Hi guys, I'm just wondering why exactly I have to wait 30 seconds to switch between ships after I dock. It can be very frustrating when I'm trying to get into my salvage boat after I've completed a mission.
Also, why does it take so long to actually get out into space after clicking the undock button? The loading bar can take 20 seconds or more sometimes. Is this by design or is it my computer?
Thanks.

I think it's by design. The delay is about the same on any computer. Session changes take about 30 seconds. I think there are a combination of reasons:
1) covering the server's slowness. if sometimes the system loaded in 5 seconds, sometimes in 20, people would get upset and complain about the laggy times of day. if everybody waits 30 seconds every time, nobody notices.
2) preventing annoying PVP maneuvers. imagine if you could dock, switch ships, undock, redock, switch again, and so on, in a matter of a few seconds. it would screw with PVP around stations in a pretty unrealistic and obnoxious way. the delay is to make you feel like you're really doing something in the game world.

Edited by: Drakarin on 30/06/2009 23:52:12 Why not disallow docking while in combat?
Unless it's your own station, in which case only adding the timer after you dock and have been in combat. I see no reason to ALWAYS have it even when you're just in high sec doing missions.

They do disallow docking while in combat.
Don't remember why they put up the "changing ships" session timer. There's no timer that prevents you from undocking instantly, so perhaps they wanted to keep people from instantly switching ships when involved in PVP.

By design. 30 seconds timer when you have a session change will not let you have another session change.
A session change can be triggered by many events: logging in, docking, undocking, ejecting/leaving a ship (including when the ship explodes), entering a ship, clone-jumping, joining a fleet, leaving a fleet, changing your position in the fleet tree, jumping through a gate, a bridge etc. etc.
It does happen, for example, when you warp from a gate to a very nearby gate on an agile and fast ship (like a frigate or ceptor) that you cannot jump because the timer is still counting for the previous jump.
Please, spend 1 minute of your time and check this out

actually i find the timer useful, i can't count the time i undock with an unfit ship or without taking that model or the ship i wanted. the abort button Had saved me allot of time , not as much as it wasted but it saved me the frustration and that's worth allot more than the time i lost.(even if u don't count the time i saved)

Besides the PvP issue for docking, why on earth do they have these annoying and arbitrary limitations?

Not to long ago a session change could get you stuck. The session timer was helping with that problem to a degree. Why it wasn't removed after all those bugs where fixed only the gods know.

Does it really have to be 30 seconds though? That's a long time to wait just to change ships!

No, I mean does it really have to be 30 seconds? Can't they change it to like, 10? Or 15? That still gives a buffer zone for the server without being too annoying for us.

Why should they? There are very important and game breaking game mechanic reasons why its 30 seconds as already explained. You could always post on the suggestions forum and they will read it.

You may have noticed that while you can instantly press undock it still takes as long as the 30 seconds are over, while undocking would've been faster on other occasion.
