I just launched a new site: http://www.eveiverse.com/
It contains a nice items database right now, more features coming later. It's written in Ruby on Rails.
Let me know what you think.

Nice use of AJAX.
What are some of your planned features? |

What's there now:
My philosophy is to try to be the best there is at simple things, before I move on to more complicated things. For example:
- perform full description searches, not just searching by an item name
- list everything that can be made from an item
- list all the charges that fit into a module
- list all the items that are enabled from training a skill
- and more...
What could be planned for the future:
There are a variety of things that can be built on top of a good items database, it's a great infrastrucure thing to have first. Some possible future ideas include (no promises):
- maps
- logins and user data
- skill trainings (or better yet, how about an actual goal planner)
- ship fittings
- asset manager
Many of these have already been done, and some have even been done really well, but there are still ways that they could be done better. Doing a better items database first just proves my point.

AJAX is the spawn of the Devil.
That said, it looks good. I personally don't like your fades, but that's because the P.O.S. workstation I'm viewing it from has a crippled display system that doesn't like animation very much.
EDIT: I can type! Really! I swear! --

hehe.. I tried to make the animation reasonably fast and unobtrusive, to annoy people as little as possible in situations such as yours.. I might have succeeded since you complimented it anyway :) |

Looks good, but I'd suggest that you should use the unofficial datadump (see the sticky) to get full reprocessing (you call it recycling?) and refining information, the official dump is missing a lot of information in that regard.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check into full reprocessing. I had noticed it didn't look quite right, but hadn't taken the time to figure out why yet...

Might I suggest adding an item compare feature. It would be really nifty if it automatically highlighted the greater(est) value among the items you compare. So if you compare two ships, for example, the greater hull strength number would be made bold or something eye grabbing compared to the other.

Well done. I like the makes tab on everything, helpful for finding out something could be used for at times.
My only suggestion would be able to make partial searches: I can search for "circuit" and get all the items with that, but I can't search for "trit" and get all the items with that in it.

I've realized that comparing is something a lot of people are most likely to want to do, so a really good comparison tool would benefit a lot of people. Here's an article about it: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20010415.html So I'd say this is higher priority than any other potential future features I mentioned above, because it falls under the category of "making the best items database out there first."
In the past two days, a pretty large percentage of the searches have been for incomplete words, abbreviations, typos, etc, according to site logs. Of course people can easily refine their searches and they do, but even google has that little "did you mean xyz" thing at the top of their search results, so people have come to expect this.
I'd also like to highlight the words found on the page at some point too.

I've deployed a small update to the site: * Fixed minor database inconsistencies that were causing rare errors (probably nobody noticed yet anyway) * IGB version of the site now works (a caching issue had broken it, that wasn't caught in development and staging, hrrm) * Google should index the site better, after a few days when it updates...

I just deployed an update: searching is improved. It now matches your search terms in multiple ways, and prioritizes results based on: 1. first: exact word matches 2. same word stem as a word you entered 3. word that begins with the text you entered 4. and last, word that sounds like the word you entered
So you no longer have to type out "zydrine" or "dysprosium" just typing "zyd" or "dys" is enough.
This does help you with some typos, but I'm not satisfied in that department, of course, there are still ways that could be improved.
Note it still doesn't understand common abbreviations, like "dcu" but you can type "dam con" and get 13 different types of damage controls listed first... followed by other items that have words in the titles or descriptions that start with or sound similar to "dam" and "con" of course

Very good items database indeed, I think you are on the right track to make it the best one out there. I especially like the cross links for charges and launchers and the like.
The only thing I was missing was actually an about page :P -- Read the captain's log at eve.aeonoftime.com The solo player's corporation - Syrkos Technologies |

Yes, a linky back to home page is missing too I found, not that there's anything that useful there to review once you get into the site right now, so not too many may miss it yet. History/changes is missing currently too, though news is sort of on the home page. Basic navigation elements of this type will definitely get an overhaul when I need to add new major features to it that don't fit in the current "just a simple items database" information architecture, perhaps sooner, already have some ideas.

