I've got an itch to play something piratey at the moment, and there doesn't seem to be any over-the-counter treatment for it. It's been ages since I last yelled "Arrrr Jim Lad" and boarded a man o' war with a saber and a flintlock pistol, probably in Sid Meir's Pirates or Ascaron's "Pirates of the Caribbean". Are there any good offline piratey games worth picking up, or is PotBS worth paying for? Reviews seem mixed and critics reviews are rarely halpful, particularly compared with actual players. I shudder at the thought of getting an SoE game, but if it's any good I'd give it a go. Is there like an Eve guild on there or anything also? What are the RPG aspects of PotBS like in particular? Is it a grind (is that a dumb question?)? -------------

Edited by: Jin Nib on 03/07/2009 02:56:19 I quite enjoyed it while I played it, but that was beta and ages ago. The sea combat was pretty damn great if you ask me.
The land/boarding combat was meh. But that may have changed. Also you bought a ship and had skills that could improve your ship but they were in no way customizable, everyone was running around with the same things (ie no modules) but at the time I didn't realize this was a drawback and it was fun anyhow.
A nice thing is that little frigates had parts to play even with the big boys because the big 70 gun sloops were as slow as diarrhea rolling down a hill.
I would have subscribed except that during the last week or so the basically gave you infinite money and top level and I saw that there was no endgame to speak of so there was really no point to continue.
That one of my favorite parts in a game was done quite well so I spent allot of time with it, and that was character creation :p
I'd say try the trial and give it a go, its good looking and running around on land can get fun (the missions were as about as engaging as EVE's sadly, maybe a bit more so). Sailing around on sea was a blast. And many things may have been improved in the meantime.

Now for the main question that will turn me onto the game or not.
Can you bring other people onto your ship and have them control some cannons on your ship that are normally not controllable?
Cause if not then i will stick with POTC (That disney mmo, its actually quite fun). ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari

Not to my awarness, but remember I played it along time ago. You can be involved in teh same fight in different ships, or on land do missons and such together. REally the sea fighting mechnics are very good I thought so its almost worth it just for that (note: I havent played other wooden boat games so I dont have a basis of comparison to them, it's more that it came out and met/exceeded my expectations of what would be there).
Really the fighting can get very tactical when you have two or more players helping each other. Even killing npc ships is fun. Being on the same boat would not be nearly as fun.

Yup, I was in beta, lots of us explained to the devs that promising a whole lot of stuff and then simply not doing them, or dumbing them down into oblivion doesn't work.
Tried it once again later on, found that it hadn't changed and it was the still bland, non-inspirational crap it started out as.

It was fun when I played. But that was some time ago. PVP setups for ships etc share a lot of aspects of eve. The size of the ship the mods you use on it etc. Difference between potbs and eve besides the obvious is in potbs you can leave your ship to do land mishs. Soon I am sure that will change with eve.
And yea it would be awesome to bring yur friends with you on yur ship. But not a feature...

Edited by: Epegi Givo on 06/07/2009 14:53:37 finally decided to actually play the game yesterday.
And i was suprised, this game was actually FUN.
Ship combat is incredibly realistic.
And the land combat system also is a blast.
Annoyed about me being on a trial account though, they are quite severely limited in what they can do.
Only downside, you can't go running around your own ship :(. But this isn't too bad, because you can go running around other peoples ships when you board them.
Anyway, 2 thumbs up by me for POTBS, I can finally see why Sony hasn't gone out of business yet.. ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari
