Indiana Jones hated snakes. CCP hates bugs. What happens when you get CCP Gangleri and CCP GingerDude together? They tackle a nasty little cloaking and client lock up bug. You can read all about it in CCP Gangleri's newest dev blog.

I really really really hoped this was going to be about fixing the scan probing bugs.
When it wasn't, I was brewed up a pot of righteous indignation. But I've worked in QA and found this such an interesting read that that pot seems to have gone lukewarm in the interim, so:
nice dev blog. . . . . . but what about scan probes?

Really cool of CCP to give us a little insight into the bug squashing process. Now if only I could have made this post without having to log into the forums 16 times before I could make a post stick... lol.

Great write up. Thanks for the info. As a developer myself, I'm always interested in the details of stuff like this...
One comment though. In my short time playing this game, there have been several deployments for new stuff immediately followed by deployments for bug fixes. As a developer (one who works on an app with ~750,000 LOC), I know it's impossible to find everything. However, it seems that often with a bit more testing on the test server, such as load testing, some of these issues could be avoided. Maybe you can create little tournaments help test in a more realistic environment. This could be taken as far as you want... Perhaps give 100 people ships, tell them to meet in the middle, and it's last man/woman standing. I would love to participate in something like that.

Hmmm...most annoying bug ever. They seem to generally involve cloaking.
There was the one longtime ago where if someone STARTED locking you, it would finish locking you even if you cloaked. That was pretty annoying. The worst part was when some dev went on record saying that it was intentional, when he basically misunderstood the complaint. PHEW. What a mess that was.
Then there was the more recent one where you couldn't cloak for 2-3 seconds after de-cloaking from a jump. That was pretty bad too. ----------------------------------------------------

Nice post. It's a good reminder that there are things going on behind the scenes, even if we get frustrated thinking there isn't because we can't see them.

Quote: It didn't impact gameplay much and was really tricky to fix, so it got marked as low-priority and left to accumulate dust for years.
Why fix such insignificant bug instead of fixing stuff like ships not docking when told to, ships appearing multiple times on overview, appearing on overview when they aren't even there or showing red when it's not a wartarget/flagged to you (that one might be fixed now, not 100% sure), scan probe screen broken, and several other small annoying bugs.
Anyways, nice blog and I hope you guys go fix all the other bugs you got crawling in your systems
Edit: Fix forums too plz

Quote: De-cloaking player A meant that his ship should be added to the simulation of all other clients within range, but this piece of code would ignore ships in the intermediary state and not add them to other players simulation at this time.
Aha! That explains that invisible ship bug many of us saw. Someone reported it could be reproduced by a recon uncloaking mid-warp.

The reason I still play this game is just this, the occational transparency. Besides, the DevBlog is generally a good read.

As someone with experience with bugs in a monolithic codebase I would like to say how impressed I am with the timeline on the fix. It really does show a) how hard you guys work to resolve major issues and b) how fixing a really minor bug can break things much, much worse. What it doesn't yet show is c) how fixing fossilised bugs can often open-up new feature possibilities - especially now that someone has that part of the code fresh in their mind.
Nice blog :)

So you can fix bugs in a timely manner.
Now go fix the other 9999 out of the 10000 you have :p.
Seriously, showing you can do it and hiding the fail dosn't impress as well as you think.