The site has been updated: * all the ore & ice, and mineral items show refining amounts and how they relate to each other. * reactions now show with the item they produce, just as blueprints did before * reactions integrate with the production relationships on the side "materials" and "makes" tabs, making it easy to walk up and down the tree to see what makes what, or what comes from what. * "recycling" tab was renamed to "reprocessing"

the site has been updated: * ajax has been improved, using the hash method just like gmail uses. You can now bookmark, use back and forward buttons in your browser, and reload any page, and it will work. * Apoc 1.3.1 database update. Took a little extra time to upgrade databases since the dump switched from 2005 to 2008, but should be worth it in the long run I hope :)

Edited by: Celebrain on 14/07/2009 17:12:42 The site has been updated: * wormhole data added! (I noticed google was sending me a lot of clicks on wormhole items, so I researched that and added the details mentioned elsewhere on these forums) * searching vastly improved: non-public items now are indexed, result ranking improved * many other minor small tweaks

Extremely nice. I think yours is the only site there is that shows the material relationships in both directions? 10 of 10 already

@tari: thanks for the compliment! As far as I know you are correct.
New release details: * Now includes Apocrypha 1.5 data, which was released simultaneously with CCP's Apocrypha 1.5 patch. * With one click you can add eveiverse.com to your browser's list of search engines in FF2+, IE7+, and Chrome. * Several other internal optimizations

New release: * fixed broken IGB version for certain links, am working on better integration testing to avoid that in future * added alchemy relationships * added race attribute to moon mats that only make a certain race of items * drill down expandable lists for required/enabled and materials/makes sidebars (this was a big change) * "packaged volume" data added for ships and containers * many many other minor improvements and fixes

Hehe, thanks for the bump Rilwar! I can only hope the explanation is the site doesn't have enough "problems" or isn't "hard" enough to use (i.e. doesn't cause enough questions to be posted) to keep it on page one! :)
Next version is still cooking, there will be certificates and more stuff! :)

Very nicely done. The materials requirement viewer is very useful...and works both ways.
On another note, it seems that CCP actually thought about an anti-cloaking device...

I'm too lazy to look for URL, but there's some really entertaining ones. Like char bonii.. one particular one sticking in memory is "player ejects capsule if structure damage >25%" -------------------------------------------------

Yes, it is interesting to look at the non-functional data in the data dump sometimes, to see what interesting ideas CCP has had but hasn't implemented. Some of it is just simple game balancing, and some of it is reserved for future content I would guess. And some of it may just be abandoned ideas.
New release: * certificates and their descriptions and relationships, including recommended ship/cert ones * character attributes and their descriptions and relationships * added bloodlines and ancestries and starter ships to race screens (ever wanted more info about those mysterious Jovians?) * added all the above to the search engine * began various refactorings to reduce repetition internally in the code between all these new areas and the old ones (not complete yet)
This release shows that this site is turning into more than just an "items database" because it's showing things that aren't tangible in-game "items" anymore. There are several areas where minor things could be improved and a few additional relationships could be shown, layouts, navigation, and information architecture could be improved, etc, but I had to release what has been done now because it's so useful, especially the certificate stuff.
Note: to get at the new "certificates" feature, remember that certs are not tangible items that float in space or exist in your hangar or cargo hold, so you cannot get to them in the usual way by looking under an item category or group. You can get to them by searching for them, or by choosing "certificates" from the pulldown on the left under the browse section. They also do show up in certain items by reference too. For example, if training a skill gives you the ability to obtain a cert, it shows that under the skill item too in the "enables" right hand sidebar. At some point I intend to rearrange the information architecture of the site to make this a little clearer to people who don't already understand this type of distinction between the tables in the data dump! In other words I intend make the site navigation a bit more logical instead of technical :P

Updated with Dominion data. Also now shows T2 and T3 colored triangles on the corner of images...
The new table layout in Dominion begs some more changes to how I display and format my data, which I haven't completed yet, but I had to get out what I have now, because the new game version is out! :P So more improvements will come.

The site has moved to a better web server. More up to date, faster, more stable, etc... Supports http compression now, for example... Please note that it could take some time for everyone to get the DNS update, so it's possible you could see the old site during the next couple hours, but most of you will see the new one right away.
As an aside, it now shows a version number and date in the footer. For example, right now it shows "1.0.12.298-2010.01.17" which means I've done 13 different 1.0.x minor releases since I started the site, during which I did 298 total commits to my version control system, and the last update was deployed on the 17th of January, eve time / GMT. This can give the frequent visitor some sense of how often the site is updated (I'd say about twice a month).
