Originally by: Kerfira Exploration though, COULD be something to rival L4's for the excitement of discovery alone. However, it is completely killed by the huge imbalance between its rewards and L4's rewards. This is definitely a shame.
I regularly explore in low-sec systems, and I am regularly disappointed. Every once in a while I get something decent, but it is rare. Most of the Radar sites that I find net me, at most, 8 million isk. It used to be more, but since Decryptors are a one-time-investment that never wear out, the prices have been falling like crazy. The data cores are crap, and all those "auxillary parts" and "X cords" that I find are worthless.
I still do Radar sites if I find them - they're there after all, might as well - but I often think to myself, "You know, I really would be better off in high sec, with no pirate issue (at most some loot / salvage guy popping in, but whatever, no biggie), and the certainty that I'm going to get a big payoff with zero risk."
Radar sites are the good things that I find, though. Even a lot of the Magneto sites are very low on the "Neat-o!" factor, and I often find more worthless combat sites (most of them very worthless drone ones) than I care to deal with.
And this is in low-sec systems. I don't have convenient access to null-sec at the moment, but I think it is something I should try to look into so that I can see if it is any better.
Exploration isn't the easiest thing to do in the world. It requires extra skill investments for probing (not a big deal, but it is there), losing a high slot for said probe launcher (unless you have a station with a probe ship handy, but that is rarely the case in my experience), losing a mid-slot for a codebreak or analyzer, dealing with the pirates (A shout-out to my "buddies" in the Dead Pod Society goes here), getting the stuff, then moving it all to a decent market...
The ONLY reason to do exploration is because you are like me and bored to tears with mission running and you are looking for something a little different - which ends up, honestly, just being low-grade mission running with a lot of hassle.
Or maybe I'm just a masochist.
I used to recommend exploration to people who wanted to make money, but I can't do that with a straight face anymore. The obvious way to make cash is what the OP did: Get a Golem with some fancy gear and generate 40-50m isk of income without any risk to yourself.
