Asking this here rather than on the diablo 3 forums because I'm not quite sure if most people over there will know what I mean with multiplayer.
I've played d1+2, but never tried multiplayer (well - d2 on a LAN party when it was new), now got d3 and it's an okay game - simple Hack'n Slay grind, nice athmosphere and the hardcore mode even makes it somewhat suspenseful - I enjoy the games singleplayer thus far.
Of course I noticed that multiplayer seems to be rather popular, but so far (ok - only got the game yesterday) I just can't get myself to join another persons game or open mine up, simply because I just can't see the point in doing it.
If I open up my game to the public, I'll probably get some 16 year old moron running around me constantly babbling about how awesome his 'toon' (hate that word) is and I can't even kill him for that.
The only thing I could think of so far is to create a hardcore character, join public hardcore games and start pulling all the aggro in large maps, leading a giant mob to the other guy in the game hoping they kill him after I died (or even better: try to make it out alive and have them kill the other guy).
So honest question: Where's the fun in playing multiplayer in d3 or has eve spoiled me beyond ever finding any sense in it? You know... morons. |

The sense isn't found in the player's side of things. Blizzard is winning at the gaming industry on all levels because they understand the simple fact that so many just can't grasp: Population begets more population.
They won at RTS because of mods and things that blew up their game, and watched Valve have similar success and they LEARNED. WoW didn't win the early MMO race because it was awesome, it won because they handed out free trials, free first 30 days, and let people download the client when everyone else at that time was a box on a shelf that cost $40 + $15 for the first month.
So. D3 is competing harshly with Torchlight in the eyes of fans and review sites, and there is the little known Path of Exile also lurking and I hear it's shaping up nicely... what are they going to do?
They link it to WoW's population with the annual pass deal which saves money on a year sub to WoW plus gets free D3, and... wait for it...
wait for it...
They make all their players play online. Even if all you do is play solo, you will be +1 on a stats board somewhere, and lets be honest if you're online anyway you're going to fool with the AH and probably chat some. *Charges Twilight fans with Ka-bar* -Surfin's PlunderBunny LIIIIIIIIIIINNEEEEE PIIIEEEECCCCEEE!!!!!!! -Taedrin Using relativity to irrational numbers is smart -rodyas I no longer believe we landed on the moon. -Atticus Fynch

I wish there was a offline singleplayer, I get spikes sometimes that warps me all over the place and fighting a boss with that is really hard. |

For me the point is playing with my real life mates.
3 of us saved playing till this weekend, started fresh charachters and just completed the game in a 19 hours stint which frankly was awesome. We are all over 30 years old and remember D1 and D2 fondly and basically set up our gaming systems round one friends house and had a pseudo LAN party.
Well worth booking the holiday.
Now.. as for multi-player with strangers? I can't imagine ever bothering. I'd play with corp mates from EVE or clan/guild mates from other gaming communities but not the masses in general chat D3...... *shudders*
On a side note, the 3 of us had a blast. none of us had played, we'd not read up on the game and knew nothing about its storyline. EPIC geek weekend for a group of blokes who rarely get to geek like the old days any more. CURSE YOU REAL LIFE RESPONSIBILITY IN OLDER AGE! |

I have played D2 on battlenet from time to time. Playing with strangers is usually about feeling good about helping others. You look and see someone asking for help completing a specific quest, so you join their game and help them. Life is short and dinner time is chancy Eat desert first! |

Yeah - I can imagine that's fun - guess I'll ask some of my mates who got the game and give that a try - I was rather wondering about public multiplayer, because I couldn't possibly imagine how that would be done in a fun way. You know... morons. |

This, pretty much. I've played in public games a few times and it is kind of boring. Despite what the advertisements say, difficulty plummets when you add more people to a game simply because you get the range + tank + DPS thing going and you just slaughter. Multiplayer difficulty doesn't scale well imo.
Then again, while the game IS fun, a side note is that the difficulty and the drops are broken. Normal difficulty is EASY MODE. I've beaten it all the way through, and it's just not difficult at all until you get to act IV. In addition to that, for some reason I'm level 36 and I keep getting level 27 drops everywhere I go. Maddening. I have to use the auction house to buy nearly all of my gear because of it.
Other than that, it's a pretty good game. |

It's mildly fun, but not nearly as cool as I expected.
Titan Quest's MP was far better. It's time to put an end to CCP's war on piracy. Fight your own battles and stop asking CCP to do it for you. |

I only play it in multiplayer with RL friends, we are about 15 on the ventrilo, so there's always people online to form up a group with and go...or just join in on the fly.
I did try play it solo on release, but that was not even close to the experience when you play with people you know.
I would not do a random open game to anyone though, I fear the wow playerbase that might have dipped into D3.
So far the game have been a blast, all those little moments when someone goes "omg, *uck RUN!!" and "god that pucker HURT!" The panic when things go south in an instant, the experience when you manage to beat a pack of elite mobs that killed you over and over for about 20 times and suddenly everything flows like clockwork.
The random stats on gear that drops are pretty ******** though, it's waaaay too random
Other then that, game of the year reward incoming. May 15 2012 |

Just as blizzard intended.
Its amazing how many people can put up with something like that and still call it a good game. |

Probably because... it's a good game...
It's hillariously fun, and the only ARPG that has ever actually challenged anyone with things like spinning lasers, real boss battles, and mobs you must counter/CC/kite.
ProTip: Ignore hate unless people post a youtube video of themselves playing. You will inevitably find they crash headlong into mobs they can't handle and try to just melee them, or stand still and DPS them down like it was an MMORPG fight. Then they get mad when they die.
In the game you can use ranged skills that do fantastic damage on both melee classes, all classes have multiple CC and multiple Defense skills, and it's an ARPG so you're supposed to dodge a lot of what's coming at you. The squeaky wheel D2 hammerdin community doesn't get that yet and are all still arguing about items and stats and crying over the dead corpse of the bad skill system from a decade ago.

If it wasnt for my relatives, friends, and eve friends, i probably wouldnt get it. It is really fun playing with someone you know. Sure i made five characters and have not entered act III yet, and a little tedious, but still fun. If it wasnt for running a new corp, i would be in hell mode or higher by now :s
