I'm a relatively new highsec miner. I just bought my first hulk and I have plenty of ISK to fit it out. I've looked over some of the 0.0 permatank fits but there doesn't seem to be a reason to run that in HS, obviously. I've also seen the high-yield HS fits but they seem very vulnerable to suicide ganking and I want this hulk to make its price back before I lose it.
So---here's the challenge. I've heard intimations of a good high-EHP hulk fit that's resistant to the high alpha-strike of a solo suicide gank BS. Money, let's say, is no object but cheaper is always better. Any ideas?

in all cases nothing beats good intel.
if your located near areas of high pirate activity (even in high sec) the likelihood of being ganked is higher than remote places.

I don't know why you're concerned with a suicide gank on a Hulk to be honest.. in high sec nonetheless... if you fit for tank, you're going to severely affect your mining ability which is going to cost you a ton more in the long run.. I've only heard of macro miners and asshats getting ganked in high sec and they usually deserved it.. I once saw a guy go through 3 or 4 ships before successfully ganking a high sec macro miner Hulk.. I'd fit for either capacity or yield depending on whether you're working with a hauler or solo. In the mids I usually fit a survey scanner, and some basic shield tanking to keep up with rat spawns. But that's just me.. Good luck :)

Assuming you need it to mine too, also thoraxes are very in-vogue right now for suicide ganks, so I'd tank for Antimatter's damage profile: [Hulk, Please Don't Gank Me!] Mining Laser Upgrade II Mining Laser Upgrade II
Kinetic Deflection Amplifier II Heat Dissipation Amplifier II Supplemental Thermal Barrier Emitter F-S9 Regolith Deflection Shield Induction

Vespa EC-600 x5
Have the vespas out, they will agress if someone attacks you and jam one ship (hopefully) so you can warp out. Preferably stay in 0.7 or higher so concord's response time is fast. 3 or more gank-thoroaxes will still get you, (more than likely) a battleship will likely still get you, though maybe not if it's alone; but I mainly hear of cheap cruisers and BCs used, not battleships.
20,146 EHP v. Antimatter M 1547 ore/s Nothing needs to be activated, you can be semi-afk and this will still work. Should still be able to tank highsec spawns indefinitely. A watchful eye on local and a little common sense is worth more than any setup, though.

High sec belt mining is for n00bs in frigates and mining cruisers not t2 mining barges.
So here is what you do. Train up amarr cruiser to 4 and get into an arbitrator. You should already have good drone and fitting skills so all you really need is the hull to make this new and extremely profitable way of mining work in less than a week of training.
These are the steps.
A) Train up for a basic arbitrator:
[Arbitrator, Basic lulz low skill mission] Power Diagnostic System I Power Diagnostic System I Power Diagnostic System I Shield Power Relay I
Large Shield Extender I Large Shield Extender I Invulnerability Field I 10MN Afterburner I
Drone Link Augmentor I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Salvager I
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]
Hammerhead I x5 Hobgoblin I x5
B) Find a system(s) with lots of level 1 and 2 kill agents in or near a good place to sell the refined minerals. Agent quality or specific npc corp is not an issue though if you can find high quality agents next to high mineral buy orders then go for it.
C) Run missions until you get to the ones filled to the brim with juicy ore. There are quite a few missions with great stores of easy to get at ore in them so you won't have to run them for long. Especially as the majority of level 1 and 2 missions are over in just a few minutes using an arbitrator. So even if all you have is a couple of hours to mine you should be doing exactly that after about 15 minutes of mission running. Even less if you score right off the bat.
D) Always refuse blockade and worlds collide.
E) Once the mission is over do not turn it in then go get the hulk and mine away in peace with some nice scenery and a distinct lack of suicidal pod pilots looking for an easy belt hulk kill. Don't worry about the mission bonus reward as its not even worth a couple of cycles a hulks strips.
Bonus) Standing increases with the agents corp mean eventually you will pay no refinery tax and get to keep all the minerals for yourself and can cash in the lp for nice faction items to use or sell.
I should put this in my bio tbh but it probably won't fit.

