requiring you to take a vice, and having to think more about NOT using your powers as they increase. |

the WoD mmo is doomed to be unsuccessfull because people will mistake it for WoW all the time.
they need a new name/acronym for it.

I just read up a little bit on the WoD stuff and it sounds pretty interesting. Mixed with the fact that I think CCP knows what they're doing (skill based, not level based games), I think this could be a pretty fun game. Maybe it will at least start off like eve did, kind of low key, but then as it grows in content it may have the same increasing subscriber curve that eve has.
I've thought about what it would be like to have a fantasy-esk MMO done eve style and I think it has a lot of potential. I have faith that CCP isnt just trying to tap into the WoW market share but is actually trying to make a decent game too.
But if they want to release that FPS as an eve expansion into planetary combat I'd be okay with that too

World of Darkness is actually quite big, it's just big among an other kind of nerds. It's big among the paper and pen roleplayers, and among live action role players. Sure the market for paper and pen rpgs are **** compared to how it was during the early 90s but I still think there's a lot of people they can lure over. Or rather, lure out. Because emos and goths can't play WoW, it's way to happy and colourful.
And as mentioned before, all the chicks who dig Twilligt and True Blood and those will squeal of happiness.

My guess is that they are polishing ambulance and station walking , because those are already completed .
Next year a lot of very good games will be released so ccp is reserving their joker card expansions to be spammed exactly at that time .
This explains why the bug/fixes game balances / dev replies to forums have sucked hard for the last 2 years . And especialy the last 6 months .
Remember in previous patches , they had store fronts ready and working but they have pulled it back .
Here is the list of products i expect to be spammed on us by ccp.
-Atmospheric flight -Station walking -Ambulance -Store fronts
As well as promising for t3 battleships and t3 battlecruisers for the next upcomming patches, which will be 2010 summer .
While this is all cool , the few things which are bothering me are ; -They will remove shader 2.0 support , which already holds me to invest any more into eve. -They will continue to work on for more new content to spam and completely forget & ignore the necessary fixes for game balance / bugs / interface / as usual .
My 2 cents

I'm hoping fora version of Eve that isnt still riddled with bugs, lag, poor and outdated documentation and poor game mechanics. Maybe it will have a forum that works, no half baked expansions that are left to rot, no quarterly reports that come out every 6 months and employees that fix exploits when they are are reported. |
