In some of your forum posts on the IGS, and I'm sure during your normal RP activities as well, you guys use words like "haan", "guri" and "jaijii". Whilst I'm pretty sure these words have pretty much the same role as "san" or "sama" in the Japanese language on some levels, I'm curious what each of them means more specifically.
So, can anyone enlighten me a bit on this concept please?

Edited by: Stitcher on 08/07/2009 08:07:41 The reference list I use is kept here. I don;t know if there's a more comprehensive one.
"-haan" is roughly the equivalent of the japanese "-san", though I think it's use is more formal than the Japanese one. Literally, it means "citizen" and is used for anybody who is loyal to the State.
"-guri" literally means "naughty person" and is reserved for outlaws, criminals, pirates and suchlike.
"Jaijii" translates to "foreigner" and is reserved both for citizens of other nations, but also Caldari who have aligned themselves primarily with the interests and philosophy of another nation.
There's also "hnolku" meaning "traitor", "Jaaalan" meaning "dissident", "Kirjuun" meaning "comrade" or "fellow employee", and "Suuolo" meaning "friend".
There seems to be some disagreement as to whether the honorific used is perspective-based or not, which would cause "haan" to mean "citizen of my faction" rather than "citizen of the state". Seeing as there aren't many non-Caldari who use the lingo IC, it rarely pops up. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

Couple more words in here and since it's a wiki it can probably be updated by anyone.

Edited by: Raem Civrie on 08/07/2009 11:58:08 This is where parts of it started. Herko Khergaans was the most active in spreading the gospel to start with. But before that people had been using pseudo-Japanese.
And yes, it's a mesh of Finnish and Japanese. The idea is that Napanii is a "dead" language, much like Latin. In EVE the four languages get translated automatically when people of different ethnicities speak, but Napanii doesn't as it is, well, dead. What remains are expressions, legal terms and so on, that "carry over" in translations.
The Caldari state has been experiencing a resurgence of patriotism in recent years, which fits with the idea of the deliberate resurrection of a language that predates Gallentean influence.
Edit: I realize I'm quoting and referencing myself and that it makes me a terrible person. I'll have to live with it. ---