You probably don't need to worry too much about highsec gankers, tbqh. I've flown my hulk around in 0.5-1.0 space for a while now, and no one has bothered me. Always fit for max hauling capacity.

I have been fiddling with buffer tanks on a Hulk for a while and found basically three levels of buffering options, though you will always have to trade mining efficiency for tank. EHP assumed with all lvl 5 skills, so YMMV. Pick your poison.

The more chance of pricey mods droping out of your space piħata baller hulk the more gankers you'll attract. A good hulk tank can certainly tank a t1 gank battleship, maybe even 2. Can you tank 3? or 4?

Of course if you want to pop a hulk, you can blob until you have enough firepower. None of my fits have modules worth more than 20mil in total, so you won't make ISK out of it. It won't protect you against people dedicated to Hulkkersplosioning but it will save you from any random copycat out there. Also, if there's a choice of Hulks, the untanked ones will be more likely targeted first, simply because it's more fun to pop 3-4 Hulks than just a single buffered one. If anything, you'll have a warning when tears start in local. -------- Ideas for: Mining

This is absolute fail. When they scan this ship they are going to call all their friends and scream "FREE MONEYS! We need a couple more suicide gankers!" However, you might want to consider a few things, first of all; I now have one of those annoying sigs. second; you should probably move on to some more interesting things than reading this sig.

Actually, it'd be more profitable to keep on developing your mission alt. Then instead of refusing Worlds Collide, etc, you can do them while hulk-mining and make extra ISK while you mine.

Well, if you are so worried about your Hulk, maybe just stick to a Covetor. Insurance pays almost for a new one, it can still be tanked good enough, you only need someone to haul for you but that's a preferred modus operandi for mining anyway. Granted, yield won't be on Hulk levels but it's much less risk ISK wise. Here's a fit they will still need a BS or a few BCs to gank:
[Covetor, Highsec] EHP 11214 Micro Auxiliary Power Core I F85 Peripheral Damage System I
Medium Shield Extender II
Strip Miner I Strip Miner I Strip Miner I
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]

Get an alt or mate to shoot you in a rookie ship - concord spaws and gives you protection.
Suicide dessie alt is great for squishing pods (last thing a suicide ganker expects is to be podded ;). If no one's suiciding near you then drop a little bit of ore in a can and use your alt to pop can flippers to add a little loot to your earnings.

This is true. A well skilled mission runner is going to make loads moar isk per hour than a well skilled belt or even mission mining hulk. However not all people want to mission or pvp and just want to play eve to the gentle whoosh of the strips. I know this as I have a friend who has played eve almost as long as me and only has one account with one character flying a max skill hulk, itty V and now an orca on it. All he likes to do in mine. Thats it. Nothing moar. No missions. No pew pew. No industry. No nuthin. Just mining. Believe me I tried. I even bought him some tackling frigates to go on a roam with me and gave him isk to make sure he had a replacement clone and implants but nope no thank you I just want to mine he says. But don't feel bad for him as he seems to enjoy it immensely and still plays regularly as I sometimes scoot an orca alt over to him so he can just sit and mine as we chat and not have to switch out to his own orca. Guess the moral is different strokes for different folks even if it makes no sense to us.

Edited by: LaDy PuRe on 08/07/2009 15:41:10 well. an old pirate corp i was in used to raid highsec in a pack of rifters/ incursus fitted for max gank. used to take around 9 of us. jump in fleet warp to a previously scanned suitably worthwhile hulk sat minding his buisness in a belt. ( we would park a barge next to him for a warp in point fitted with cargo expanders to steal his lootz. i can confirm is really quite easy. not a single hulk survived. ever. regardless of what they fitted. if we had one lined up who appeared to have a decent tank fitted we just took in more frigates..... you can not prevent this happening. a few shield extenders of the like will help you possibly survive a lone cruiser or double cruiser attack. but if someone wants to kill you.they will. as someone above said. fitting expensive mods to increase your tank simply makes you MORE of a target.
control q at the first smell of aggression. seems to work these days
