Edited by: Ulverious on 22/09/2004 04:42:37 Edited by: Ulverious on 22/09/2004 04:42:15 Well IÆm the non action oriented kind of player and really enjoyed the quiet pace of the game. I stayed in high security space making enough money for a complete set of +3 implants.
Some guy weÆve never heard about declare with his one-man corp and pod kills me in high sec space for no reason. I was thinking about filing a ôgriferö partition but since corp wars are legal I assume he didnÆt violated the rules. In any case, just a game right
It was fun the first time It will frankly seem to much like work the second since a new set of +3 implants means something like 50+ hours mining.

Well I rather liked the no hassle zen-like flying around in high sec space. I appreciate other players like a different play style and thatÆs fine.
It just seems I canÆt get to play the kind of game I like in high sec space so why not try RL instead?
OH the guy who pod-killed me is Kasper. If he sees this I must confess IÆm slightly curious as to why he killed me. ItÆs not as if he got any loot worth taking and I never heard about him or is corp before.

You are quite right (All of you)
Should have stayed in the noob corp but canÆt rejoin it. And the game is not for me if it mandates and action oriented play style.
Also some people donÆt mind having to play 100 hours to get back were they started and I fully respect that û just not my character
Still donÆt really understand why he did it though û it gained him nothing.

But since IÆve canceled my account anyway doesnÆt really matter. IÆm taking a Farwell tour of 0.0 spaces in a hauler just æcause I can now.
After all what can anyone do to me now, right? IÆve already lost everything.
A weird experience by the way. Meet a couple of human rats and the all refuse to kill me û feel it wrong to take advantage of suicidal plot apparently. One guy actually added my killer to his hit list. Told me a ôrealö PVP pirate would never stoop to murder an unarmed freighter in .9 spaces
Got home with a full load of Dark Ocher I mined in unarmed shops û go figure.
Next up û a visit to the works badass stations in 0.0.

Really nice of you to care.
Well I could buy the whole lot back for around $120 on e-bay but that would kind of feel like cheating and, while I can certainly afford it, it would make me feel like an addict.
I mean arenÆt you kind of obsessed if you go and do that sort of thing. I like gaming but if you go down that road you are not really playing the game and might end up spending real money for what is essentially nothing.
I send an eve mail to my killer and didnÆt get a reply û IÆm kind of disappointed. I would have liked to know his reasons.

lol ? That is what piracy is !
Well I kinda always thought piracy was about making money. Killing a ship for the cargo makes sense. Ransoming he pilot might make sense to û both happened with RL piracy. But blowing up a sip and killing a pilot for a haul of worthless ore just makes no sense to me. He couldnÆt even carry it away

Edited by: Ulverious on 22/09/2004 17:22:53 No intention to flame the game. IÆd have no problem recommending it to others. I rather enjoyed it although corp. wars does seem a potential serious exploit as my experience showed.
I am going to let my account run out at the end of the current subscription period. Amazingly enough I have survived playing around several hours in .0 space in my unarmed hauler trying to get killed
I actually had a blast.
I Jump into 0.0 space and is promptly stopped by NORAD fleet command. ôWe have reason to suspect spies are infiltrating this gate. Show valid reason for entry or be fired uponö
I explained I am on a suicide tour of 0.0 space. They admitted that the NORAD charter was unspecific as to whether that constituted a valid reason. We had a nice chat and they decided a depressed suicidal deserved the chance to see a bit more of .0 space and issued me a visa.
I fly on deeper into 0.0 space and encounter a horde of badass player pirates. They lock me and I prepare to die. There is an unusually long pause while I wait for the inevitable ransom demand. Kind of looking forward to telling those pirate scum just were they can stick their demands. I even prepare an epic statement in advance.
The demand never comes.
I wait for the lethal barrage of missiles
Never comes either.
What does come over the local communication is the following: ôOK, this has to be some sort of insurance scam?ö
Bit of an anticlimax really. Once again I explain my suicide tour of the galaxy concept and my reasons. Others have done something similar the point out, but why a hauler? Well it seems right for sightseeing. The slow pace gives me time to, you know, sightsee.
They decide thatÆs just crazy enough to make sense. The wish me I good death and fly on.
Hmm û this final death isnÆt really working out for me.
It turns out my hauler is equipped with a mining lasers. Well makes sense since IÆd used it for afk mining. Anyway, I jump into the middle of the nearest asteroid field and start mining. Man, rich pickings for a .5+ care bear. Ninja miners show up. They pretty much decide IÆm clinical insane. Not less so when I offer to haul their stuff back to empire space unescorted. ThatÆs when I get nicknamed ôKamikaze freight serviceö They fill up the hull and I fly off back toward empire space.
Badass human pirates show up. ôGive us 5 million or weÆllàà.Oh itÆs you again.ö
I fly on.
NPC battleship shows up. Now there is a baddy you canÆt argue with. Time to die.
Not. Badass pirate warp in and blow up NPC rats. ôAt last we get paid for thoseö they point out.
NORAD fleet command warp in. Deploy for battle andà.
.ôExcuse us but arenÆt you badass pirates? You are supposed to pry on helpless civilian shipping - not protect itö
ôThatÆs such a stereotype. Just why we reject conventional moralityö
Instead of fighting they engage in a discussion of ethics while they escort me out of 0.0 space.
I land back were I started feeling very confused and tell the amazed miners that their freight has safely arrived.
Thinking of running a Kamikaze hauler service for ninja miners for a few days until I run out of haulers. I almost had enough fun to consider not cancling
ItÆs just that at this point in the game the loss of 110 million ISK feels like such a huge setback that trying to climb back up seems more like a work then play.
Anyway I think itÆs rather healthy to remind myself that if I get depressed over a setback in a game IÆm taking it way to seriously. I think IÆll be playing RL for awhile. It does have quite a lot to offer IÆm sure you have all read the review at http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot/features/all/gamespotting/071103minusworld/1.html
I think it is still a fair review despite constant patching. (Smiley) And people tend to be more understanding if I moan about that then other games
Got to be careful about feeling suicidal there though

