I really need a labslot for research, and given teh current state of labs it's either keep searching and hope I get lucky, or buy one. The problem with buying is the risk of getting scammed. I know I can't eliminate the risk of a scam, since not only has CCP failed to provide enough labslots for the player base they have failed to provide any way to transfer labs securely. But what steps can I take to minimize the risk of being cheated of my hard earned isk?

be sure of who your trading with i've done trades on lab slots before and all i can suggest is know who it is what corp and make sure its not an alt

You could always use a trusted 3rd part act as an escrow agent of sorts.
That is the basis of the whole escrow concept of sorts. heck out the web RL example to read more about what escrowing is and how to to meiator trades.-

To confirm that they actually have a lab slot u could ask for a screenshot of their lab slot with the station + system name visible etc. Or alternatively bring along a cheap bpo and ask them to make a 1 run copy of it.

Generally speaking:
1) Ask for a reference... sometimes helps.
2) 50% upfront and 50% after the transaction
3) Don't deal with new characters.
4) If it's someone in a corp, with little time in the corp. Speak to the CEO of the corp before completing the transaction. I got burned by someone who just joined a corp with an 'official' sounding title who was going to sell me 2 corp lab slots. The money got refunded to me with the application of a little... pressure.
5) When in doubt ask around the trade channels about a person. If you're dealing with someone with a long STABLE employment reccord odds are they've got a reputation for themselves trading.
