I've been playing for about 4 weeks now, and I would say that Im doing somewhat decent. But, since this is somewhat of a newbie question, I decided that it would go best here.
So for about a week now I've been mining with my Vexor (4 Mining laser I, 5 Mining Drone I, 4 Cargo expander I). I use what is apparently called the "jetcan method" on the forums, which works really well since the system I use for mining rarely has all the fields occupied.
First off, yes I realize the cargo expanders are not necessary, I just have them so I can fit more in my cargo before I move it to the can if go away from the computer for a min. But, I was wondering, what would be the best (and somewhat cheapest) upgrade I can get to increase the speed at which Im mining? Would it be a new ship, new skills (I've got drone interfacing 4, and mining 3), or new equipment? Since the jetcan method doesnt really have much of a cargo problem, the speed at which Im mining is my biggest drawback.
Also note that Im not exactly that rich, as I tend to spend a good bit of my earnings. Although, that has kept me from dying (or even having my hull damaged) over the past 4 weeks

If you are serious about mining your next step should be a Retriever.
Perhaps you could get 4 Mining Laser II first though. They should add a fair bit to your yield.

you could try: Mining upgrades in place of expanders.
Apart from that, look into Barges.

I would say your main priority would be to get Mining level 4 (to fit T2 mining lasers), and since it's a rank 1 skill it should take less than a day.
Your second priority would be to get mining laser upgrades (the skill), and switch some expanders for them (the module with the same name).
Third, think about getting Astrogeology to at least L3, preferably to L4 (at least eventually).
I hope you also have Drone Interfacing and Mining Drone Operation both to at least L3 too.
Your gallente cruiser skill level should be at least 3, preferably 4 as soon as feasable.
Then, finally you should increase your mining drone skill level to 5 (raise it to L4 some time before) and switch to T2 mining drones.
Of course, you'd probably be better off if you trained for mining barges instead (most of the other skills are still vadid, maybe not in the same order - you'll also need Industry 5).

I personally aimed for this fit on the Retriever:

I now have that and it works VERY well. (so well that you have to stagger the miners otherwise you don't have enough cargo space to fit 2 cycles of ore in your hold) Once you get this, aim for the Hulk.
Note that to be able to fit the scanner on you will need to get Mining Laser Upgrades to at least IV, but if you get a named scanner then that reduces the CPU requirement from 5 to 4, which might mean it will fit at level 3 of that skill.
The funny thing about this sentence is that by the time you've finished reading it, it's too late for you to realise it doesn't say anything. |

When using mining drones make sure you are close to the asteroid to save on drones traveling times.
