So what's everybody's opinion on tanking.. what makes a better tank, a shield tank or a armor tank? Almost every pvp video I see they're armor tanks. Just wondering because I really want to start pvping but I dont want to fly the wrong ships. Which are the most popular shield and armor tanks?

Edited by: Intigo on 04/07/2009 11:33:53 Depends on the ship. There are good kinds of both active and passive shield and armor tanks and anyone who tells you otherwise is a complete moron.
Edit: In terms of popularity...
Shield-wise for BCs:
Drake (yes, for PvP)
Armor for BCs:
Eh - Hurricane / Harbinger? But the Hurricane can also be shieldtanked if need be.
All are great ships and there is nothing wrong with shield tanking. The only issue is that Remote Rep fleets are usually done armor as it's simply easier to get a decent RR BS fleet together with armor tanks (a ton of Torp Ravens with Remote Shield Transfers would be awesome, not used nearly enough unfortunately - would be fun to create like 6-7 alts with farmer names and surprise people when they engage you thinking you're cruise farmer ravens). ___________________

Armor tanks are definately best for RR BS gangs, simply because they use in 99% of the cases remote armor reppers. Besides that they both have their usefull cases. The good news, the main tank type used these days is buffer tank. You can train for a good t2 shield buffer tank in 1(-2) weeks absolute max. (t2 large extenders, t2 invuln fields, general shield HP skill). Armor buffer tanks takes bit more time due to need for t2 EANMs, and its compensation skills, but it also isnt that much time.

it doesn't really matter ...
shield tanking and having much damage mods is easier (a raven for instance ). Amor tanking and having tackeling gear / mwd / sensorboosters / eccm is easier. _______________ Please resize your signature to the maximum allowed of 400 x 120 pixels with a maximum file size of 24000 bytes. Zymurgist |

Armor tanks have the benefit of leaving midslots for a cap booster and tackle gear, although usually sacrificing low-slots for tank that could be used for damage mods.
Shield tank ships (most of them), if they don't have to fit tackle, they can have the nastiest tank around while still dealing massive amounts of damage.
This makes them excellent fleet ships, provided someone else is keeping the target tackled. So it depends on what you want to do and with who you're gonna do it to find out what type of tank works best for you.
As for the most popular, the Drake is a (somewhat underestimated) Battlecruiser that can dish out very good damage while still having a strong tank and tackle gear. For T2 there are various T2 Minmatar ships that can put up a decent shield tank, T2 Amarr ships have the best armor tanks.
Aside from that, a Dominix, Raven, Typhoon, Abaddon and the Harbinger, Hurricane, Brutix will all provide good stats for you to play with.

it just seems like once a ship gets thru a raven or drakes shield, they go down instantly after that. while the armor tanks just activate armor repair and cap boost all the way. would a shield booster and cap booster work, or would it be a waste?

If the Hurricane can shield tank if need be, so can the Harbinger.

the question was what is the best tank, shield or armor, answer is shield without a doubt are the best tanks, there is no way to match a active shield tank with an active armor tank when it comes to raw tank. Doesnt make it the obvious choise though since a 50k armor buffer is better against multiple ships were it takes them a while to get through it, then a 10k buffer that tanks 1k dps wich multiple ships break very fast.

Armor buffer is generally the norm, yes. Due in part to the ability to still fit tackling/propulsion/eccm/etc... without sacrificing tank, and the RR gang factor comes into play as well. Some people do, however, fit shield buffer on their blasterboats (i.e.Brutix) and go full Yoink fits. ~ The man who smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on. |

I generally think of reps as being a flat damage reduction, since that's what they are if you're repping while being shot at.
Which leads to a very simple method for me of determining which is 'better' - a big buffer that takes full damage or a smaller buffer with however much damage reduction.
To be honest, on most ships without a rep bonus a pure buffer is better. Even on ships with a rep bonus a lot of times I opt for a buffer anyway and fill my lows with damage mods (like my Brutix) since buffer tanks take fewer slots and you don't have to tank any damage if they're dead.
I do run an active tank on my Myrm but only because it tanks like a beast if you set it up right - mine tanks 858 DPS, at least until the reppers explode - and there's damage mods for drones so there's really nothing else to stick in the lows anyway