Please understand itÆs not that I died and lost my implants. ItÆs the way it happened. Had I gotten killed on an expedition into 0.0 spaces or solo mining in .3 I would have kept playing. You place your bets and you take your chances. If I gamble and do dangerous stuff I fully accept I lose sometimes. That is the way it is supposed to work otherwise the rewards would not be justified.
But if I can get murdered like that, essentially walking the street in a safe neighborhood, it just completely breaks my enjoyment.
I would consider it extremely luck to find all +3 implants for anything less then 100 mill ISK, say 20 days play at my rate and thatÆs if I work at it. Not worth it. There is just no satisfaction when you feel you have to put that sort of effort just getting back to where you were. I simply wouldnÆt enjoy the process. And if I donÆt then there really isenÆt any point. More fun playing RL û you have read the review right?
I could just buy the implants back on e-bay obviously, I could certainly afford it, but that would make me a sad obsessed loser. Always felt there was no point in playing if you cheat. I wouldnÆt be playing them game at all. I either enjoy playing or I donÆt play.
Makes sense really.

My point is precisely didnÆt want to risk anything since I knew very well I couldnÆt afford the cost of recovery from a podding. By staying in .6+ security space I genuinely thought I was playing it safe.

From the gracious lady in charge of the Merchant Marines/NOARD picket who first gruffly informs me that she canÆt guarantee may safety and reminds me that ôWe are NOARD û not your bloody bodyguardsö û only to rush in and save my ass as well as the assess of countless other newbie civilians again and again from our fumbling around, to the gentleman buccaneer who was genuinely distressed when he found out his victim was unarmed and insisted on escorting her lifpod safely out of the system.
I love the pirate who was outraged when his corpmate made a despairing remark about the appearance of a girl in local chat. As a newly arrived spectator I was somewhat surprised by his attitude and pointed out they were both trying to kill her at the time. The reply I got was the ôThat is no excuse to be rude to a ladyö
I seem to have been adopted as something of a mascot. Allthough I have to put up with the occasional snide remark along the lines of being a baby even the pirates have so far adobted a remarkable tolerant attitude to me.
A pleasant surprise.

Edited by: Ulverious on 25/09/2004 16:51:35 Well I’m staying after all – having so much fun in 0.0 space were that lack of implants seems an advantage more then anything else.
The deciding episode was this: I was hiding with a gang member from pirates in a belt. Eventually she got tired of waiting and asked the pirates to leave her alone for half an hour since she had to go help her childern make their Magic – the gathering deck. The reaction from the pirats was something like this:
“You are helping your kids make their magic deck? – I want you to be my mommy!!!”
Needlss to say no one touched her after that.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m having a lot of fun and as for me getting blown up is not much of a dettering anymore. In fact the only place were I have a shadow of a chance to recoupitade my losses is 0.0 space and, yes, the income is better, even when deducting the cost of replacing ships.
Anyway, the only time I’ve ever gotten podded is by that murding basterd in .9 space so who is to say it is more risky anywhy

Once again thanks guys. Really touched.
Been playing 2 months and closing on a billion? Can I get a job with whomever you are working for? What are you called ôThe Rich Kids?ö ôThe silver spoons?ö I bet your ship is named moneyspinner. Anyway, could you send me some sign-up info?
Yes I fully realize that I shouldnÆt use implants or fly expensive ships in 0.0 space. IÆm a new man. No longer Mr. Play It Safe, you are looking at Dangerman!!!!!!! Getting blown up in a cheap ship with no implants isnÆt really stressful at all since it doesnÆt hurt you more then the worth of a single haul of minerals. And of course being able to recklessly ignore danger does make for some nicer profits.
No danger of losing expensive named items û IÆm flying around armed with mining lasers II and basic mining drones. HavenÆt put any guns on my ship since I got murdered. In a couple of million skill points that may change of course
