Been playing a few years now and I would like to ask for opions on the different race battleships. I can fly all of them to a fairly good standard. but im interested in your thoughts.
Long range sniper......my choice Rokh/Abbadon.......you ?
close range dps........ blaster/mega..........?
close range bruiser.....typhoon/neut/torps......?

If your enemy is tackled a raven can hit 220km out, 100% hit chance, just takes a long time for your missiles to get there.

Just asking why do people rate the geddon ahead of the Abaddon as a close range bruiser? |

Cost. The Armageddon does about the same (very slightly more, depending on exact fits) dps, has a pretty good HP buffer, and is a tier-1 BB vs. the tier-3 Abaddon. Since you bring battleships to gang fights where your awesome dps ship is likely to get primaried, many people prefer not to pay significantly more ISK for a fairly small improvement in performance. -----------

The phoon is exceptional close range and will tear a geddon a new one. Unfortunately the geddon only requires half the sp an effective phoon does which is why geddon > phoon (unless you got the uber skills ). |

I could crosstrain for the geddon before I got the phoon up to a decent level, if my alliance needed a BS that's what i'd do. I wouldn't go, "yeah just wait a year so I can get this typhoon up to a decent level". In the end the typhoon is just incredibly inpractical. |

People like to forget that mini dread pilots have the skills for it and there's not exactly a shortage of those so like i said, geddon > phoon unless you have the skills.

Just curious, but I don't see the Hyperion mentioned ever. Is this a viable close range DPS ship, or is it considered broken?

- T2 Heavy Drones/Sentry : Both ships benefit equally
- T2 Large guns : Both ships benefit, Gueddon more so because Scorch is better than Barrage at Scorch range, Minmatar get to skip the gun cap use skill, I would say no advantage (but T2 Large lasers also open you t2 large beams which are loads better than t2 large arty)
- T2 Armor Tanking : both ships need it, the Gueddon needing compensation skills more than the Typhoon since almost enevr using hardeners (CPU issue, need to fit 3 heatsinks) while the Typhoon often fits hardeners and only one damage mod, advantage Typhoon
- Torps : pretty easy train, T2 siege launchers get you in huge CPU woes on a Phoon so you can as well eat the 5% less damage and stay with torps 4 as most of the time you'll fit arbalest launchers. Support skills are pretty easy as torps are not guided missiles, so you don't need training Guided Missile precision. Advantage Gueddon, but a very decent level in torps is like 2 millions sp in missiles.
- Misc stuff : Typhoon more agile, faster, one more mid slot, way more versatile in many way, damage unaffected by neutralizers
The only real difference in skill training between the two ships is torps, and no you cannot crosstrain Amarr faster than you can spec in the Phoon, if you got decent Minmatar skills to start with.

Right so 2mil more SP aside (opinion varies on how irritating that is to train), yes it's true that guided missile precision is unneeded. However this works the other way; torps have a pretty horrible explosion radius which is pretty much unfixable through skills. So you're lobbing torps at short range at big targets only, while the geddon is happily blasting away at 2-3x the range and even hitting smaller stuff a hell of a lot better than the phoon can.
Quote: Typhoon more agile, faster
You seem to be talking about an armour tanked one here, and that combined with the fact it's a battleship makes the speed advantage pretty much void. Not to mention the Geddon is well capable of hitting out to 45km with scorch straight off, which means while the phoon is using it's oh-so-uber speed to get into range, the geddon is blasting away, and in its optimal.
Now I mention optimal for a very specific reason: namely that the Typhoon is an EFT warrior dream. Half its weapons only hit big targets, the other half fire well into falloff. The geddon is firing into optimal, with a uniform weapon loadout, and a wider range of things it can hit accurately. This means while neither ship will likely reach its "EFT dps" (as resistances need to be factored in) the geddon will still be getting close to that far more consistantly than the lolsplitweapon can.
You argued that the gap in terms of SP is smaller than he made out, which is fairly accurate - but the end results still favour the Geddon. Now if the Typhoon was faster to train it might be worth it, but otherwise bring on the mega pulses. |

The phoon only becomes good when you get the maximum you can out of it with the no damage mods set up which requires pretty much max skills in about every area to get it up to that level. Also it has split weapons which just suck on every ship, (and it appears on quite a few), and because it uses split weapons it uses 2 bonuses up on two seperate weapons which is a waste of a bonus which could be used to make it generally better at either tank or dps, (just like how the geddon focuses on lasers)
Finally what little agility and speed boost the phoon gets, while on paper is pretty good, in action it really isnt going to help since those things just matter a whole lot less on battleships. |

It's damn useful to reapproach a gate, get in RR range of a mate...

The average BS engagement (when not sniper) is mostly gate/station fights with RR where people are well within 20km. The 45km range is mostly an anti support option, for which there are better ships than BS.

Well an useful Typhoon for gangs with e.g. torps/neut/rr is a pretty fast train, and a pretty fast cross train for say a Raven pilot needing an armor RR alternative.
I was mostly addressing the point that the Typhoon is so hard to train for, it's exactly as any other BS (well Caldari can skip heavy drones) + torps which are arguably a pretty fast train.

I find the phoon best when ur making an adhoc gang
the usually armor tank and 4 torps, and u have 4 highs left need reps? slap 2 rr , 2 nos/cap need dps? fit 4 guns need neuts? fit 4 neuts, (size depends on other fitted mod)
and the phoon truly shine when you're living inside a wormhole POS with limited cargo space, or moving around with an Orca, u can fit it for almost every scenario, RR, Cap transfer, full dps, solo BS for class 3 wh, with salvager, probe, cloak..
I think max skilled neut+torp phoon is the only ship that can solo a Marauder. 900+dps with 3 heavy neuts. And room left for 5 med jamming drones if thing got nasty
once you go phoon, ur never come back. (I wish that rhymes ) |

Is the Hyperion just unsuited for close range DPS? Can anyone tell me why?
Just wondering, I've played with some fits in EFT but I never see them recommended.

Because the Abaddon out-ganks it in virtually all real-world scenarios. Its tiny advantage in EFT damage disappears entirely once tracking and range are considered.
Meanwhile against battleships the Raven (or CNR, which is expensive, but has the highest raw dps in the game) does the same thing, but it trades the ability to insta-pop low-transversal smaller ships for zero close-range blind spot and dual neuts. |

hyperion can do an awesome job in 1v1 situations on test server, but like all the others ships with active tanking bonus is outperformed by ships with bonus useful for passive tanking.
not to mention the laser that do too much dps for the range they can get and this make them the best weapon to use for the majority of engagement. |
