I've just started flying an onyx recently, and I'm debating the advantages of a buffer Vs passive regen setups.
This is ONLY for use in 0.0, not lowsec gangs:
Originally I thought that a passive set up would be great for smallish hac gangs, but then I realised that shield power relays murder your cap regen. If you have a long warp, it takes a very long time to regain your cap. Same goes if for any reason you need a burst of MWD.
However, the advantage is that you can have a very nice 900-1000 dps tank. And works fine if you're just sitting there camping.
I can see how a passive regen one would be nice for small lowsec gangs, or even individual pvp (maybe) (or highsec warfare).....
On the other hand, a buffer tank gives you more cap regen, allowing you to not worry about long warps or multiple uses of the mwd within a short period. The buffer tank on my fitting is close to 100k with it easily hitting 110k ehp when in a gang with bonuses. Which, even though you don't have the regen, in a gang fight you'll probably last as long or even longer than the passive setup.
Also, you get the added advantage of being able to tank 2 Doomsdays (in the unlikely scenario that you encounter a titan or two in your roams) and you have the versatility of being able to use it to help lock down a system when your fleet is defending.
So I'm left with the question: Is a passive setup good for anything in general 0.0 use? Why would you NOT buffer tank an onyx in 0.0?

You're supposed to use PDU II not SPRs.

hmm - but that would seriously reduce the tank and I'm not putting shield rechargers in the mids...
but I guess you can't have everything..

I don't see a reason why fleet tackler Onyx couldn't fit SPR's... In small gangs that's awesome and cheap tank. In larger ones, PDU's for buffer is better since you will be dead anyway

In most cases for 0.0 you'll want extender rigs and shield buffer cap booster in med, 3SPR/1DC in low if you go after supercap(can drop the launchers) 3PDS/1DC in low if you work as a mobile bubble for med-large gang in 0.0 2 ballistic control, DC, PDS for PG in low if you're solo/small gang
_____________ I don't care what is nerfed, as long as it's not my "undock" button. |

on the onyx you can also get a quite good (better than passive 3x PDU 1x DCU + purger rigs) active shield tank.
580tanked/700overloaded.
food for thought.

Well PDU doesn't help against heavy neuts...cap is gone anyways...

I read that as 3-4 HACS and 1 HIC.
Thing is, if you in your small hac gang the focus isn't going to be on you but on the hacs, since you are probably deemed to be unkillable, and the dps from 4 hacs is nothing for a gang thats only a bit bigger than yours to get scared about.
So don't bother going for uber tank, just fit mwd, extenders, couple of invuls, extender rigs, and damage mods in lows.

sorry, I meant "smallish ships" i.e. 10-20 hacs/lights as opposed to a RR BS gang.

yep, this is similar to my buffer onyx fit (sorry I'm at work so don't have EFT with me.
I experimented with different combinations of extenders Vs hardners and I found that two extenders, two invulns and one [race specific weakest] hardener gave me more hit points than just filling up with extenders.
having said that, I've only flown caldari and we have crap base EM resists so sticking an EM hardner on there does wonders... not sure what it's like for mini

not really, cycle time on a heavy neut is really long, with added cap regen and proper cycle timing on your injector you can keep a focus point up with a lot on neuts on you.
imo if your in 0.0 always fit for titan/mom/carrier tackle unless your just station camping, being able to grab one when the opportunity comes up is priceless. catch one with a crap fit and you'll be slapping yourself as he warps away. small gang or not if you can hold em for a bit you can just jump in dreads to finish the job.

I like this setup, but I fit an extra WDFG on there. That way I have the bubble and the 30km uber-point. Without having to swap scripts.

Need a MWD to keep a bubble over a cloaker. That doesn't invalidate the fit, its just something worth thinking about.

lol afterburner lol missile launchers lol single WTFG lol carebear fit lol soporo
If you're in a HIC, your job is to tackle. You want Nos to maintain cap, MWD to maintain range and multiple WTFG. And maybe a smartbomb to kill drones. If you're interested in anything other than tackling, then you've brought the wrong ship. |

Then onyx with high passive regen. I'd say, but I only fly my HICs in small gangs (as in with low numbers).
Sorry for not understanding.

This setup requires help from several webbers (has no MWD), but traders that for 40% extra EHP (153000 EHP with my skills) and a 500 dps omni passive tank.
Question is if the MWD is worth the 45000EHP difference if you're in a medium large camp gang.
